Wasteland Remastered

Wasteland Remastered

Odd controls and issues that are best to know before you play (no spoilers)
By Baraz
There are odd controls and systems in Wasteland 1 (both original and remastered) that often block the players progression, until they can figure out how to do it. These are not spoilers nor quests solutions, but just game controls that are very hard to figure out on your own. This guide is purposefully short and practical, explaining how to interact with objects and NPCs and bypass some oddities.

Problematic interactions and how to make them work (zero spoilers)
Bobby bug :
You need to talk to him until he ends the conversation and leaves, otherwise the quest does not progress. This seems related to the order in which you ask your questions. Try until it works (if you still see him there, the quest is not truly started).

The next NPC you meet for a quest :
She will not speak to you and you cannot interact with her. ... ... You have to use the Encounter button (combat) and Hire her. This is true of many other NPCs that say... nothing, but can be Hired. A few will sometimes talk to you.

Failing to give an item to a story character (NPC) for unknown reasons :
Relatively early in the game, there is a quest where you will be asked to take a seat and there you might try putting a certain item on the table, try using the item in their direction or talking to them (using Charisma/Confidence), but none of this will work (!). You must stand on the seat in front of them and use the item on ... ... "yourself" (spacebar). This makes no sense and is quite an annoyance. I found the solution only thanks to online comments.

On the other hand, sometimes using an item in direction of the non-player character works. Odd design.

Interacting with objects in the world (doors, computers, fragile walls, etc.) :
Sometimes you will need to use an item or skill in the direction of the object, but other times you must use it on your own area/self: it is not consistant. For most doors, for example, you will use a skill in its direction, but there are odd exceptions.

A certain locked safe ... :
You will find clues about the safe, but you might need to make over 100 passive Perception checks to even see it! (no joke) With Perception 2, it took me over 100 checks (pressing Escape makes you pass a turn on the spot) and of course I used a guide to make sure I was on the correct spot. Once you *finally* see it, you need to enter the numbers separated by -, or it will not work. Here, inXile actually fixed a bug: this part use to be much worse!

Quest items can be dropped / destroyed (!) :
Again, this is a game where you want to use the fandom wiki often to make sure a quest item is no longer needed (having 10 keys and 5 other needless quest items takes up precious space). Keep a hard save before dropping a special item.

nb: I was using the fandom wiki litterally many times per hour.

Combat Shooting skill does nothing
The skill Combat Shooting, which can only be taken at character creation, did nothing in the original game and still does nothing, but the Remaster kept the skill there for laughs it would seem. Taking this skill on a new character will grant you a Steam Achievement (for real, try it), but otherwise do not waste a skill point on this.
Check your party order
The character in the first position in your party ...
  • does the passive Perception checks as you move (Perception can also be done actively) ;
  • does the Silent Move if they have that skill (that skill is passive only and I could not tell if it ever worked).
  • ( maybe some other skill checks, but I will only write verified information here. Other skills tend to require active use, such as using Climb in a given direction.)
This basic game mechanic is not explained anywhere. I had to carefully search the fandom wiki to learn it.

Notes on party order and combat :
  • Party order does not determine who will be attacked, as you will notice. Any character can be attacked randomly.
  • Characters in the first positions will tend to act sooner for melee attacks (not always, as ranged attacks are simultaneous, affected by Speed, and occur before melee).
