There are great guides out there on the best debuff items, but none seem to talk about what you need to do to get the necessary traits.

There is a great video out there about the "Ultimate Debuff item" by YouTuber Primalliquid.

It goes through the item to synthesize and with which traits, but not how to get the traits. However, the most complex part of alchemy in Atelier Sophie 2 is getting the traits. You should know from playing the game, but it takes a fair amount of items to figure out all the necessary steps unless you happen to have ingredients with the traits already.

The End Results We Want
The video talks about how these are the most important traits to put on the debuff item:

  • Spine Chilling
  • Demon Sonic
  • Pure White Corrosion

But if you watch the video, you'll see that rather than pulling traits from various ingredients to get them on the "Moonless Mist" item, the traits are all on the "Spirit Tears" that they use that is then transferred.

The problem is that these traits don't just come "ready" on ingredients to create the "Spirit Tears" with, so you have to combine a bunch of things to get there.
Neutralizer - White or Rainbow Neutralizer
You can create a Rainbow Neutralizer or White Neutralizer. I recommend the Rainbow Neutralizer for the extra max attributes though you may not need it.

Choose ingredients that have these traits:

  1. Red Surge
  2. Green Surge
  3. Devil's Brand

Synthesizing (recommendation only):
  • Max 1st attribute: increased max level

Traits to transfer:
  1. Yellow Rhythm (from Red & Green Surge)
  2. Devil's Brand
Weisscream
Ingredients
  • Delicious Milk or (Fruit): with "Blue Surge"
  • (Gases): use Ghost Glove
  • (Neutralizers): previously created Neutralizer

If you don't have a Delicious Milk or (Fruit) with "Blue Surge", then you'll want to create an (Elixir) with the previously created Neutralizer, such as Alchemic Clay, that will later be used to create Spirit Tears.

Synthesizing:
  • Get 2nd attribute: Add Medicinal (recommended)

You can max out the 2nd attribute so that you get Add Elixir, but that will give you less choices of high quality items that tend to be Elixirs when creating the Spirit Tears.

Traits to keep:
  1. Spine Chilling
  2. Devil’s Brand
  3. Pure White Resonance (from Yellow Rhythm & Blue Surge)
Pure Water
The Pure Water is going to need to have the other traits that you need. Either the ingredients will have to have what needs to be transferred, or the separate traits to combine into the ones to transfer.

Traits:
  1. Dark Decline (from Empty Anxiety x Invisible Illness)
  2. Sonic Throw (from Rapid Use x Rapid Use +)
Spirit Tears
Now, combine everything.

Ingredients:
  • Pure Water: previously synthesized one
  • (Elixir): previously synthesized Elixir with "Pure White Resonance" if not part of Weisscream
  • (Medicinal): previously synthesized Weisscream

Make sure to have the "Devil's Brand" trait in either the Siren's Tear or the (Elixir), if not in the Weisscream.

Traits:
  1. Pure White Corrosion (from: Dark Decline x Pure White Resonance)
  2. Demon Sonic (from: Sonic Throw x Devil’s Brand)
  3. Spine Chilling
Devil's Brand Alternative
The "Devil's Brand" trait is from the Evil Core ingredient, which is a (Jewel), and (Medicinal). You can pass this on to any Elixir that would then be used to make the Spirit Tears.

Elixir recipes that use Jewel
  • Alles Welt

Elixir recipes that use Magical
  • Alchemic Clay
  • Innocent Adamas
  • Wake-Up Flower

Another alternative is to add it to the Neutralizer, then pass it on to the Weisscream.
Example: What I ended up doing
I ended up making more than the minimum because of what was in my inventory, and in some places I was limited in what I could use.

Pure Water

This was the only place where I had "space" left for "Dark Decline". I also only had 1 item with "Invisible Illness", so I prioritized that.

Ingredients:
  • (Thread): Invisible Illness
  • (Fuel): Empty Anxiety

Traits to keep:
  1. Dark Decline (from: Empty Anxiety & Invisible Illness)

White Neutralizer

I needed a (Neutralizer) to pass traits that would eventually be used for the (Elixir) and (Medicinal) of the Spirit Tears.

Because I didn't have any Dragon Bloodstone left and didn't feel like farming for it, I synthesized a White Neutralizer.

I also introduced the "Blue Surge" trait here, because I didn't have it on the other ingredients necessary later to combine with "Yellow Rhythm", so ended up with "Pure White Resonance" earlier.

Ingredients:
  • (Magical 1): Evil Core with "Blue Surge"
  • (Magical 2) Green Surge
  • (Water): Red Surge

Traits to keep:
  1. Pure White Resonance (from: Yellow Rhythm (from: Red x Green) x Blue Surge)
  2. Devil's Brand

Elixir: Alchemic Clay

I decided on Alchemic Clay since it's inherently an (Elixir) instead of having to worry about "adding" it as a category when synthesizing.

Ingredients
  • (Magical): with "Sonic Throw"
  • (Neutralizer): previously created White Neutralizer

Traits to keep:
  1. Pure White Resonance
  2. Sonic Throw

Medicinal: Weisscream

I had to be careful here to pass the "Devil's Brand" since I accidentally had it combine with something else when making the Alchemic Clay.

Ingredients:
  • (Gases): Ghost Glove
  • (Neutralizers): previously created White Neutralizer

To make sure I could use this as a (Medicinal), I also had to be careful not to max out the 2nd attribute which would turn it into an (Elixir) instead.

Traits to keep:
  1. Spine Chilling
  2. Devil’s Brand

Spirit Tears

Finally...
  • Pure Water: previously synthesized one
  • (Elixir): previously synthesized Alchemic Clay
  • (Medicinals): previously synthesized Weisscream

Traits:
  1. Pure White Corrosion
  2. Demon Sonic (from: Sonic Throw x Devil’s Brand)
  3. Spine Chilling
