its to make the traffic spread out a bit and not clog up your roads. otherwise they get clogged up with the sand & sulfur trucks.

why the squiggle roads?

The roads on the outside have nothing to do with the setup :) The system is a closed one and the trucks only deliver to the storage buldings. The outside roads belong to other building chains.
