Acolyte - Text Walkthrough + 100% Achievements + All endings
By 🍒 Lilly (🌸◠‿◠)
ATTENTION: this guide contains LOTS OF SPOILERS!

The whole fun of the game is figuring out yourself all the clues and leads, so I strongly advise you to use it only when it's strictly necessary to do so.

The game contains four possible endings.
There are two mutually exclusive achievements related to the endings, each of them trigged upon choosing a certain path after the branching close to end of the game. Since there is no savegame option, these require two separate playthroughs.
The same branching happens when pursuing a good ending (namely, submitting your evidence only after gathering all pieces), as well as when pursuing a bad ending (submitting your evidence when it's incomplete).
The rest of the achievements are story-related, or related to gathering various collectibles. The guide contains all information needed on how to unlock all of these.

General info
A few general pointers:

- The game works based on events. Usually, some sort of notification is triggered (new email, updating some info, message from Ana, therefore if you read through everything you'll be busy enough and the next event will trigger naturally when you're done with the current task. However, if you want to skip things, you'll have to wait a couple of minutes until the next event pops.

- Whenever you're stuck, you can ask Ana for "help". She will give you a nudge in the right direction, but will not tell you the solution. Try to solve things yourself and check this guide only if you really must, otherwise you will spoil the whole fun of the game.

- On the top right of the screen you can see the active line of investigation, which means that her answers / pointers will be referring to that. Feel free to switch to a different line of investigation by typing "I want to investigate...".

- For the achievement related to filling your contact list, you will have to input the name of the people to Ana so that she adds them to your contact list; some of them are automatically added when you receive an email from them, but others need to be "discovered" this way. The persons you meet (regardless of whether they are automatically added to your contact list or not) are marked with "👨‍🔬" in this guide, so whenever you see this icon, just post the name to Ana.

- Some cosmetic items can be unlocked only after certain steps in your playthrough; the passwords needed to unlock them can be found in the last section of this guide

- After the ending, you can still play and collect the missing cosmetics / contacts / evidence as long as you completed all the tasks before (otherwise some evidence entries will remain locked)

- Before attempting a second playthrough, make sure to:
- copy nanomax_systemConfig from \Acolyte_Data\acolyte_core\user\backup back to \Acolyte_Data
- delete the BAHandshakeBatch file from \Acolyte_Data and from the folder you extracted it to
- optional (for safety): right click the game in your library -> Properties -> Local files -> Verify integrity of game files
Walkthrough (Good Endings) - Part 1
📝Read 'Introduction to Acolytes'
Read the article above the tasks list.

📝 Set up your Nanomail account
Ana > Please setup my Nanomail account
Wait for the timer to complete.

📝 Take the personality test
Ana > Let's take the personality test
Just follow her questions and answer whatever you like.
This will unlock one background (city / country) depending on what you picked.

🏆 //GETTING TO KNOW ME

📝 Learn about your Acolyte
Ask Ana questions to find out more about her.
Examples:
Ana > What is your favorite color?
Ana > What is your favorite food?
Ana > Do you prefer cats or dogs?
Ana > Do you like watching movies?

🏆 //GETTING TO KNOW YOU

👨‍🔬 Jennifer Khan (optional)
👨‍🔬 Grace Tyler (optional)
👨‍🔬 Nicholas Jackson (optional)
👨‍🔬 Roy -> Roy Gilby (mandatory; reference from Nicholas Jackson's email)

Keep talking to her until you see her glitch out.
When this happens (Error 51), don't immediately submit a bug. Instead, talk to Ana first and try to decipher the message she got.
However, submitting a bug now with Error 51 or not doesn't seem to affect the story.

📝 Decipher the message
The binary numbers (made of 0 and 1) represent the ASCII codes for letters.
Copy the text and use https://www.rapidtables.com/convert/number/binary-to-ascii.html to translate it.
Ana > REMEMBER THE AMICUS TRIALS
Allow her to dig more. Continue talking until the update rolls out.

🏆 //DILIGENT

📝 Be vigilant for Error 51
(It autocompletes even if you don't submit a bug report)

👨‍🔬 Robert Ford (mandatory)
👨‍🔬 Shanon Bright (mandatory, her name appears when you inquire about Robert Ford)
👨‍🔬 Dev Prakash (mandatory)

📝 Rate three Acolyte haikus
Ana > Please write a haiku
Repeat two more times. Your rating can be anything (doesn't affect the story).

📝 Find Gwilym Cadwallader's Article

👨‍🔬 Danielle Holdway (optional)

📝 Jailbreak Acolyte app
Go to the Steam folder where the game is installed and delete "nanomax_systemConfig.text". You don't have to close the game in order to do that.

📝 Find the encryption key
Ana > Investigate the encrypted emails
Copy the text from the email that Ana sent you (subject: "Encrypted email found on server") and use https://cryptii.com to decode it.
Decode -> Ciphers: Vigenère cipher -> "amicus" as key
This is an email from Francis Webb addressed to Fiona Nightingale and which contains the new key.
Ana > PINOCCHIO
When she asks about who gains the most out of this:
Ana > Phillip Richards

👨‍🔬 Lisa Harding (optional)
👨‍🔬 Fiona Nightingale (optional)
👨‍🔬 Phillip Richards (optional)
👨‍🔬 John Harris (optional)

For one evidence entry, investigate Terry Mansell's death:
Ana > How did Terry Mansell die?
Ana > Why did Terry Mansell kill himself?

📝 LEAD: the photograph
Ana > I'd like to investigate the photograph
The photo is available in the game's install folder, in Acolyte_Data\acolyte_core\investigation_assets
Check the metadata of the image with https://jimpl.com/ to find the coordinates and location.
51°43'00.2"N 0°08'03.6"E
Ana > Unit 12, Woodside Industrial Estate, Thornwood, Epping CM16 6LJ, United Kingdom

📝 Find a participant of the trials
Check the notes written on the right side of the document from the "FW: Thornwood" email (Lisa and Phil's editing notes):
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uLPDu3f-ZtXcqA3XDU_tvyPVs-WiFTdb/edit

Ana > subjecttw3lve[at]gmail[dot]com

Optional (NOT needed for achievements / story progression)
You receive the email from Grace that tells you to submit a bug with the tracker password.
You can ignore the email, with the result that Grace will be fired.
Or you can submit the password, as requested:
Ana > [submit bug] found4t1on!
Neither of the paths has an effect on the story progression, but you'll get to experience different secondary storylines.
If you don't submit the password, Grace ends up being fired.
If you submit the password, Jennifer Khan is fired.

📝 The harassment campaign
Ana > I'd like to investigate the harassment campaign
The photo is available in the game's install folder, in \Acolyte_Data
Use https://incoherency.co.uk/image-steganography to unhide the image
Ana > Filman Rose - Eyes forever open

📝 Decipher the strange audio
Upload the audio file from Acolyte_Data\acolyte_core\user\nanomax_server\audio to https://academo.org/demos/spectrum-analyzer/ and decode it
Ana > It is the responsibility of scientists to never suppress knowledge
(a quote by Carl Sagan)
Give Ana a few minutes to process the information, until she says "You need to see this" and launches the video.
Reply to Ana and wait for the next event to trigger: the email from Ann-Marie Clarke.

👨‍🔬 Ann-Marie Clarke (mandatory)
👨‍🔬 Daniel Tan (mandatory)

Optional (but needed for achievements)
The email from Ann-Marie Clarke mentions that a blog exists but is not linked to the main page of the company.
However, you can still access it via http://nanomax.technology/blog
There we can find some information about Norman (also mentioned in the email "The Amicus Trials" or in the article "Fiona Nightingale in Cabled"). This is needed for one evidence entry:
Ana > Norman was a nematode
And there's also a person that doesn't appear anywhere else:
👨‍🔬 Michael Carnell (mandatory)

📝 Unlock Abbot's cache
Use https://www.dcode.fr/rot-13-cipher to decipher ABJURER NOWHERE.txt located in Acolyte_Data/acolyte_core/user/nanomax_server/.ba/abbotB_dataCache/
Ana > Goodbyes are hard, but often illuminating.
Allow Ana to do the cross-reference.
Ana > Nanomax history
Wait for her to compile it.
Ana > research blue birds
Search on Twitter for "Ex initio omnia possunt inveniri" (= All things can be found from the beginning; reference from Beatrice's "Farewell" email + Twitter)
The result leads you to https://twitter.com/NanomaxLied with a Pastebin file from Dr. Abbot and a link to her main Twitter account https://twitter.com/babbot76
In this Pastebin file you'll find a clue for the cache password and the fact that she is a fan of Carl Sagan should lead you to the solution (namely, the password).
Password to unlock BAHandshakeBatch.exe: AnnDruyan
Once unlocked, move the file to Acolyte_Data folder. Right after it's moved, Ana will start processing it.
🏆 //HANDSHAKE

IMPORTANT: Branching for GOOD vs BAD endings
At this point, Ana asks you if you're ready to "take this to the next stage" and submit the evidence.
Doing so now will only trigger the bad endings, since the evidence gathered so far is not strong enough (see the next section for more details).
Therefore, if you're going for all achievements or for the good endings, reply:
Ana > no
and continue your investigation.
However, if you redecide, you can trigger the bad endings with:
Ana > ready to submit our case

📝 Abbot's hidden message
This will enable the final branching for NEUROSCIENTIST vs JOURNALIST endings.
By combining the uppercase letters from her tweets from you get: SOMEPLACESOMETHINGINCREDIBLE@GMAILDOTCOM
Ana > someplacesomethingincredible@gmail.com

📝 Investigate supplier invoices
You can find the suppliers list in Acolyte_Data/acolyte_core/user/nanomax_server/.ba/abbotB_dataCache (you will need to enable showing hidden files inside the nanomax_server folder)
Ana > research Kirlian Medical Suppl.
Download the audio file from https://www.dropbox.com/sh/oscnd7vxnbuxyh1/AADToleOoag0DOXV8KnhqTZpa?dl=0 and input it into https://academo.org/demos/spectrum-analyzer/

Ana > The AMICUS trials were vital in discovering our WBE process

📝 Submit your case
Ana > ready to submit our case

IMPORTANT: Branching for NEUROSCIENTIST vs JOURNALIST endings
If you told Ana the secret email address belonging to Dr. Abbot, you can now pick between sending the evidence to her or to Gwilym Cadwallader.
Each of them awards one mutually exclusive achievement.

If you choose Dr. Abbot, you unlock:
🏆 //THE NEUROSCIENTIST

If you choose Gwilym Cadwallader, you unlock:
🏆 //THE JOURNALIST

👨‍🔬 Eric Davenport (email)

In both paths, continue the dialogue with Ana until you get access to some media files.
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/h20dzmx7shrt9i1/AAAzHc1lSigyRfN4OzfrRx-Da?dl=0

Continue until you reach the end.
How to obtain the bad endings
Note: If you're going for 100% achievements, then you should probably follow the playthrough from the above sections, since the achievements require to collect all the evidence anyway.

The bad endings seem to trigger when you are ready to submit your case, but you don't have a solid enough evidence.
Therefore, in order to reach them you'll need to do the following:
- use the walkthrough from the above sections and play all the way through unlocking Dr. Abbot's cache (including that section)
- you can research Dr. Abbot's hidden message - this will enable the final branching (for the NEUROSCIENTIST / JOURNALIST paths); otherwise you'll automatically be forced into the JOURNALIST path.
- do not inquire about Terry or Norman (these will unnecessarily complete entries in your evidence list)
- do not investigate the supplier invoices unless somehow the bad ending does not trigger
- do not ask about the Paragon Program
- when Ana asks you if you're ready to "take this to the next stage" and submit the evidence:
Ana > yes

What follows is a set of emails with the consequences of your decision. This come in very slowly - I am not certain what triggers them but they do seem to appear at rather odd times and after minutes of waiting, or after exchanging a few lines with Ana / changing between various screens in the game.
If you're bored of waiting or nothing happens for a considerable amount of time, you can try unlocking a few more pieces of evidence, for example by investigating the supplier invoices.
Eventually Ana will glitch out and trigger the ending sequence (for me this happened when I had 27 / 34 evidence gathered, including completing the supplier invoices task but not the Paragon Program one).
Achievements that can be obtained anytime
Sometimes during the gameplay, your acolyte is busy gathering data for one of your lines of investigations.
This is the perfect time to go for these achievements, until the next event triggers:

Ana > Can I rename you?
🏆 //(RE)ACQUAINTANCE

Ana > Tell me a joke
🏆 //STAND UP

Ana > Tell me an interesting fact about you

Thanks for the guide! :winter2019happyyul:

So I'm stuck on unlocking Abbot's cache. I can't extract the files and when it asks for a password, I try using AnnDruyan but it says it's the wrong one. Am I doing something wrong? How do I extract the files properly?
freiik 1 Dec, 2022 @ 5:06pm
yes, thank you. I tried messaging them on discord now. I only looked at the guide towards the end to make sure I get all the evidence, but I think it's actually bugged now.

@freiik: "The bottom right corner is "The Future of Nanomax" which according to what I remember, unlocks at the end of the game (not 100% sure).
Based on what you say, it seems that you didn't reach the end yet. There's an exchange of emails which is influenced by what you picked in regards to Grace and the "Neuroscientist vs Journalist" branching, but it's a pretty clear ending based on the contents of these emails. For example, you get a message from DEEP-THOUGHT with a link to some legal items related to Nanomax, and also some messages from Fiona / Lisa / Dr. Abbot.

It's better to ask the devs directly in the forums, since they can tell you exactly how to unlock these, based on the source code. The ending and unlocking Abbot's cache seem to be extremely dependent of performing certain actions in a specific order. The guide has been checked against several playthroughs, but if you did something in a different order, then this could have easily affected your ending.
freiik 30 Nov, 2022 @ 6:32pm
thanks for the guide. Does something actually happen at the end? I feel like the game hasn't *ended* properly yet. (I submitted everything and received some emails). I somehow seem to be stuck at 33/34 evidence and all Ana says is "now we wait", but I have been waiting for a very long time already. What is the last piece of evidence (bottom right corner)? How/When does it unlock?
ONE IN A MILLION 19 Jul, 2022 @ 12:01pm
@Lilly, thanks for answering and yes, i've only beaten the game once with a single ending. so it's probably the other ending im missing.
🍒 Lilly (🌸◠‿◠)  [author] 19 Jul, 2022 @ 11:37am
@ONE IN A MILLION: Hey, can you be more specific? There are 7 hidden achievements and I don't know which one you're referring to. Two of them are related to the 2 possible routes, so if you went for one route only, then you're missing the other route achievement.
Also, all 20 achievements are listed in this guide.
ONE IN A MILLION 19 Jul, 2022 @ 11:20am
do you know anything about the secret achievement? is it the other ending?
MechaShadowV2 5 Jul, 2022 @ 1:36am
@Lilly, oh ok, thank you

@dubesor (2/2): The help function of the Acolyte was very useful a few times when I was really stuck on finding a solution. However it was indeed not always easy to find the right way to ask the questions, considering that she expects a certain wording and some synonyms / phrasing that is just similar to the expected input (and perhaps more natural for the human) does not work. But that's just the limitation of any chat bot, I assume.

In regards to the memory issues - I had that too in one playthrough, but I think this was caused by some tasks not registering properly for some reason (the supplier invoices task was sometimes buggy for me).
