Overview
As of patch v1.245 v1.343, there are a total of 23 84 achievements. Patch v1.3 introduced 61 new achievements on top of many other gameplay changes, which facilitates a revisting and general overhaul of this guide.

This guide will be categorized into the following sections:
  • Progression Achievements
  • Rank Achievements
  • Shotgun Achievements
  • Strategic Achievements
  • Three-Card Achievements
Progression Achievements
There are a total of 4 achievements in this section.

Full Set
Have 10 black cards
Completing Stage 10 will get you this achievement.

Complete
Kill the White King
Completing Throne Mode (12 stages + boss) will get you this achievement.

Avenged/Exorcised
Kill The Black Bishop/Kill The Red Book
These two achievements kind of go hand-in-hand, and has already been covered by another guide, so just check that one out:
https://gtm.steamproxy.vip/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2809998698
To summarize, you have to beat the standard boss (White King) while holding The Red Book and Theocracy cards and keeping exactly one bishop alive. As of patch v1.25, you are able to get Avenged and Exorcised achievements on the same run if you kill the red book, whereas prior to this, you could only get one at a time.
Rank Achievements
(Introduced in patch v1.3)

The rank system in Throne Mode replaces the previous difficulty settings (Easy/Normal/Hard/Very Hard/King) with a more gradual difficulty curve. Each rank adds an additional modifier to the game making it more difficult, with later ranks including all the modifiers of the previous ranks. Beating each rank grants its own achievement and unlocks the next rank (a total of 15 ranks/achievements). The ranks are as follows:

There aren't really any rank-specific tips; beyond consulting the standard gameplay guides, you will just have to become very familiar with the game mechanics as you slowly climb the ranks. Some generic considerations include:
  • Thinking about how the AI will move its pieces based on position, and repositioning accordingly to minimize the amount of time you are in check
    • As long as a piece can make a valid move, even if it cannot put you in check, it has to make it. Use this to your advantage with regards to white pieces blocking other white pieces
  • Understanding shot angles and spreads, and what are considered safe vs unsafe shots
  • "Good" vs "bad" cards, both black and white (there is a degree of subjectivity here, but you will get a feel for what works and what doesn't)
  • Ammo management
  • Balancing when to clear pieces around you vs. when to make a beeline for the king
  • Getting VERY familiar with how the Folly Shield system works, including when and when it won't activate even when your action would still be considered suicidal (the most well-known ones being destroying a piece that was blocking line of sight from another piece, or failing to kill pieces on diagonals where some of your shots end up missing)
  • Understanding that higher ranks, on average, will take more turns to complete any particular stage due to inflated piece count/health, making white backup cards more dangerous
Good luck!
Shotgun Achievements
(Introduced in patch v1.3)

There are a total of five shotguns, each with their own achievement for beating throne mode with them. You will probably have the easiest time doing these at Rank 1, although you may probably unlock these naturally climbing the ranks while testing out different shotguns anyways. The stats and unlock methods of each of the shotguns are listed in the table below; I have also included a "Focus Cards to Unlock" column to give you an idea on what black cards to aim for to unlock each shotgun.

Strategic Achievements (1/2)
(Introduced in patch v1.3)

Achievements that require a bit more nuance beyond standard progression or card collection. You do not have to win the run to get these unless explicitly stated. It is also recommended to do these on Rank 1 for the easiest time unless stated otherwise (all these tips are assuming Throne Mode; it may potentially be easier to get some of these in Endless/Chase mode, but I have no experience with them). I will also list cards that are probably mandatory for getting certain achievements. This list is sorted in alphabetical order (as are the rest of the tables).

There are a total of 39 achievements in this section.

A Mighty Fortress
Have 6+ rooks on the board at one time
Suggested Rank: 3
Cards of interest: Ammunition Depot/Cathedral/Court of the King/Lookout Tower/Ramparts/Ruins (anything that adds rooks)

Rank 3 starts you off with 1 rook, and there are 6 cards that add rooks, so it's only a matter of finding at least 5 of them without dying, which is easier said than done.

Alternatively, while you should still aim for any rook adding cards, remember that pawns can potentially promote into rooks as well, easing the card requirements (you can even aim for pawn adding cards to facilitate the process). Just make sure not to get yourself boxed in while you're amassing enemy rooks, since you need to survive long enough to see 6 of them on the board.

A Velvet Glove
Finish a floor without killing any non-leader piece
Related Achievements: Merciful Ruler

A harder version of the Merciful Ruler achievement. Still best done on Stage 1, where you can more easily route around every non-king piece.

Blitz
Beat Throne mode in less than 5 minutes
Related Achievements: Bullet

A sub-five minute run should be pretty standard in Rank 1 once you get comfortable enough with the game. See the Bullet achievement for more information on speeding up your gameplay, although you typically won't need those tips specifically for the Blitz achievement.

Bullet
Beat Throne mode in less than 2 minutes
Related Achievements: Blitz

You should have a good grasp of the game, including knowing cards from their icons (hovering over cards to see their effects takes extra time, after all). Remember that the time is only counting while you have control of the game; use the animation times of pieces moving and cards flipping to plan your next actions.

Two other personal recommendations I have:
  • Go to Settings and set your Folly Shield count to 3. Unless you are extremely good at the game, you will probably be spam-clicking to perform actions faster, and can quickly burn two folly shields performing a bad action, leaving you with a backup for another mistake. Otherwise, deliberately burning through folly shields should only take a fraction of a second.
  • If you can help it, try not to pick cards that drastically alter standard gameplay mechanics in a way that requires additional thought. Taking an extra half-second every other turn to figure out some non-conventional move can easily push you over the two-minute threshold.

Deleted
Finish a floor by turn 6
Cards of interest: Holy Gunpowder/High Focus/Piercing Truth/Sacred Crown/Unjust Decree/Welcome Gift

Amass a decent amount of firepower, get a rook or queen soul prior to finishing a stage, then if the board state is aligned in a way that you are on the same file/column as the enemy king upon starting a stage, use the rook/queen soul to get as close as possible and shoot directly for the king. Assuming base shotgun chamber size, you will have a maximum of four shots to down the king, although this number will go down based on other pieces threatening you (usually pawns), or up depending on if you have Sacred Crown and/or Unjust Decree.

Gluttony
Have 20+ ammo
Cards of interest: Church Organ/Ermine Belt/Force-Feeding/Kingdom Wealth/Majestic Censer/Small Fry Harvest
Shotgun of interest: Richard III (9 max ammo)

If you start with the Richard III shotgun, you will need 11 more ammo for this achievement. The above cards add up to a total of 15 max ammo, but for the easiest time, you will basically want to aim for Kingdom Wealth (+6) and two Ermine Belts (+3 x 2). You can sub one Ermine Belt for Church Organ or two of the other cards if you can't find it, but basically just aim for all ammo granting cards.

Hasta La Vista Baby
Kill an Iron Queen
Cards of interest: Iron Maiden (W)/King's Shoulders (B)

You will need both of the noted cards. Allow a queen move into your immediate range, then pick it up and throw it off the board.

Hope This Hits
Have an arc of 120 or higher
Cards of interest: Blunderbuss (B)/Karma (W)/Witch's Curse (W)
Shotgun of interest: Ramesses II (65° spread)/Richard III (75° spread)

Choose one of the noted shotguns and get either two Blunderbusses or Blunderbuss and Karma while moving onto a black square (30° spread each). You can also start with Solomon/Makeda and add on Witch's Curse (10° spread), but unless you happened to luck upon it, why go through the extra unnecessary layer of RNG?

If you have gotten up to Rank 12 without getting this achievement somehow, then the extra 25° spread in this rank means you only need one Blunderbuss or Karma.

How It Should Be
Have 2 knights, 2 rooks, 2 bishops, 1 queen, 1 king, and 8 pawns on the enemy field
Cards of interest: Too many to list

Fortunately, you don't need to emulate a standard chess starting position. Standard strategy is to just keep aiming for piece-adding cards until you hit the minimum numbers for all piece types, then specifically kill whatever is excess to get the achievement. If you have a lot of pawns and not enough of the other pieces, you can mess around with pawn promotions if you're feeling lucky and/or desperate.

Humiliation
Kill the white king by hopping on him
Cards of interest: Taunting Hop

Since Taunting Hop gives you a free turn after you use it, it's simple to hop + move away, wait for the white king to get next to you, then repeat until he's dead. Just make sure to clear any riff-raff that might stop you from your pogo time.

Incarnation
Finish a floor moving only with souls

This can somewhat be related to the Deleted achievement, but you might be able to also get this without moving at all and letting the pieces come to you (assuming you don't run out of ammo first). Otherwise, just follow what I wrote for the Deleted achievement but without the turn restriction.

Iron King
Beat Throne mode without using a folly shield
It is recommended to set your Folly Shield count to 0 prior to attempting this challenge, since it is very easy to accidentally trigger one, including situations where you know you can get a kill but the shield will still trigger.

Of course, this means you will have to be more careful/observative with each move, since one bad click will end your run. I like to see this achievement as the opposite of Bullet in that every click matters here.

Lifeguard
Push a piece out of the moat
Cards of interest: Rightful Curtsy/The Moat
Shotgun of interest: Ramesses II (50% knockback chance)

If you start with Ramesses II, then you won't need Rightful Curtsy unless your knockback RNG is absolutely horrible. The rest of this should be pretty straightforward.
Strategic Achievements (2/2)
Like Father Like Son
Kill the white king by throwing his heir at him
Cards of interest: King's Shoulders (B)/The Secret Heir (W)

Locate the heir, get the king to three or less HP, then clear enough space such that you have clear line of sight to yeet the heir at the king. Remember that you only get one piece throw attempt per stage, so make it count.

Merciful Ruler
Finish a floor without killing any pawn
Related Achievements: A Velvet Glove

Best done on Stage 1, where you can simply route around the pawns and target the other pieces.

Mmmmh Delicieux!
Get eaten by the white king

Die to the white king in the boss stage by moving or staying in his attack range. Hope you're okay with deliberately throwing a full run, since you usually have to intentionally let yourself die to him.

Mortal Peril
Be threatened by 4 pieces at once
You will probably get this achievement naturally while playing on higher ranks. Otherwise, you will have to think about how all the pieces move a little more carefully and position yourself such that multiple pieces can get within check range at the same time. You will also probably die shortly after.

Mr President!
Make a rook save the king from a flying piece
Cards of interest: Castle (W)/King's Shoulders (B)

Get the rook nearest to the king down to 3 or less HP, then chuck a piece at the king.

Nine Lives
Activating black mist 9 times
Cards of interest: Black Mist

You're going to need to luck into a Black Mist early on (or two during mid-game), and make sure to trigger it every stage. Unless you want to really test your luck, if you're aiming for this achievement specifically, it's best to restart if you don't get Black Mist by the end of Stage 4, since you won't have enough stages to trigger it enough times.

Or you can try endless mode, I guess...

OH NO!
Get killed by your own grenade
Cards of interest: Kingly Alms
Related Achievements: Suicide Pact

Throwing a grenade one space away guarantees no bounce, as well as your timely demise. Unless you got this accidentally (very possible due to bounce mechanics at mid-range), might as well try to get the Suicide Pact achievement at the same time, as it's impossible to get that one without getting this one.

Projectile Dysfunction
Have more ammo in your clip than in your max reserves
Cards of interest: Cardinal (W)/Church Organ(W)/Entitle (W)/Extra Barrel(B)/Force Feed (B)/Imperial Shot Put (B)/Shortage (W)
Shotgun of interest: Victoria (2 chamber size to max ammo differential)/Ramesses II (3 chamber size to max ammo differential)

I don't think Force-Feed (B) works with this achievement even though you can shove up to 7 ammo in your clip (correct me if I'm wrong) (based on a below comment, looks like you can use Force Feed):,

Originally posted by Sans Cipher:
Hello hi, I would like to note that you CAN force-feed into projectile dysfunction! Did it on Victoria, fed 4 times (5 in shotgun, 4 max reserve), got the achievement

Alternatively, you can rely on getting variations of chamber size increases/max ammo decreases. Note that while Victoria has a smaller chamber size to max ammo differential, you cannot get Shortage at base max ammo level, since that would put your max ammo amount to 0 (which is not allowed).

She Is Everywhere
Have 5+ queens on the board at one time
Cards of interest: Genderqueer (W)/Golden Aging (B)/Iron Maiden (W)/King's Mistress (W)/Presbyopia (B)/Succubus (W)

The above cards plus the Homecoming queen only adds up to 5, so it's mandatory to rely on pawn to queen promotions (or Endless mode I guess...) to get to 5+. It might be better RNG-wise to rely more on the multi-pawn-to-queen promotion chances, since it's going to be pretty hard to survive with multiple queens on the board for an extended period of time.

Square Allegiance
Finish a floor without moving to a white tile
Best done on Stage 1, where the only enemy bishop starts on a white square, and thus cannot target you if you are trying for this achievement.

Suicide Pact
Destroy the last leader and the black king with a grenade
Cards of interest: Kingly Alms
Related Achievements: OH NO!

Throwing a grenade one space away guarantees no bounce, as well as your timely demise. Grenades deal 2 damage, so get the enemy king (or final theocracy bishop if you'd rather roll that way...) down to 2 or less HP, get them within two spaces of you, then plop down a nice juicy grenade between the two of you for some nice mutually assured destruction. Oh, and make sure you don't have a Black Mist available when you do this.

Underpressure Ammo
Have a firepower equal to 1
Cards of interest: Bushido (B)/Karma (W)/Unjust Decree (B)/Witch's Curse (W)
Shotgun of interest: Makeda/Richard III (3 firepower)

Each of the noted cards reduces firepower by 1 (assuming you are on a white square for Karma or haven't killed a queen for Witch's Curse), so just find two of these cards.

Wait You Can Do That!?
Reload your shotgun without moving
Click on the shotgun image on the top left (or press the Space button) while your chamber is missing ammo and you have available ammo reserves.

Widow
Beat Throne mode without killing a queen
Cards of interest: Golden Aging (B)/Iron Maiden (W)/Presbyopia (B)/Undercover Mission (B)

Main strategies for this can include debuffing the queen to make it less of a threat, and/or rushing Iron Maiden so you don't have to worry about accidentally killing one. I put Undercover Mission on the list under the assumption that you can rush the waypoint and choose to deactivate Homecoming each time, removing the queen. I don't think this counts as killing the queen, but if anyone wants to try this strategy and report back to me on whether or not they get the achievement... (Confirmed by freezframe and zyffe to be a valid strategy)

You Shall Not Pass
Beat Throne mode without letting a pawn promote
Pretty straightforward. Make sure to either kill all the pawns, or know that you can blitz down the king before any pawn can reach your end of the board. Be wary of cards that make pawns move to your side more quickly, or the Undead Armies card, which can spawn pawns one space away from promotion.

Your Wife My Wife
Grab the queen and carry her to the square you start the round on
Cards of interest: King's Shoulders

Let a queen get within your grabbing range, and you probably know the rest.
Three-Card Achievements (1/2)
Most of these achievements are extremely straightforward, but the main point of this post was to present them in a way that it would be easier to keep track of what specific cards to hunt for. Below are achievement tables listing the three cards required for each, as well as separate black and white card tables and any associated achievements for ease of searching.

(B) stands for Black Card, and (W) stands for White Card; achievements can require either type, or a mixture of both. I have also bolded achievements that were added as part of the v1.3 update in case there are some more seasoned players that got all the older achievements already. Note that certain white cards can only appear if the enemy currently has the appropriate pieces to accommodate it, (ex. you cannot get a white card that removes bishops if they do not have any bishops). If certain pieces are required, consider playing at higher ranks (within comfort) to start you off with more pieces and slightly reduce the RNG requirements. The important rank thresholds for this are:
  • Rank 2: 4 -> 6 pawns
  • Rank 3: 0 -> 1 rook
  • Rank 5: 1 -> 2 knights
  • Rank 8: 1 -> 2 bishops
There are some other situations that prevent certain cards from showing up (see Appendix A: Card Information), so make sure to keep these in mind as well when hunting for achievements. May the RNG gods ever be in your favour.

There are a total of 31 achievements in this section.

Here is a compilation of all the black and white cards in the game, including their effect, prerequisites, and other notes such as if the card blocks other cards from "spawning", or just general info I find useful. I cannot guarantee this will remain up-to-date, as stuff can change from patch to patch; this will be in line with whatever the title says it is updated to.

    • Does not bounce if aimed one square away
    • Bounces once if aimed 2-4 squares away
    • Bounces twice if aimed 5+ squares away
  • Can bounce off the board's edge or into a moat, effectively wasting it
King's Shoulders
Once per floor, drag a nearby piece on your king and throw it in any direction
Some information on King's Shoulders:
  • Dragging a piece on your king picks it up and temporarily removes it from play
  • You can move around as standard while holding onto the piece, but cannot shoot until you throw it (similar mechanics to shooting your shotgun with respect to aiming)
  • If thrown at another piece, deals 3 damage to both pieces
  • If the thrown piece survives, it is stunned and cannot immediately attack you after landing
    • If the target piece survives, it lands in a random (?) open spot next to it
    • Otherwise, it will land on the spot where the target piece used to be
  • If thrown off the board, it is effectively killed/removed from play

For shotgun unlocks do you literally just need to achieve the requirements during a run, or do you need to WIN a run with those requirements?

Does the extra shell that Force-Feeding lets you chamber count toward the 4-shell capacity required to unlock a shotgun?

suicide pact can be done with black mist, I got the achievement even with two black mists ready to revive me.

@Cartridge I also was having trouble getting King's Shoulders, and only got it having Patience as my first black card, so yeah it's hard
Cartridge 17 Nov, 2024 @ 4:08pm
is there something that now causes King's Shoulders to be unavailable? I tried choosing it with Patience but it wasn't there, and I can't be sure if having Witch's Curse on the other end was part of it. it also totally kept me from having the cards needed for new Achievement, Detention, so I'm rather mad about this development.

I think I figured out how to get the Marital Peace achievement as of the most recent update.
It requires you to kill the White Boss while you have an iron maiden queen on the board. I think you also need the Succubus card since I had it in the deck at the time, but not 100% certain.

Doing this will cause the Iron Queen to turn into The Blight upon being struck by the ending lightning.

Great guide, cheers!

For Mighty Fortress, if you don't get enough rook cards, I recommend getting pawn cards (especially Conscription) + Bloodless Coup + Bushido. If you get good blade damage, you can just hop around the board, hiding between pawns, and stabbing any non-rook pieces. This is also a good strategy for She Is Everywhere (replacing rooks with queens, of course).

I completed Throne Mode with zero Folly Shields and somehow didn't get Iron King.
I feel as if it's because I started a game with them on, turned them off in the same game, died, and then started a new game right away instead of going to the Title Screen. Either way, it was really weird.

I created a checklist in google sheet to confirm achievement completion.Since I found the Three-Cards achievements particularly difficult to confirm... Here is link https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1uF_WX3exyohAn96_sQiJVmp3OLE0iOb61HPH6VFLkCI/edit?usp=sharing

For the Like Father, Like Son achievement, it might be worth mentioning that it doesn't work on the final White King. I just tried getting this achievement, but my only chance to do so was on the final round. I got the giant King to 3 hp, picked up the secret heir, threw it at the giant king, he they both died, and then I got no achievement. :steamsad:
