step 0: make sure you have an pcvr ready setup and access to the game (rookie mistake)

step 1: start the game up

step 2: once you load in extend your left hand slightly and make sure its pointing straight

step 3: place your thumb on your left joystick of your left controller

step 4: start moving the thumb to the direction you want your character to move

step 5: once you are done moving rest your thumb on the middle of the joystick so you can easily move whenever you need to
