Companions guide.
By Barnaky
Companions require a few requisites to be met in order to join you. There is a maximum number of companions one may have. Take the player character's Charisma stat and divide it by two. Example: 2 Charisma - 1 companion while 10 Charisma - 5 companions . With the perk Magnetic Personality the Chosen One gains one more allowable companion.

The New NPCs from EPA:
!!! Fallout 2 Restoration Project required !!!

Kitsune:

Need charisma of at least 5, or CH 2 or more + speech higher than 80 % for her to join you. You only get one shot, if you fail she's gone for good. She is, well was a Chinese spy working for the Americans. If you ask her about her past you can eventually get her to teach you some of her skills. You gain +10% to your sneak, lockpick and steal skills.

Her main skill is lockpicking, and as long as her skill is better than yours, she will help you with it (like Vic with repair). As for combat skills, she's best with unarmed, melee, small guns and throwing - in that order. She can use all weapons, but she's rather bad with energy and big guns. She starts out with 80 HP and ends up with 130 HP and her AP will always be the 9 she starts with.

If you have left her out of your party and try to get her back while having CH 1, she will leave and disappear for good.

Cat Jules:

He used to be in the army, but was reassigned to guard duty at the EPA where he volunteered to some human/feline DNA experimentation. (He's basically a tribute to Cat, a character from the British Sci-Fi-comedy series "Red Dwarf".) If you ask he can give you some weapon training (+10% to small guns, Big Guns and Energy Weapons).

Notable skills; Small Guns, Energy Weapons, Unarmed, melee and on his final level a passable Big Guns skill. He can use all weapons, though he's not very good at throwing. He starts out with 80 HP and ends up with 130 HP, and his AP starts at 8 and ends at 10 on his last level.

Same as with Kitsune, if you ever have a CH of 1 when you try to recruit him or pick him up again, he will vanish from the game.

Dex:

A sociopathic killer and worse according to his files, innocent according to himself (He would say that wouldn't he?). If you play an evil character (negative karma) he will not pretend to be innocent. In fact, if you ask for his life's story, he'll tell you all about it. Good characters will never get to know, but maybe its better that way. He is easy to anger before you've recruited him, so pick your lines carefully or he'll go hostile. If you ask him if he can give you any tips, he'll teach you +15% speech and barter.

His main skill is speech, but unfortunately he cannot help you with that in any way. He's also good with Melee and Unarmed. Small guns are OK and Energy Weapons and throwing skill are passable on his last level. Unfortunately the weapons he can use are limited to unarmed, knives, pistols and sub-machine guns. He starts out with 80 HP and ends up with 130 HP, and his AP will stay the 8 he starts with until his last level, when it when it changes to 9.

*Female characters have the option to sleep with him before he is recruited. If you are good or neutral though (0 to positive karma), he will kill you afterward. So maybe not such a good idea.

For those who want at least one of the Marriage character to be useful and gain extra companions, I suggest getting the Restoration Project - Companion Expansion mod along with the RPU mod.
Companion Expansion adds 9 new companions (6 from FO2 and 3 originals).
In the mod, Miria is actually useful, can be told to wait without divorcing her or selling her as a slave. Angela Bishop is also a recruitable companion under certain conditions and has her own "Trust" meter.

RPU: https://github.com/BGforgeNet/Fallout2_Restoration_Project

If you're looking for variety or just want to add more girls to your party, checkout RP-CE, install FO2 Tweaks, enable Unlimited Companions in FO2 Tweaks, and get crackin!

Thanks for this. I did not realize that John Cassidy had such a good rating in energy weapons and also a couple of other things you listed for some of the other companions. Nice Job.:ne:

follow up: myron, lenny, and the marriages are probably the worst companions and dont use them. all canines are about the same it just depends on who and what you use them or want them for. On top of that when i say everyone needs a gauss, thats just because i do a lot of trading and can end up with 5 gauss weapons before clearing out mariposa. many of my playthroughs take over 30 hours and i like taking my time doing everything every single time. just bc is occupies me. in my current PT im using bozar and mega power fist with ADV PA, marcus runs avenger and currently has like 4000 bullets, sulik has PA and super sledge, Cass has PA and gauss rifle with about 400, Vic has PA and gauss also about 400, Skynet has gauss and he has abt 300. vic replaced goris because imo goris sucks, he does little damaage late game and is only a bullet sponge for marcus and you.
Geneva Suggestion 20 Jun, 2022 @ 1:23am
In my experience marcus needs a minigun, his best i the avenger. hes a great tank and let him go into most fights alone or dont get in his way. the lasers are good for him sniping but imo he shouldnt be used that way
Cass needs a sniper, whatever you can get him early on before getting him a gauss. he can chill on his own and is a vital companion
Sulik is good with knives until you get him a super sledge, he dominates with it and partnered with PA he's a phenomenal tank.
Vic is good late game so give him PA and a gauss like cass
Skynet is a fantastic pick, he needs a gauss to be most efective for you
and thats a normal set up, obviously use other companions you like as filler or who you want to use, but these are the guys i use most

zeiss131 let me rephrase that: He either blows me apart with a gatling gun, blows me up with a rocket launcher, or cooks me with an energy weapon or flamer. [somehow he can one-shot me with any weapon even when I'm wearing power armor] I WILL admit I have unbelievably poor luck when it comes to video games, you should watch my try to play classic Fire Emblem games.

I am currently running around with Skynet, Vic, Cassidy, Marcus, and Sulik.

Got the shades and magnetic personality so I could get away with 5 companions with a 7 charisma.

Excellent guide!
John Cassidy has the widest range of combat skills and preferences of all npc's (besides Sulik) and will usually outperform any other party members in combat.... especially if you are stuck in a prolonged fight. He won't randomly nuke kids with plasma grenades, and it's pretty rare that he'll fire on friendlies due to a bit of stray burst fire. He can use every top tier small arms and melee weapon with effectiveness which allows you to take him on all sorts of role plays. He's a great choice if you want to run a 2 or 3 person party.
zeiss131 30 Dec, 2020 @ 5:02am
To the people saying Marcus blows you to shreds, try giving him a plasma rifle. Anything with burst is really bad for companions in general. I've had trouble with Cassidy and Vic constantly killing Sulik in the early game, then I got them Gauss rifles and they're awesome again.
FurryMIG 17 Nov, 2020 @ 1:41am
I never take Marcus. First turn of every battle with him in it, he blows my character apart, never hesitating to shoot through my character to hit an enemy, and he always seems to get a turn before me.
