Intro
Welcome to the Complete Guide [Mechanics, Endings, Walkthrough] by SockMonkey!

I picked up this game in the October 2022 Steam Fright Fest Sale and quite enjoyed it!
So I decided to write up a proper full guide for anyone else who got the game and may need a bit of help with it. For the most part, this game should be something you can beat on your own with minimum guidance, but there are one or two sections that might be a bit confusing. Hopefully that is where this guide will lend some help!
Game Mechanics
The game has very simplistic controls.

On PC, using a keyboard;
  • WASD for movement
  • Spacebar to interact

I have also played using a Nintendo Switch Pro controller using the DS4Windows program[docs.ds4windows.app] which let me connect my controller and interpreted the controller input.

On PC, using a controller;
  • Left joystick for movement
  • B to interact (Nintendo) / A to interact (Xbox) / X to interact (Playstation)
Endings
Without revealing too much, this section lets you view details on the endings such as how many exist.

Number of Endings:
Midnight Subway has a total of 3 endings.

List of Available Endings:
Note for the unspoiled: The number of items listed here isn't equal to the number of endings.
List of the possible endings:
- The Bad Ending
- The Good Ending
- The Midnight Ending (aka The Best Ending)
Three Total

Endings Overview:
Details are broken up to help avoid spoiling more than you might want to see.
The information is sorted sequentially, and it might be best to view this contents of this section after playing through the game once to get your first ending.

1. On your first playthrough of Midnight Subway, you will always get the Bad ending.

2. On subsequent playthroughs, the game will skip sections of the game where you've completed all of the puzzles for a particular ghost. Instead it will bring you to only the sections of the game that you have not yet "completed".

3. If you complete all of the puzzles, you will have a chance at either The Good Ending or The Midnight Ending.
  • The Good Ending will occur if you beat the game during normal day hours.
  • The Midnight Ending will occur if you beat the game after midnight.

4. If you got the Good Ending, you can still experience The Midnight Ending. If you wait until Midnight to start the game (or change the clock on your PC), you'll be able to play through The Midnight Ending.

5. For the Midnight Ending, the game will resume from the start but you'll notice things have changed. To complete The Midnight Ending... you need to find hidden skulls within the levels. They're fairly easy to find, but if you need help see Ghost 9 in Puzzle & Secret Walkthroughs section."

This section will give you an overview of each ghost's section.
It will also include spoilers on what you need to do to complete the puzzles or secrets located in that section.

The Introduction
The game starts off with an introduction.
This character will always die playing through the introduction.

Ghost 1
Fishing Ghost
The fishing ghost has some basic puzzles that require you to interact with some items that allow you to place and remove buttons.

Completion:
At the very start of the game, before you pass through the Station Fare Gates you will notice a tackle box on the ground. Walk over to it and pick it up with the A button. Later, towards the end of the Fishing Ghost's section, you will see them sitting on a platform above the ground. If you kept a button with you from the previous room (removed from the door after opening the door), you can use the lift to get up to the ghost and give them the tackle box.

Ghost 2
Teddy Bear Ghost
The Teddy Bear Ghost will drop their teddy bear and there will be chase sequences where you'll need to be able to push buttons and pull some chains to run away.

Completion:
You will not be able to complete the Teddy Bear Ghost section on your first playthrough.
In order to beat this section, you will need to complete Ghost 5's puzzle. Once you have completed Ghost 5's puzzle, on your next playthrough...
You'll have the Letter Item that you can give to the Teddy Bear Ghost at the very end of the section.

Ghost 3
Computer Ghost
Using the buttons below the screen, you can alter the symbols to explore different areas.
Tip: If you have an issue passing certain "beams", stick to the left or right so you can better gauge your position.

Completion:
You will need to enter the blue solar system symbol as all three symbols and submit the Input. In that level you will be able to find a CD. Once you have collected the CD, you can proceed through the section until you get to the end.
At the end, when the ghost is floating next to a monitor and keyboard, you want to interact with the right side CD slot in order to insert the CD that you found. Proceed through and you'll complete the section.

Ghost 4
Painting Ghost
Navigate some simple puzzles to move through the levels.

Completion:
For each level in this section, you will need to collect a paint bucket that corresponds to that levels color scheme.
Note: You must gather all paint buckets in a single play through of the level as they will not carry over. (Thanks to Dnny99 for this tip)
- Red: Once you are almost at the end, a set of arrows will appear that control the orientation of the room behind you. You can spin the room around and go get the red paint bucket.
- Orange: Look closely at the tiles and you'll notice that the ones that are safe to stand on have a 3D design to them instead of the flat design of the unsafe spaces. You can use that to follow the safe path to pick up the orange paint bucket on your way through the level.
- Yellow: The yellow paint bucket is along one of the winding narrow paths.
- Green: Pick all of the flowers and the green paint bucket will appear.
- Blue: The blue paint bucket is on the ground in the room. You can spam interact until you find it as you walk forward.
- Indigo: You will need to navigate the room full of invisible people in order to select the paintings in the color order of the rainbow. Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet. Make sure you do not use the interact button anywhere except at the correct paintings in sequence or else the puzzle will reset and you'll need to start back at the red painting.
- Violet: You will find the paint bucket on the ground as you walk through the level.
Once you have each paint bucket, you will be able to interact with the canvas at the end to complete the level.
Spoiler for a later puzzle: Make sure to grab the flowers out of the trash can. You'll need them for Ghost 6.

Ghost 5
Gaming Ghost
You'll navigate a first person video game to collect gems!

Completion:
You will not be able to complete the Gaming Ghost section on your first playthrough.
While playing the first person video game, you will need to collect gems. There will be a total of 8 to find and towards the end, there will be TWO 8 gem doors that can be opened. The one off the main path contains a letter item that is needed for the Teddy Bear Ghost on your next playthrough. Once you've completed the Teddy Bear Ghost... You will have the Teddy Bear item that you can give to the Gaming Ghost which will complete the section

Ghost 6
Theater Ghost
Watch a performance.

Completion:
If you managed to pick up the bouquet of flowers from the trash can in Ghost 4's section, your character will automatically throw them to the Theater Ghost at the end of the section completing it.

Ghost 7
Garden Ghost
Explore rooms.

Completion:
Pet the dog at the start of the level and every time you finish exploring a room.

Ghost 8
Intro Character Ghost
Completion:
There isn't anything specific that needs to be done here to beat this section.

Ghost 9
⚠️ This relates to The Midnight Ending

Skull Mask Ghost
Completion:
Find all the hidden skulls in each of the sections.
  • The Fishing Ghost - interact with the TV after taking the lift up
  • The Teddy Bear Ghost - Interact with the teddy bear repeatedly
  • The Computer Ghost - Set all Inputs to be the skull icon
  • The Painting Ghost - Pick up the white paint can and then in the following room interact with the canvas
  • The Gaming Ghost - Sit on the couch, follow the path in the game, and a skull figure will jumpscare you
  • The Theater Ghost - Take a seat in the theater
  • The Garden Ghost - Simply walk through the level
  • The Intro Character Ghost - Simply walk through the level
  • The Skull Mask Ghost - Simply proceed through the level

Could be worth mentioning that the paint buckets do not carry over for a new playthrough meaning you have to get them all on the same run. Since some items carried over I assumed the paint buckets would too so I didnt bother getting the ones I had already gotten. But since they dont I had to do an extra lap to redo the painter.
