[Windows] How to (maybe) get your controller working with Spark the Electric Jester 2
By SvenFletcher
Have you been struggling to get your controller working for this game, because who in their right mind would play a speedy 3D precision platformer with a mouse and keyboard? This guide will hopefully help with that.

Obviously, your mileage may vary, depending on what controller you're using. I'm currently using a PowerA brand Xbox One controller that I bought from Gamestop, but this guide should apply to most of Steam's supported controllers as well.

I'd like to also mention that I'm using Windows 10 as my OS, so if you have questions regarding a fix for this on Linux or MacOS, I can't help you. Honestly, I can't help you beyond writing this guide, so please don't write a billion comments asking for anything deeper than this, you're asking the wrong guy.

Also, I'd like to apologize in advance if this guide isn't up to the standards of the community, this is the first one I've written on here, and probably the last one I'll make for the foreseeable future.

Step 1: Updating your drivers
First, check to see if your controller's drivers are up to date. If you already know they are, you can skip to the next section.

To do this, go to Control Panel, open the Hardware and Sound category, and open Device Manager

Then, select Human Interface Devices, then click on the device you want to play with. If you're not certain which device that is, just go down the list. Yours will probably be in there somewhere. When you double-click on it, a new window will open. Swap to the "Drivers" tab, and click "Update Driver".

Odds are, your drivers are already up to date, this is really just a precaution for the next step.
Step 2: I don't really know how to title this, but it's ensuring your controller is actually linked with STEJ2.
Alright, moment of truth. Find Spark the Electric Jester 2 in your Steam Library. Then, right-click on it, and click on "Properties".

When the new window opens up, click on the "Controllers" tab, and click on "Controller General Settings", highlighted here:

When you click on that, another new window opens up, I think it's Steam's Big Picture mode or something. Anyway, you'll be on this screen, shown below:

Once you're here, click on any checkbox that you think may apply to your controller. For example, I enabled both Xbox and General Game Controller Configurations, but if you're playing with, say, a PS5 controller, you'd click the PlayStation Configuration Support checkbox, and so on and so forth.

After clicking these, you may receive a notification that you'll need to restart your computer for these changes to take effect. Go ahead and do so when you're ready.

After that, boot up Spark the Electric Jester 2 and see if it worked!
End
With luck, you managed to finally get your controller up and running and are now playing Spark the Electric Jester 2 without wanting to die! Congratulations! In lieu of flowers, just enjoy the game as best as you can.

If none of the things listed in the guide helped, and you're still stuck playing it on a Mouse and Keyboard, well, I'm truly sorry, but I can't give you any further advice. Maybe check which controllers are supported on Steam, or check if your controller's even working properly at all?

I have no idea how best to end this guide, so here's a picture of Hank Hill with a gun
