All you need to know
see screenshots:
1) build a door in the path of the attackers; close to your reactor – but with enought space to array 3-4 rows of turrets
2) build two walls in 90 degrees angle to the left and right

- 1 Turret and a turret for yourself is enough for the beginning
- equip yourself with a repair gun an post yourself just behind the door; if enemies attack the door – and they will attack only the door! –, repair it; 2 guns are enought for the start (each wave!); later you'll need 8 per wave

3) make sure you all other space around your reactor ist closed either by mud/stone or walls
- make sure your door is the weakest point in your defense wall system

4) build more and more turrets just behind the doors – snipers are best; just some MGs; some bombs, too

4) build a second and later a third door
- always just close 1 door! – to make the door APPARENTLY still the weakest point of your defense
- in later waves, if the outermost door is near to breach, just retreat a step behind the second and close it; repeat repairing this one

5) reinforce the angled walls at your door
- with the time, reinforce your walls with a second and a third row (can be the cheapest; later reinforce the outer ones to lv2 where needed)

- protect your doors additionally with foam

- always look out to leave a free path from your door to the reactor even for the big guys – else, they will attack elsewhere
Underlying mechanics
- bugs will attack the least reinforced side of your base on their way to your reactor
- so building thick walls in the main route will only lead to bugs attacking from another side - an thus making your reinforcements useless
- you will want the bugs attack just one side of your base over and over again: where your gun nest is
- so you have to make the wall in front of your guns the weakest
- problem: it won't stand the later waves

question: how to make a wall that ist APPARENTLY weak to attract (nearly) ALL bugs – but strong enough to last the biggest waves?

answer: an array of 3 doors – just one closed at a time – with in a wall array of 1-3 walls/earth around your core

Biggest one I noticed after so many hours playing:
Gates stop enemy projectiles where walls do NOT. So layer(s) of wall facing enemy then layer of a gate then turrets makes all the difference for those open sides or outposts.

That one is a nice idea but didn´t work well. They won´t go for the door, even when everything is around like 3 fully upgrades walls

This was helpful to get my brain around playing at first. I have one question/quibble though. In my tests, turrets cannot shoot over foam (I expect foam is being classed as floor to ceiling similar to dirt/metal/lumen). So sticking foam between your gates limits the field of fire greatly.

From what i can tell, creatures attack via the shortest route, including destroying gates / digging. Sometimes worms, which dig faster than they destroy, will path different routes to the swarm.

nice

I had only one door, in 3 layers of walls in all other entries + front walls were max upgraded.
However, second try went better.

@LazerMax: I myself had problems with the later waves of the basic map. How did you survive?

@Vengeance: Did you closed all 3 doors from your secondary entry – and just closed ONE door from your primary entry?

Does it still work? As soon I get a second entry to my base enemies are coming from both sides, even if I block the second way with 3 walls.

Nice tutorial. Are there actually any difficult maps that would require using it? All the maps I've played were barely any hard to complete.
