It took me a bit to figure out how to get to the rooftop. So to (maybe) save someone from frustration, here's a video on how to get to the compass :D

Up the ladder to the side of the vendor, then stand on the ledge and jump to roof on the left, then hang and work your way round the right side to next ladder Assassins creed style. Then drop down and climb up to the compass.
