Basic survival guide for new players : what you should buy first, and later.
By Azzak
Heroes & Generals is a pretty hard game for new players. This guide will tell you how to become something else than a basic grunt getting butchered at every battle, and this without losing time and money.

It focus on how to spend your hard-earned money, what mistakes you should not do, how works characters management, and what would be your long-term goals.

Introduction

Welcome to Heroes & Generals !

Due to the relatively high cost of the items you might wonder : what should I buy first ?
Fear not ! I will present the weapons and equipment you need ASAP in order to be able to deal with most of the threats in the game.

Note that the game is unbalanced by nature : battles are fought by the assault teams (AT) present at the concerned territory. Sometimes you have a basic infantry with infantry battle. Sometimes there are also tanks and planes involved ... and sometimes one side has all types of vehicles available and the other has none ! Yes, you might fight battles where the enemy has Pershing/Tigers and you only have foot soldiers. However you will only be involved in those unbalanced battles from level 3. Before you reach this point you'll fight battles with pre-determined assault teams in order to learn how to play. Still, getting to level 3 is fast and you need to prepare yourself as fast as possible.

Since you're a beginner you only have a rifleman, and you won't do much against better equipped enemies. The handgrenades you begin with do nothing against tanks, and neither does your rifle. Against infantry, in a close quarter engagement your rifle is inferior to submachine guns and machine guns. In long-range engagement you stand more of a chance but you might still struggle against bolt-action rifles. It's still possible to deal with infantry in all combat situations of course, the advantage of the starting rifle is its versatility.

So what should you buy first ? I'll start right away in the first section.

[Updated for build T]

Short summary of the guide & anti-tank weaponry
What you will find in this guide :

I. What you need to buy first, and explanations about character management
II. Builds you need in the medium/long run
III. FAQ and other tips
IV. Classes and Item Costs

For those who are impatient you will find below a summary of the first part. It is highly advised to read the whole guide in order to get the full gameplay explanations.

There are a lot of tanks in the game. You need anti-tank equipment to deal with them as soon as possible. Or you'll cry. A lot.

Previously the best anti-tank weapon was the bazooka/panzershreck. Unfortunately with the more recent builds prices for rockets have grown out of control, and thus they are NOT a good anti-tank weapon for beginners anymore. That'll eat too much credits.
So you're left with sub-par anti-tank weapons, but eh you'll still need them in order to survive.

1- The easiest and fastest way - Panzerfauts

Everyone can have panzerfausts. They're either located in crates around spawn points, or they can be carried by vehicles.

To unlock them you simply need to get a soldier rank 2. Then buy a jeep/kubel. Click on it, then "upgrade vehicle". On the upgrades tab, click on "+". Add "Anti-tank supply crate". And tada ! When you'll spawn your jeep you'll have a nice crate with panzerfausts. Pick them up while disembarked.

(Click on the image to zoom)

How to use : it's only one use, aim with right click. When you have the tank in sight, press space. it'll adjust the range automatically (it has quite a close range, so try to flank tanks). Then fire. Go back to your jeep and pick another faust (it takes some time to be able to pick it up again). You'll usually need 2-3 shots to destroy a tank.
Yes, it's very hard, try to flank the tank, park your jeep somewhere hidden, and be stealthy.

2- For the brave or the madmen : AT Mines !

After destroying a few tanks with fausts you'll earn the ribbon "Tank Destruction 1". You'll be able to buy these lovely things. Remember that there are Anti-tank and anti-infantry mines ! I'm speaking about the AT mines here.
How to use : Don't drop them everywhere ! Allied vehicles can explode on your mines. Instead spot an enemy tank, and get very close to it (so close that you can touch it with your own hands !). Drop a mine. Then step back and shoot the mine. It'll oneshot the tank. Remember to not get caught in the explosion or you'll die because of your own mine. Happens quite a lot even to the best.
So yes, easier said than done ! Try to do this with a jeep, quickly doing it without being spotted.
Alternatively, if you are sure an enemy tank will go this way (like bridges or narrow roads/streets) and no allied tanks will go this way, then please put mines there !

Fausts & mines are enough most of the time, the rest is either too costly or takes too long to unlock. Get an SMG for example, you have enough anti(tank weaponry to survive.
I still list the rest here so you can know everything about tank hunting !

3- For the nearly as brave and the nearly as mad as mine rushers: Anti-tank grenades !"

This requires the ribbon "Tank Destruction 6", which might takes a while to get. But when you'll be there, you have access to these little toys. As a personal taste I prefer using mines, since if you are close enough to use grenades, you're close enough to use mines ! And mines are cheaper.
How to use : Germans : you have to get into contact with the tank, attach them to the tank and run. Good luck. US and Soviets : Throw them at the tanks. I believe. I have never used US or russian AT grenades but I guess they work in a similar way !

4- For the richest : Bazookas/Panzershreks

It's not expensive to buy the weapon itself, but extremely costly to resplenish rockets. It's the most efficient AT weapon, but you sell one part of your body every time you use a rocket. So be careful and make them count !
To unlock them you need the ribbon "Explosives 1", which requires you to kill some people with basic grenades.
Then you need to save around 35K to buy the AT weapon.
How to use : as with the faust, aim and press space to adjust the range. Then fire. It has a much longer effective range than the faust and you can carry multiple rockets. Rearm at supply crates carried by vehicles or at spawn points.

Important : Don't switch your character to any other class, you need one anti-armor infantry before having another class. Patience is rewarded with lots of kills later.

After you've set up this anti-armor soldier with either one of this setup, you're good to go with additional characters and loadouts detailed in second section.

Steps summary

- Get to rank 2
- Buy jeep
- Buy modification for jeep : anti-tank equipment. (Press space while aiming with the panzerfausts at a tank to adjust range)
- If you like to rush tanks in a very foolish way, get AT mines. They're great. Or AT grenades. Devs want to nerf the AT mines so be prepared to get nades out just in case !
- Save credits, rise in ranks, get comfortable with the game and have a lot of credits to spare (more than you need, so having all your characters with tiers 2 modded weapons already).
- Get explosives ribbon 1 (you'll likely have it already unlocked if you killed some people with nades).
- Buy the Bazooka/Panzershrek. Be careful they cost A LOT. A LOT A LOT. If you use it you'll lose money. Don't use it all the time, use it only in war battes when it's important to win (or against medium/heavy tanks, as those are really expensive for the generals who buy them).
- Enjoy.

I. How to survive hell : what you need to buy first
A. Omg, tanks.

You'll soon notice that the game is swarming with light tanks. Encountering medium tanks is also not uncommon.
You'll also soon notice you're going to get butchered by them. You'll start jumping on tanks turrets while they annihilate your team, hoping for some miracle, but it's obviously not an efficient tactic.

So what should be your first buy ? Anti-armor equipement. Yes, if you can't deal with tanks you are going to have a bad time. I can't stress it enough : BUY ANTI-ARMOR GEAR.

B. But I want to be a paratrooper/recon/tank crew/pilot....characters management and classes explained

Yes I know, you don't want to carry a bazooka/panzershreck on your back. You want to drive a mighty tank, or jump behind the enemy lines as a true band of brothers hero. But don't worry ! You can be all of them !

Let me explain : you can create new infantry characters using this button :

You can switch to any of your character in game using the arrows in the left/down box of the screen (click to have the image bigger) :

Of course you can't switch to a paratrooper if there is no paratrooper division on the battlefield. Same goes for tanks etc. . But since there are always infantry on the field you'll be able to switch to any kind of infantry characters you have. At every battle. You can't change quickly the weapons of your soldier in game*, so you need characters with different loadouts to face every situation.

Example : so let's say you have a paratrooper, one infantry with a sniper rifle, and one infantry with a bazooka.
You play with your paratrooper, and suddently -oh god there are tanks ! Well you simply switch to your bazooka-man and nuke them. Then there are no more tanks, but the battlefield has moved to an open area - switch to your sniper-armed infantryman. That's easy !

Here are the three rules for efficient characters management :

1- You want to ALWAYS have at least one infantry character. You need one to play with your friends, and to gain money. If you only have a tank crew, your tank is in need of repair and you don't have the money to pay for it you're screwed. Besides, an infantry is always useful on the battlefield. So remember : when you hit rank 3 don't switch to a tank driver ! Keep your infantry ! Or buy a new one.

2- You want to ALWAYS have one infantry with anti-armor equipment. Because you're ultimately going to encounter tanks, and sometimes you won't have tanks on your side to protect you. Anti-armor equipment could be just a vehicle with faust crates, or better : use mines, anti-tank grenades or even bazooka if you have the money for it.

3- You want to have a specific loadout for each of your character. Each character has its proper equipment and can not equip a weapon bought for another character. It's a total waste of money to have two weapons for the same guy.
C. Alright, but I only have a rifleman remember ? So what should I do first ?

You need an early anti-armor : when you unlock the jeep vehicle at rank 2, purchase it and modifiy it with the "anti-armor box". Don't forget to equip it before closing the window. Also, clock on the ammunition counter "100", check "automatic repair" so you don't have the surprise in game that whoops, you have run out of crates !
That's it, your first anti-armor equipement ! If there are tanks, get to your vehicle. Behind you'll find panzerfausts, and they're really useful to destroy tanks at short range.

Aim the sides or the back of the tanks ! You can press space to automatically set the range. Don't forget its range is very limited so get close to the tank before firing ! It's also a one-use weapon, so you need to get back to your jeep to get new ones. One tactic is to drive your jeep close to where the enemy tanks are without being spotted. Fire the fausts on their backs, get back to your jeep to resupply and let the tank eat it again !
Of course you need to be in a motorized infantry division in order to have jeeps.
Final note : there are sometimes panzerfausts in crates in some spawn points.

So that's it ! You can deal with tanks, the major threat in the game ! One good thing about it is that every infantryman can have fausts as long as they can deploy jeeps with anti-armor crates.

D. But now I'm stuck with an infantry, but I want to be tank crew/recon/paratrooper etc

No problem ! Since you can switch classes in game you just need to recruit another infantry. One of these 2 will be your "main" soldier, the other one will be your "anti-armor soldier".
Your anti-armor soldier will level his "Anti-Tank" ribbon, and you'll gain access to more anti-tank weaponry.

More AT weaponry includes [already written in the summary if you have read it] :

- Anti-tank mines.

They are unlocked very early with "Anti-tank" ribbon 1, so you just need to destroy a few tanks to unlock them. They're also quite cheap. They take a bit of inventory space, so feel free to use the "hoarder" perk to have more ammo.

To use them you need to rush toward a tank until you are close to it. And by close, I mean that you literraly need to be able to touch the tank. Drop a mine at its tracks or behind it. Then run backward a bit, and shoot the mine with your rifle ! It'll explode, destroying the tank in the process (and you as well if you were too close !).

it's best to use a jeep so you can flank a tank, and while it does not seen you either go stealthy mode or rush the tank with the jeep, disembark, and place the mine as fast as possible.
You might get killed in the process, but oh the joy of having destroyed a tank !

- Anti-tank grenades.

More expensive than mines, they are also unlocked much later with the "Anti-Tank ribbon 6". Use them in the same way as mines, but [Germans] you just need to attach them to tanks (spam click click click). Then giggle and run when the deed is done, the tank will explode in a moment. [US or russians] Throw them at the enemy !

- Bazookas !

It's the perfect AT weapon. Problem : it cost a loooooot. Not the weapon itself but the rockets it uses ! You need to buy rockets, and they're damn expensive.
The weapon is unlocked quite soon though, with the ribbon "Explosives 1". Just kill a few people with grenades and you'll unlock it.
Use it in the same way than the faust : aim, press space to adjust range, fire. You might equip your jeep with "Ammunition crate" so you can rearm rockets easily. It has a much longer range than faust. Usually 2-3 rockets are enough to destroy tanks.

Just keep in mind recon/paratrooper do not have access to jeeps, thus panzerfausts. They also have much less inventory space, so no mines/bazookas for them !So don't forget to keep one soldier as an infantry ! Paratroopers do have other anti-tank grenades, but you need some time to unlock them so you better keep an infantry until that time.

Second section review the different loadouts you might need to have after you have set up your anti-armor (panzerfaust/mines) infantry guy.

II. Builds and characters you need
II. Builds and characters you need

Those are likely the loadouts (= characters) you'll end up after playing a while.

A. Anti-Armor infantry

The first build you need to setup as described in the previous section. Either it's your first infantry or your second one.

As explained before it can come up with a lot of variations. Either it's just a guy with a jeep full of fausts, either a rich bourgeois with his bazooka or a kamikaze with mines. Mines/Panzershreck/Bazooka weights a lot so you won't be able to bring anything else than another weapon. You'll run out of rockets a lot, so keep your vehicle with ammunition box near you. An alternative is to get the Hoarder perk, which brings you one additional ammo clip for your rifle. That way you can also equip 2 rocket slots while not feeling naked ! Wonderful !

With a ranged AT weapon, aim for the back or the sides of the enemy tank. It'll usually explode in two shots. Don't be too far away especially if you aim at the front, or your rocket will bounce off the armor.
Oh and be careful, rockets cost a lot of silver ! Don't shoot too much, and don't miss. Every rocket counts.

Class : Infantry

Equipement :
- Bazooka/Panzershreck/Mine/AT grenades/Just a jeep with fausts
- Semi-automatic rifle/Bolt action rifle/SMG (no zooka)

Perks :
- Hoarder
- Iron Fist (tank damage)

Pros :
- You need it to destroy the hordes of tanks present in the game ! Your teammates will praise you, and you'll become the hero of your nation !
- You can still play as a regular infantryman.
- In close combat you can oneshot people with your ranged AT weapon if aimed correctly.

Cons :
- No anti-infantry equipment such as grenades or mines.
- Limited ammunition.

B. Close quarter engagements and assauts

When you're at one meter from the enemy, a rifle is clumsy. Get that SMG and have them eat bullets !

Along with some grenades you'll be able to attack or defend locations better than with a rifle.
As an additional bonus, you might want to use this guy as a paratrooper or a tank crew later on since they can use SMGs ! Pick the grenadier perk to further boost your annoying capabilities to wreck havoc. Anti-tank grenades are also very efficient against tanks since you're likely to get close ! Throw two of them at the back/sides of a tank and run "giggling as a little girl" ! Perfect in urban combats.
Mod your smg to have more rate of fire. You don't need to hold down sight. And aim for the head if possible, thanks to your high rate of fire you'll down them easily !

There is an alternative strategy that can be used with 2 tank crews players. You can spawn in allied tanks as a tank crew, so use it as a spawn point. Place the vehicle near the enemy position, and disembark. With you smg you'll be able to deal with the threats, even though you can't bring grenades. If you die, just respawn at the tank. Keep one player in the tank to protect the area.

Classes :
- Infantry
- Paratroopers
- Tank crew

Equipment :
- Smg
- Grenades

Perks :
- Heavy
- Grenadier
- Fast-Reload
- Hoarder (less ammo to take, more equipment to bring)
- Pointer Quick-Fire

Pros :
- Cheap (~12k for the first smg)
- Equipable by a lot of classes
- Can still kill people at medium range with headshots if you're lucky.
Cons :
- Don't use it at long range, you'll waste bullets.
- For some reasons, more heavy than a rifle.
- Low damage overall, aiming for the head is usually necessary when it's not very short range engagement.
- Be prepared to have a limited lifespan during assaults.

C. Medium/Long-range engagement

Yes, we all have this predator feeling inside us. Time to grab a rifle and kill. This setup is basically the basic infantry with the potential to specialize further in long range combat later on.

We have some choices of weapons here : the semi-automatic rifle of the beginning is not the best but also has versatility, so you might want to stick with it. If you want a more specific long-range weapon grab the bolt-action rifle but then don't rush in close combat or you'll have a hard time. Prevent enemy movement to the capture points !
Infantry can buy scoped rifles at ribbon level 12. Only Recons can mod it to oneshot though.
Maxing damage on all the rifles you have is the rule.

Classes :
- Infantry
- Recon

Equipment :

- Semi-auto rifle or bolt-action rifle or scoped bolt-action rifle.
- Rest is up to you.

Perks :

- Ghillie, Camouflaged...
- Heavy (more HP is always nice)

Pros :
- Versatile if you stay with the semi-auto rifle.
- You're less likely to die if you stay at range.
- You have a great view : please spot the enemy, especially tanks and other vehicles ! It helps to get them down before they wipe half of the team.

Cons :
- You are weak in close combat, especially against Smgs and Mgs.
- You're at a disadvantage against tanks, since you're too far away from them to get panzerfausts or AT grenades.
- You need to aim properly.

D. Machine gunner

Machinegunners are used to gun down a lot of incoming ennemies at medium range and provide support fire. You can also rush to assault with them if you're cautious, you need to aim to be able to fire well. You can also go prone and shoot distant targets, you'll still hit. Remember to shoot in bursts.
With some practice you'll enjoy a lot being a machinegunner. Put yourself in a good spot. Gun. move. Etc... perfect in defense, good in offense as well. It's quite long to unlock mgs, and especially the second one.

Class : Infantry
Equipment : Machinegun
Perks :
- Heavy
- Tight Grip
- Ghillie ?

Pros :
- Versatility. Can rush or pick targets at distance.
- Deadly. Shoot fast and damage strong.
- Very good to defend points and camp positions.

Cons :
- Extremely heavy, you can't bring much additional gear.
- Everyone will pick your weapon when you'll be dead. Sometimes you'll regret giving to an enemy a MG42 to defend its newly acquired building.

E. Tank support

Of course when tanks are available it is wise to get one.
The first light tanks of both nations are only tankettes. They don't have guns and are terrible at destroying other tanks. Switching to a more powerful model is advised. The panzer 2 tank is godly with 2 APCR and in some cases is better than the 38t. The chaffee is better than the stuart, but much more expensive. For russian tanks, get the last one asap. The others tend to suck.

Note that you can zoom/dezoom with your mouse wheel. It's also with this button you take a look outside the tank, or get back into. Useful tip : don't show yourself unless you need to, you never know if enemy riflemen are looking at you...

Class : Tank crew

Equipement :
- Smg
- ///Pistol if you want to be classy.

Perks :
- Gunner seems the must have.

F. Air support

So you want to be a knight of the sky ? I am not a pilot myself so I can't advise you here. However from what I know so far :
- It's hard to spot enemies. So tell your infantry below to spot those nasty tanks for you.
- Don't bomb points if they are being captured by your team. Usually you'll just kill the friendlies trying to capture it !
- The safest bet is to bomb enemy spawn points : when you see a lot of people running to a vehicle you're likely to score some points !
-I don't think equipment is that much important for pilots.

II. Builds part 2, evolution path
In this section we'll discuss step by step what would be the equipment you need to buy depending of your long-term choices.

A- I want to be a recon/long range rifleman !

1- Buy jeep with anti-armor upgrade once rank 2
If you want to stay with a semi-auto (SA) rifle then you're done, modify mods. Ammo is too expensive don't do it. Buy additional equipement and more vehicles.
But I believe you want a bolt-action rifles so :

2- Save money until you can buy a bolt-action (BA) rifle. You need to level up your Semi-automatic ribbon first to a good level, it'll take a while. Do not spend anything on modifications or special ammunition for the SA rifle.

3- Buy BA rifle. Now you need to decide if you want to buy a scoped BA rifle or not. Practice a little to feel if you like the weapon or not. If you just want a BA rifle, you can modify it already and stay as infantry. if you want to be a recon with a scoped BA rifle, see the next steps !

a- Scoped - Needs recon class
4- Recons lose the ability to drive a jeep. Buy a motorbike as infantry when you'll have the opportunity. Not only you won't be on foot as a recon but you'll be able to deploy vehicles while in a motorized guard assault team as infantry, so you won't have to walk all the time.
5- Level up your bolt action rifle without buying anything to modify it. Once you have enough rank, switch your character to recon class. I
6- I advise you to recruit another infantry and get him a jeep with anti-armor crate even if you want to play as a recon. It's always useful to have an infantry. Recon manpower goes out quickly, you need another class to play when that happens.
7- Level up your BA. Save money until you can buy the scoped rifle.
8- Once you'll have the scoped BA rifle, then level it up and buy modifications for it (damage especially).
9- As a recon you lose access to jeeps but you gain motorbikes and an armoured car. Buy it !

That's it, you have the basic equipment for sniping !

B- I want to be a close-quarter soldier ! (SMG infantry, paratrooper)
1- Buy jeep with anti-armor upgrade once rank 2
2- Buy the first SMG. It's cheap, and should be done quickly.
3- Do not modify the first SMG or purchase special ammo
(3b - If you want to be a paratrooper, switch now as soon as possible. I believe you can do it before buying the second SMG.)
4- Level up and save money until you can buy the second and much better SMG.
5- Buy it. Level it up and modify it with increased rate of fire as soon as you can.
6- Buy additional equipement : grenades, mines, shovels (no don't they are broken don't do it :p)... whatever pleases you. Keep in mind paratroopers have limited space, thus can not carry much.
7- If you're an infantry buy the motorbike and the Amoured personal carrier when available.

C- I want to be a dedicated anti-tank infantry !
I love you already !

1- Buy jeep with anti-armor upgrade once rank 2
2- Kill a few tanks with fausts, buy anti-tank mines. You're ready to go tank hunting !
Okay now so you have basically two choices of weapon : either stay with the starter SA rifle, or the unscoped BA rifle. The SMG is too heavy for you to carry especially later when you'll have the bazooka.
3- If you want the BA rifle, then you need first to level up your SA rifle ribbon. Save money, it's expensive. But still go tank hunting when you see them !
4- Whatever your choice of weapon will be, modify it without using special ammunition. Damage is good for BA rifle, for SA rifle I pick either stability or damage.
4- After a while, when you'll have some spare credits without anything to spend on, then consider buying the bazooka/panzershreck. It's very expensive but much worth the price.
5- When you feel you're done with weapons, buy the two other vehicles available, the motorbike and the APC.

D- I want to be a crew man and lead mighty tanks !
1- Get an infantry rank 2 and buy the jeep with anti-armor equipment. That'll be your second soldier, not your crew man. You'll use it if you run out of credits to repair your tanks or refill ammo, or when tank assault teams are depleted. Stay with your basic SA and don't buy anything else, or modifications or special ammunition.
2- Recruit another infantry, get him to rank 3 without the jeep. Switch to tank crew.
3- Congratulations you have your first tank ! Level it up. Target infantry only, they're only tankettes and don't do anything on enemy tanks. Hide in spots where you believe enemy soldiers will go, and gun down that infantry.
4- Buy the second light tank. Or if you're german and brave, skip it and save money to buy the third tank.
5- When you have the second or third tank, consider buying the first SMG. It might be useful.

That's all ! Feel free to level up your infantry soldier as you please.

E- I want to be a pilot !
Same steps as the crew man (paragraph D), but with your second recruit switch to pilot.

F- I want to be a machine gunner !
1- Get an infantry rank 2 and buy the jeep with anti-armor equipment.
2- Level up your basic SA rifle. Don't buy anything else, either modifications or special ammo.
3- Once you'll have it leveled enough, buy the first Light Machine Gun.
4- Level up your first LMG. If you really like it feel free to buy modifications, especially regarding rate of fire and stability.
5- If you want to, buy the second LMG (it's very expensive and long to unlock !)
6- Buy additional equipement : grenades or mines. You are limited in space, so you might also just run with your LMG and more ammo.
7- Buy additional vehicles.
You're good to go !

II. And what about... more uncommon builds .

1- The "I do both long-range and close quarter combat".

Buy a smg AND a bolt-action rifle. Get the hoarder perk so you have some more ammunition.
Congratulations you can both pick targets at range and assault positions !
Yes, it's evil. Don't waste your bullets though, they're precious. Take a jeep with crates, you'll need it.

2- The "Not-So-Sniper-Recon".

As a recon, buy an SMG. Yes, it's quite useless compared to basic infantry but you'll be quite a surprise for the enemy ! :D That's NOT a GOOD build, recon teams have a lot fewer manpower than classical infantry assault teams so you'll be just wasting previous slots if you die. That's just a troll build. If you want to be a true SMGer, be an infantry.

If you have more "uncommon" or "troll builds", please message me in comments and I'll add them !
III. Frequently Asked Questions And Other Tips.
Here are questions that I see frequently in the comments section of this guide, in forums or in game. I'll try to make a list and reply the best I can to most of them.

Order :
A- Factions and Wars
B- Items and Character Customisation
C- Strategic Map and "Generals" part
D- Gameplay

A. Factions and wars related questions

1. Which faction is better ?

None. Even though they are not the exact copies of each other they are balanced in one way or another.

Most people prefer the ironsight of the US Garand rifle. However reloading makes a very distinct sound which is like telling to all germans around "I'm out of ammo !".

The US light tanks are usually better than the German ones. The main reason is that US light tanks present in game were put into service much more recently than german ones who might date around the beginning of the WW2 ! The PZ 38T is still ok though, but simply not the best.
So mostly it comes down to personal tastes, factions are very similar.

2. Which faction should I join ?

Several reasons to consider :
- You have to be in the same faction than your friends ! You can not change until the war is over.
- Which faction you think is more classy.
- It is wise to get into the faction with the fewer people as queues for battles will be shorter.
- Germany is sandwitched by both USA and Soviet Russia, might need more people than the other 2. (No it's not german propaganda ! Or only a little :p). Fighting on both sides might grant you faster queues.

3. Is choosing a war important ?

Yes, wars are like servers. if you are not in the same war as your friends you can not play with them !
You have to wait until wars are over to be able to play with your friends again.

4. How long a war can last ?

From days to weeks I believe. Depends.

B. Items and character customisation

1. This game is so Pay To Win ! Everything needs gold !

Not at all. In fact you have to unlock them before the option to purchase them with credits appear.
It's actually a very poor UI design that make you think you need gold to buy an item, while you just need to unlock it in order for the credit price to show up.
EVERYTHING CAN BE EARNED WITH CREDITS EARNABLE IN GAME (EXCEPT SOME CAMOS, but it's hardly an enormous advantage.)

2. When I change the class of one character do I get a new character ?

No, the character will be switched to this new class and you won't get another character.

3. I can only purchase new soldier classes with gold !

With only credits you need to level up an infantry (the one you start with, or the ones you can purchase with credits) to the experience needed to swich them to the desired class. Then you have to pay a certain fee and voilà, your infantry has become a tank crew/pilot/paratrooper/recon !

4. Does it cost anything to switch a character to a new class ?

Yes. It's around 20K to switch your infantry to another class, and 2k5 to switch back to infantry. See part IV.

5. Omg I didn't followed your guide and transformed my infantry as a crewman at rank 3. Am I screwed ?

Not at all. Just save enough credits to buy a new infantry.

6. Mod/ammo for weapons ?

Ammo gets very expensive so no. Mods are OK.

C. Strategic map and "generals" part related

1. How can I become a General ?

You need to level up one character high enough to promote him general.

2. Can I command troops without having a general ?

Yes ! Each soldier get 1 command point at level 12, and more at level 15+. They can command their own type (infantry can command infantry teams, tanks tanks AT etc)... they also earn xp when their AT score points (in fact that's how soldiers level up from level 12 !). Since infantry cost 2 command points you can only command a guard unit at level 12.

3. How do I earn warfunds ?

You earn it by playing classical battles. You also earn it when your assault teams manage to defeat the enemy.

4. Can I just purchase tanks and steamroll everyone with them ?

No, you need to replace equipement looses of your AT (that includes tanks). So you need infantry in order to gain enough warfunds and re-equip your tank brigades.

5. Can I join the battles my assault teams are fighting in ?

Yes, you have the option to join directly on the strategic map. When you move your AT to a battlefield, click on it and join.

D. Gameplay questions

1. How can I destroy tanks ?

There are multiple ways :
- Available right at the beginning you can find crates with panzerfausts at some spawn points. Ask people in game if you don't know where they are. Be careful, if you switch your weapon you'll lose the panzerfaust !
- You can modify your jeep to carry panzerfausts. That's actually the second thing you should do in game after buying the jeep. Panzerfausts are unlimited but they have a certain respawn time.
- The best way : get a bazooka/panzershreck as detailed in the guide.
- Anti-tank grenades are also great. However you need to be close and they are expensive to resplenish after battle. That should be you "whoops I don't have any other anti-tank right now" solution.
- Mines are nice and unlockable early, but allies can also explode on them. Be prepared to have a lot of teamkills. However their damage is awesome. To use them offensively drop one near the enemy tank and shoot it with your gun. It'll explode and destroy the tank in one hit. See the perfect guide here !
- Tanks and planes. Note that the first light tanks in the game are tankettes and only have machineguns so you will have trouble to destroy enemy tanks with it.

Don't forget to aim the sides and the back of tanks or you might have trouble to penetrate the armor.

2. Can I oneshot chest kill with rifles ?

Yes, but only with bolt-action rifles and they need to be fully moded to maximize damage.
Infantry can buy unscoped bolt action rifles. Only recon can buy scoped rifles.
Tank crews, pilots and paratroopers can not use bolt-action rifles.

3. Omg these queue times are too long ! How come people can play this game ?

Actually they are very over-estimated most of the time. It should take around 2-4 minutes at most. If it's still too long you have the option to join directly a battle without waiting. You can do by seaching manually for battles.

E. Veteran and gold questions

1. Do I need gold to play the game ?

Not at all. Gold make buying items, characters and assault teams faster. You don't have to unlock them. It's just to obtain items you want faster.

2. Do I need veteran to play the full game ?

Not at all. Veteran bring you very useful advantages such as faster character progression (ribbons and experience), faster credits and warfunds earning rates and a second equippable perk. That's very useful, but not necessary at all to enjoy the game.

3. I want to have all the necessary stuff with only gold. How much should it be ?

So you want one of each class with proper weapons and equipment ?
it should be around 65€. Don't do that unless you want to support devs

4. Omg this economic model sucks. Why have they done this ?

You get a free game. If you don't want to grind you pay a lot. If you want to grind faster pay a little. That seems fair right ? Time is money.

It also has a lot of benefits : population is MUCH higher for such a game made by a small team especially since it's on steam. It was absolutely necessary for a big scale war game like this to run.
You don't want 3 simultaneous battles with queue times of 7 hours right ?

5. I play a lot : should I buy stuff with gold or go veteran ?

Go veteran ! You'll earn credits and experience much faster so you'll be able to unlock and buy things quickly. Spending gold is useful only to get items very hard to unlock (heavy tanks , mgs).
Rest => go vet.

True it is a good loadout, but imo this is a bit too cheesy to add that on a newbie guide ;)

If you want to play as a tanker, then you can indeed swich from infantry to tanker. I guess it's in the interface where you can click on the 3 rank with the class thing, I don't remember exactly. But it shouldn't be hard.
You will automatically have the starter tank once it is done.

I recommend you to recruit another infantry before switching to tanker though, as you'd lose your only infantryman. Tanks are not that good to make money, and buying a new tank cost some. Playing infantry is also necessary because you migh lose all the tanks during the battle, thus you need to go infantry if you want to finish it.
