Writing Songs for Heroes
Race and Class
Every set of traits is linked to either a hero's race, or their class. Those won't ever change. However, the weapon they choose to wield and their stats will slightly differ, so you'll want to try and keep an eye out for the best choice depending on your choice of lyrics you're planning to write.

Weapons
This is more important than you may realize. A lot of lyrics involve bonuses directed specifically towards the hero's choice of weapon for their class. I'll be more specific later in the class ballads, but I thought it important to know this now. So, keep this in mind because you'll want to have all your Assassins wielding Daggers.

Weapon scaling grades are always consistent unless they've been altered and improved by the use of Gems. Grades start at E and improve all the way up to S affecting the amount of damage dealt.

Types of Lyrics
There are a total of 46 possible lines to choose from to write your three verse ballad of 10 each. Eight of them are the chorus, which means they can be written any number of times in the same ballad. Every other line is unique to the song and can only be written once.

Planning Ahead
It's best to start a song knowing exactly how you plan on shaping the story. For example, if you don't plan on having any Undead in the squad, it's probably best you don't sing any lyrics containing tales of resurrection. Thus, having a few spare candies laying around will help forge an unforgettable ballad to be passed down the generations to be sung for ages to come.
Ballad Chapter 1
Chapter 1
- There are 15 lines to choose from to complete the first chapter of the ballad. Only 2 of them are chorus lines, and can only write 9 because each ballad starts with random lyrics for the first line.

And the earth was covered with gold (chorus)

Chapter 2
- With a new set of 18 lines to choose from, you get to pick all 10 of your favorites, but no longer have the options to select any previously available during Chapter 1.

+200% camp regen

Accuracy and lethality
Accuracy increases crit damage. 1 accuracy = 5% crit damage

50% chance to automatically pick up the fallen cheese. Max. power of cheese strike: 300% instead of 100%

Knights get +5 to strength and constitution

Behold, the power of wood!
x4 stumps damage and HP

Beneath the great armor they knew no wounds
If the hero has more than 50% HP left after taking damage, that hero gets 2 seconds of invulnerability

+1 to the dexterity scaling for all weapons

Two hawks appear, 3x gold from rabbits and other creatures

Onyx Gem: +10 to base damage instead of +3 to base damage

Undead gain 1 resurrection charge and 50% damage

Arrows set enemies on fire. Strength of fire depends on arrow damage.

After rebirth, the hero makes extra turn

Ballad Chapter 3
Chapter 3
- Only 13 lines in the last chapter, so it should be pretty straight forward to choose the 10 best. "Ah, how it all began!.." can be a great option to be able to choose from the pool of 15 lines from Chapter 1 again, but will cost a line with no rewards.

Get a random gnome

Don't look for water - let it burn (chorus)
+100% damage from fire

Run, rabbit, run (chorus)
+300% gold from rabbits and other creatures. Creatures appear more often.

Events appear less frequently, but their reward is higher

Chapter 4
- A new interesting set of 16 lines focused on increased the amount of damage your squad does by even greater proportions.

And darkness grew in them (chorus)
2 extra marks when applying marks

Inflate your body into a balloon shape (chorus)
8% chance that when the monster dies it explodes and creates columns of fire around itself. The damage dealt by this fire is based on the monster's max HP.

Magic is welcome on our friendly team (chorus)
Additional 50% damage to all wands and staffs, get Lazurite

Multiply your riches! (chorus)
500% gold from chests. 150% extra gold from all sources. 5% chance of multiplying the gold you get by 10.

A wise man sheds no blood
Wand, staff and mace get +2 to scaling from wisdom

And my bow with you
Elves fire 1 extra arrow

And the saber cuts with a whisper
Saber gets +5 to damage for each stone inserted

Axe porridge is the best food!
Axe can be added as a spice to the dish, +1 to scaling from the strength of all axes.

Breathe in the wonderful perfume
If a hero has at least one flower, the hero's HP and damage are increased x1.5 times.

Five meals is the only time when I enjoy the taste...
When using soup, 5 portions are used and the action time does not increase. Gourmets get x10 to HP and damage during the meal.

Ballad Chapter 5
Chapter 5
- We get to see something fresh and different for the first time in our long heroic tale of the bard. Not only will there be songs, but now immortalized in paintings. There are 12 options to choose from, but this time only one may be selected.

Aim, Fire!
Archers get an extra move at the beginning of each wave. Archers release 1 extra arrow.

Army of shadows
x100 damage from invisibility. (instead of x10). Invisible units have a 99% chance of avoiding a hit.

Cheese cellar
Blessing of the cheese hit no longer has a maximum and its lifetime becomes infinite.

City of elves
Elves' dexterity, wisdom and accuracy are tripled. Elves gain a resurrection charge.

End of rainbows
Periodically, a rainbow appears, which collects all rabbits and other creatures. x10 gold from rabbits. As long as the rainbow is active, chance for crit is doubled.

Flower meadow
Get a rose, a daisy and a tulip. (double effect of the flowers)

In the camp
x4 cure rate in the camp. 5 extra soup in the camp. A "Pep" blessing is given. (15% to damage, HP, gold and inspiration for 200 seconds).

Indestructible army of death
10 constitution to all undead units. 1 resurrection charge to all undead units

Magic resonance
x100 damage of small MIRV charges

Power of fire
x2 fire damage. x1.5 burning duration. x1.5 the size of pillars of fire

Sing me some more
Power of all choruses doubles.

Universal form of swords
Swords gain 1 to all scaling, but scaling of swords can no longer be higher than A. 50 to basic sword damage.
Ballad Chapter 6
- Returning to our song, we have the greatest selection and hardest choice to make in this chapter of 26 possible lines.

For ancient dagger, whom in a chest, there is apprentice found (chorus)
In next chest thief will find a dagger instead of gold, and will become a dagger master

Learn from crayfish, who drag from floor (chorus)
Gold from enemy heroes 500% gold from chests 100%

Soak up the wisdom of ages (chorus)

Heroes with invulnerability get a Courage Charge for every second of invulnerability (minimum 1 charge)

Archers with dexterity greater than 10 deal x3 damage. Archers with accuracy greater than 10 deal x3 damage from a crit.

Priests and mages with wands get a second wand and release two magical projectiles each
Ballad Chapter 7
-I believe this is the first chapter that doesn't feature any chorus lines. There are 25 to choose from.

Bright stones are for bright minds
Lazurite and rhodonite +1 to wisdom scaling

Bull's eye!
Archers deal x1000 damage if there is only one enemy left on battlefield.

Elven magic splits the arrow
Archers get ricochet ability. (The arrow jumps from one monster to another 5 times)

Fly fly my little star
Arrows and magical orbs deal 5x damage.

From now on you are a flag bearer!
Give flag to hero. Hero's weapon is replaced by flag, but all heroes gain bonus to morale: 500% to damage.

Hello darkness my old friend
Effectiveness of dark marks increases by 500%

In the dense spruce forest hides a grunting ally
Goblins sit on boars. Boar: Initiative 5, HP and damage x5, 1 extra hit at the beginning of wave.

An especially rare variety of cheese appears - roquefort! These cheeses give 10 times cheese blessing and do not disappear on earth.

Now it's my turn.
If melee hero survives a melee hit, he makes repel against enemy that hit him, dealing x5 damage. If hero has shield, damage is x500

Perseverance of the undead is infinite
Undead gain +10 wisdom. When undead hero dies and is reborn, at moment of rebirth all heroes in team gain +5 admiration. Admiration: spend an admiration charge to deal x10 damage, or reduce damage you take by 10.

Roses on our shields!
People: flowers become 3 times more effective.

Rough stone is a comfort to war.
Bulat and garnet: +1 to strength scaling.

Snails are profitable!
+1000% gold from snails.

Snake stone jade and yellow eye tourmaline
Jade and tourmaline: +1 to dexterity scaling.

Temper your arrogance - so says the teachings of the candle
It is possible to hire an additional Master of candle. Master of candle is guaranteed to show up for hire in first position.

The candle burns, grieving enemies
Masters of candle set enemies on fire and deal x10 damage.

To ashes we shall wipe out traitor god
Cultists can desecrate altars. Desecrating an altar gives Cultist +300 ritual dagger damage and a special "Cult" blessing for 500 seconds. (x10 damage to cultists, x10 fire damage)

WOW! TOAD! So beautiful!
At sight of dragons and toads all heroes get +4 admiration.
Tarot Cards
-Currently a total of 19 possible tarot cards choosing from 3 at a time.




Death
Undead heroes on death deal 66% of their damage to a random enemy and place a dark mark on them.

Judgement
Get ambrosia. 2x damage to bosses.

Justice
All heroes now share a common HP pool. Each time a hero takes damage, damage is distributed among HP of all heroes. Heroes do not regenerate HP between waves.

Strength
All heroes get 1 to strength.

Temperance
You can have no more than 5 soups per game. Total squad damage x5. Total hero HP x5.

The Chariot
Game speed increases by 10%. Get 3 tulips. Combo hits are speeded up considerably.

The Devil
Damage from fire is increased by 3 times. 50% chance not to take fire damage. 50% chance to additionaly ignite enemy on impact.

The Emperor
Chance is higher for Knights, Legionaries, Archers, Priests, Lumberjacks, hapy monks and priests of light, but the chance of thieves, bandits, assassins, cultists and dark priests is lower.

The Fool
Heroes get dealy jokes. (Sometimes hero can tell a joke and deal 20% damage to a random enemy)

The Hanged Man
Full automation of everything. Everything is decided for you.

The Hermit
No soup. Gold receive is reduced by 99%. Instead of receiving soups, get lazurite (1 to wisdom).

The Hierophant
All priests releases 2 charges at time (works on regular priests, priests of Light and dark priests). Priests gains 1.5 seconds of invulnerability at the beginning of each wave.

The High Priestess
It is possible to pray at altars without priest. Quicker use of altar. Blessings last 50% longer and altars gives one more blessing.

The Moon
Elves gain silver arrows and blades(swords, rapiers, sabers, daggers). Silver damage: x3 damage on critical hit, hero is healed by 50% damage dealt. In dungeons all damage of elves is increased by 20 times.

The Star
25% inspiration.

The Sun
Quick conversation with tree. Damage is increased by 2 times in open terrain. Get camomile.

The Tower
Chests opens without thieves. Fast chest opening. Chests contain 2 times more gold.

The World
Increases likelihood of random evens, number of creatres and cheese. Occasionally a rainbow appears. Unique creates appear. Added 2 hawks. Hawks are getting smarter.

Wheel of Fortune
Heroes are always lucky. (chance of critical hits is 2 times highter, 20% chance to find x5 gold in chest).

Goblins
Goblins may be small and weak, but despite their size, are quick on their feet. They are very Cunning and have lots of dexterity. However, it more than makes up for the constitution penalty they suffer. Because of this, they are best suited for classes capable of striking fast, from afar, or lurking in the shadows.

Humans
Humans star the game without any special bonuses. However, they have the unique ability to obtain them later through the Writer's Shop. This can be changed at any time and should be selected based on what's most suitable for the team.

Human Philosophy
Humans have a unique book listed under Questionable Techniques. It basically allows you to further customize the humans in the squad based on their tactics. This makes Humans the most versatile race, and have the most freedom to go with whatever build is chosen.

Stoicism
A great all-round choice. All Humans now come equipped with these traits making them great at taking blows to the face as well as the knowledge of magic. This makes them great for both defender classes such as a Knight providing further increases to HP, or magic-bearing classes wielding Staffs and Wands.

Hedonism
A perfect option for mimicking the Ballad of Orcs, or pairing with the Ballad of Soup.

Anti-intellectualism
Best used when making an army of Legionnaires or Lumberjacks.

Pragmatism
This is the best choice for Human Thieves, Assassins, and Archers.

Existentialism
If you plan on making a heroic squad of 30 Druids and 30 Stumps, this choice goes hand-in-hand with Staffs when taking the more damage approach.

Asceticism
Improves the effectiveness of weapons, but you're still probably best doing it with gems anyways, so I'd personally avoid this one.

Quantum Mysticism
If this game had a pseudo-multiplayer where you got to face off against other player squads, they would absolutely hate you for this choice with a team of knights. However, there is a line of lyrics that does this same thing, and better too. If you don't want to waste a line on it, then this might actually come in handy when fighting bosses.

Orcs
Orcs will always come with a bonus to Constitution and Strength. They even have a unique racial trait called Gourmet. They share their protective nature with the humans, but also like to get their hands dirty by getting up close and personal with the enemy. They hunger for grub and blood.

Master Classes
Dagger Masters
To be honest, this master is kind of pointless to bring along unless most of your party is wielding daggers. And, while it's possible to have up to 11 of them at a time, it's not remotely worth the hassle to make it happen.

Dark Masters
Kind of another pointless master if I'm being frank. Even with the majority of the heroes being undead, they revive like 6 times, so they already effectively have 6x HP.

Master of Candle
The only Master of any value. Even if he doesn't contribute directly to the battle at hand, his ability to bless the fighting warriors is tremendous. It doesn't matter what mishmash of a team you've managed to scavenge together.

Shooting Masters
Much like the Dagger Master, unless both the front and backline of the squad is comprised of Archers, then you probably won't be benefiting from this guy. I would maybe change my opinion if the +5 Accuracy was applied to everyone.

Sword Masters
Another selective Master in the offerings of his teachings. He only enhances the ability of melee heroes excluding axes and maces.
Ballad of Soup
Paired best with Orcs because of Gourmet trait.

Once you start to add in Squad Health, Weapons, or the use of Soup, the highest wave capable only scales evenly. After Books from the Writer's Shop have been read, or lines to the ballad have been written, these tables no longer apply.

However, with that said, I would still consider Orcs to be a powerful starter race to take you pretty far. Because of Gourmet and the benefits Soup provides, Orcs just might be the best of the races. At a certain breaking point, with the available song lyrics, All races are viable in strength with the bonuses they receive.

The Undead are able to stay in battle for an indefinite amount of time proving to be formidable with their growing number of times they can revive. Elves and Goblins end up sharing a lot of traits, but have their own as well. Eventually Goblins become a nuisance to kill with their vast amounts of gold spent on the squad health they originally lacked. Plus, Elves also turn into zombies almost making the actual Undead moot.

While some classes may work best in large numbers such as legionnaires and lumberjacks, most others are suitable for any accompanying arrangement as well as being able to hold their own better in battle. A few classes are kind of pointless no matter what (Bandits, Mercenaries, Thieves), so it would probably be best to avoid learning their trade from their respective books effectively making it more difficult to organize the perfect party.

For example, a single beast is hands down able to make it the furthest, but when you try to stack them up, end up falling apart. Even though Legionnaires can become a strong organized army, and Lumberjacks can land one hell of a whooping, it would still be smart to have some defensive and sustainability by incorporating a few knights and priests in the mix.

Druids can effectively conjure up a team of 60 squad members, and even continue to summon more stumps as they fall. Assassins can land a nuclear bomb from the shadows with critical hits before the enemies have a chance to even think about retaliating. Knights can stand their grand for a very long time, but often need help with quicker damage.

Originally, I was able to make it to Zone 50 with a bunch of Goblin Assassins choosing the right lyrics to tell my story. I've since learned a lot of different techniques with the continuing updates that are possibly better. A volley of quick fire arrows, or a cult of mages also seem to work their magic.

In a nutshell, mix it up, but have a strong focus on how you plan to build your squad. I'd say that choosing a class is more important that picking a race, but when given the option, try to select Orcs, then Elves, then Goblins? There are more than enough ballad lines to give you what you need specifically while having a few to spare into earning extra gold. Sometimes, you may just need to include a unique junk line to avoid paying candy fees.
Damage Analysis
Onyx Gems vs Blades cut the truth (chorus)
- A couple of people have stated that "The power of the empire is steel and fire!" is a strong early pick for your ballad. So, I decided to do a cross comparison between damage related lyrics and the amount of total damage it adds to the team.
Example 1 - The Power of the empire is steel and fire!

- It takes all 3 Onyx gems to be placed onto a single hero to increase his damage by roughly 90%.
- Instead of using a line in the ballad, you can level weapons 45 times.

Example 2 - Ignite your weapon with darkness

- A single Onyx with increased power doubles a heroes damage
- Paired with Example 1, stacking 3 on a hero increases damage by 300%.
- Alternatively, 1 Onyx on 3 different heroes will have the same effect on total damage output, which is better.

Example 3 - Blades cut the truth (chorus)

- The chorus not only increases the damage for a hero by 100%, but it's effective for the entire team, not just up to 3 heroes.
- Repeating this line a second time in place of the above two further increases damage of all heroes by another 100%. In other words, 300% total damage.

Conclusion
To obtain the same amount of power as one line of "Blades cut the truth," you would need an Onyx+10 gem (450 weapon upgrades) on every hero. It's better to repeat "Blades cut the truth" twice rather than sing "The power of the empire is steel and fire!" and "Ignite your weapon with darkness."

I've got a question ive unlocked undead quest for 130, but it doesnt seem to work. its suppose to get a dark mark for every time an undead hero hits something right?

If you're still updating this, Ballad 7 just got released. Plus also new classes in the Cultist (Basically a dagger unit whose base damage increases with each hit/kill) and Priest of Light (Whose the opposite of the Dark Priest, Increasing your heroes damage by 1% with each courage they give).
