The Columbia class is a refit born from the NX program, the NX program had pioneered human deep space travel however it also showed multiple key flaws in design due to it being a test bed for all sorts of technologies, this lead the ship to later be refit in the NX refit program with the biggest change being a newly installed secondary hull

This refit however aged and had been in service for a multitude of years with many ships clearly showing their age, this meant a solution was needed and as part of the mass starfleet modernisation program the NX Refit was completely redone following the new Starfleet design language and letting it once again be at the forefront of new starfleet exploration
