Hellish Sanngriðr - Legit In-Game Strategy
By Sigurd
This is a guide for those who want to beat the game as Sanngriðr on Hellish difficulty WITHOUT cheating or using other people saves.
You can use this as a reference and play whatever the way you want. If you want an easy achievement, just go to another topic and download people save file.

Even though, this guide isn't cheating, I'll present a very cheap strategy that will almost guarantee your success. For some people it might be even considered cheating. But I'm not abusing any bugs and I'm not altering anything, just playing the game as I see fit.

It's still going to be the hardest achievement in the game, so I expect you at least have most of the other achievements (if not already all of them except this one)

TLDR
Get Lion Heart and conclude the level or skip to Asgard Crypts. Then everytime you get hit, instant pause the game and go to main menu. Then continue from there with your extra life replenished (repeat the process everytime you get hit).

Core Strategy
When starting the game, search Huginn's shop and/or open special chests and search for this beauty:

Lion Heart

After this, if you have any keys left save one for Asgard Crypts (Ladder Icon on the map) or you will have to beat the boss room.

Then, it's up to you, but I recommend doing Asgard Crypts so you have a chance of finding better loot than going the usual level 2.

After loading the new level, then you're now playing a different game. This is no longer a hardcore roguelike. It's a checkpoint game with a whole level ahead of each checkpoint.

This is the mindset from now on:
If you get hit, instantly press ESC before you take another hit. You can notice that by the screen shake and also the Lion Heart disappearing.
After that, go to the main menu and select "Continue". The game will start from the beginning of the level you were. So... if you got hit on the last level, you're going to continue from there.
So basically, now you have 1 less item slot in exchance for a checkpoint game.
Best Items

Spacewalker (AKA Odr mode)
Description: Take to flight
Just the best survivability item you can get.

Adventurer's Fedora
Description: Rotate ability slots
You can customize your build so much with this (discard it later on).

Seiðr's Blessing
Description: Enemies die over time
This will help a lot by passively killing everything while you focus on staying alive.

Rhythmic Chaos Boots
Description: Strike to the beat
Passively deals a lot of damage to everything near you. One at a time.

Every item here will help you focus on survival. Except for the hat. So pay attention if you find them on your way.

Note: any item related to health/armor/shield will be completely useless.
Best Abilities

Valkyrie's Veil
Description: Negate first enemy attack.
Cooldown: 10 kills.
This is the best spell period. Your run is in a very good place if you find this.

Frost Bolt
Description: Freeze enemies for a time.
Cooldown: 1 beat.
Most bosses will be a piece of cake with this. Spam as much as you need.

Celestial Wave
Damage all enemies.
Cooldown: 8 beats.
Not as good as above, but will help cleaning wasps/bats/small enemies.

Note: If you're low on keys, don't bother getting Ultimate abilities. You can see a book before opening the library door.

***IMPORTANT: Don't get the Undying Strength Spell. It will not work on Sanngriðr.***
Hints On Guns
  • Personal choice matters more than raw power.

  • Avoid getting pistols and shotguns as their range are usually low.

  • Try getting guns that can do AoE (Area of effect) damage to help killing Guardians (shield enemies).

  • Infinite Ammo guns are good, they help you focus more on dodge and less on reload.

  • The small orange glow chests found on "secret" areas have a good chance of containing guns.

  • Replace the initial pistol ASAP for something you find on a chest.

  • Don't waste gold on a gun at the beginning, unless it's a extremely good gun for you. Try saving gold to use on Asgard Crypts stats boost.

Final Thoughts
Feel free to share your victory if this guide helps you. I hope more people are able to get their hands on the trophy and feel the joy of accomplishment.

Some tips:
  • Don't overdo yourself, if you're having a bad run and could only get the Lion Heart being useful. Start over again.
  • Make the most of the knowledge you will get from the rooms so you can beat them easier.
  • You WILL get hit (probably) so don't be angry, just be happy that you didn't lose too much progress.
  • In case you want, you can backup your save, but I feel that is cheating. So I wouldn't recommend.
  • Don't go greedy on the last boss. I lost my Lion Heart during the final hit points and almost shat in my pants thinking I would lose the whole run. If you lose your Lion Heart, pause and think if it's better to reload.
  • You don't need to complete the challenge room for the boss' door to open.
Worst enemies IMO so becareful with them:
  • Guardian
  • Fly
  • Jötunn Guard
  • Vargr
  • Fast Fly
  • Bat

I wish you luck!

Please don't apologize! It's a strategy that others found out by themselves, and is very useful! I do have to agree, sometimes this game is just unfair and not everyone wants to do that.

Sorry to take out of the joy for beating the game as devs would expect. In my opinion that's more on devs fault for bad RNG balancing. This guide is useful for a lot of people who still want to complete the game and don't want to download saves or cheat engine. A lot of people don't want to invest so much time and feel cheated because someone got good RNG and beat the game while they didn't. You could be a ultra pro that don't get hit and beat the game using your kitchen's spoon, but that's unrealistic expectation. Specially if you think people would take that seriously a game that uses most unreal free marketplace assets. I love the game, but there is a limit to that.

I guess it's slightly less cheesy than downloading saves? It's still cheesed as hell though, lmao.

Funnily enough, I already figured this out myself and is usually my prime strat. I get that it's cheesy as shit, but so is valkerie's veil (something i can NEVER get on odr/sanngior runs) and i usually die to random bullshit anyways lol

Bruh just cope, get better, get lucky and eventually and you will get it

Fair enough. Yeah, it'd be nice if it were patched out, would make the achievement more equal between people who have differing views on its legitimacy. Rather doubt it will, though.

As I said it can be considered cheating by some people, you are one of them. Yet I give you some guidance on what to look for when playing on this difficulty, you are welcome to use this guide as you see fit. If the devs fix this issue, that would be cool.

Savescumming is still pretty much cheating. Yeah, there's an in-game exploit to allow savescumming without having to back up save files... but it's still savescumming. You're reloading a save to undo a mistake which would otherwise normally be unrecoverable.
