How to upgrade to the 1.06 patch

A short simple guide on how to upgrade to the unofficial 1.06 patch that some community-made maps and campaigns require.
No savefile is affected but doing a backup is always recommended when modifying games.

Please note: Saved games from older versions (e.g. 1.05) work in the 1.06 update.
But you can't play 1.06 save files in older versions!!! (downgrade)

Steam version: Replace RT3.exe

The unofficial patch installer says it's "not a version that can be patched" if you have the Steam version.
Here's how to fix that by replacing the file that starts the game with another and patching that file.

1. Download a new RT3.exe file

Download link and information: http://hawkdawg.com/rrt/rrt3/no_cd/no_cd_patch.htm

2. Open RT3 installation folder

(default C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Railroad Tycoon 3)
Tip: Go to Steam -> Libary -> Right-Click Railroad Tycoon 3 -> Properties... -> Local files -> Browse...

3. Replace the RT3.exe with the file you just downloaded

Install the unofficial 1.06 patch

If you already have a patchable version of the game or you've done the first chapter (Steam version: Replace RT3.exe), then you just have to download the unofficial patch and update the game with their easy to use the installer.

No savefile is affected but doing a backup is always recommended.

1. Download the 1.06 patch from hawkdawg.com

Link to download: http://hawkdawg.com/rrt/rrt3/rrt3_main.php

2. Scroll down to "The unofficial 1.06 patch" and press "from this link"

3. Open the rt3_1.06.zip file and launch setup06.exe

4. Follow the steps in the installer
Tip. When asked what components you want to be installed, only install "Railroad Tycoon 3 patch 1.06" if you don't want the patches for buildings/locomotives and new locomotives

5. Start the game and check the left corner to see if you got the new version

I did get it to update! but the link to make it 1080 or higher doesn't seem to be working

@NinjaSpartan011 you're not able to update to version 1.06?

For me it worked but heard it helped to use the VistaFix patch and use the 106 files

I can't get it to work now. I haven't updated to windows 11 I'm still on 10. I got it to work on my old build.

Thanks Nubbie. I think I already tried that. The closest I ever got to the game running was that it opened a tiny window that would not expand, and I could hear the music from the game playing. But there was no UI and nothing worked. I definitely already tried the vgvoodoo approach but it wouldn't work for me.

Currently I can't play RT3 on Windows 10 - I've tried all the guides out there and none of them work for me. Is this still a recommended guide, or is it toast?

Oh when I go on it with my phone rn it seems to want to automatically download it. No idea what it wanted to do on desktop lmfao, guess I'll know soon if I've got ransomware
Tomorrow I'll see if I can apply the patch, the other downloads through Mediafire worked for me

@blazikem Not 100% sure what you mean by "generate a new key"?
However, you can see on the Mediafire page down in the right corner that it says "VirusTotal scan 0/57 engines detected this file"

I can't really find an alternative site as it comes from http://hawkdawg.com/rrt/rrt3/rrt3_main.php#unofficial106 - however, this patch isn't necessary - if you don't want to play some custom maps made for it that is

When attempting to download the 1.06 patch from MediaFire, it keeps trying to generate a new key? Hasn't downloaded anything.
Either way very cautious when doing any of this. I know they're probably not gonna be viruses unless I click something stupid but I am still scared af doing this lmao
