Add -novirtual to the launch options. Launch options can be found by right clicking on Grid in your library and clicking on Properties. Under the General tab click "Set Launch Options...". Type
-novirtual into the resulting text box.

I had the same problem. Going to C:\Program Files (x86)\Creative\OpenAL and re-running oalinst.exe fixed it.

Any idea how to get it running it it isn't steam-powered so to speak?

Care to expand on that? I've been trying to get it running for a little while now with no success. Any help would be appreciated
