Beasts of Maravilla Island is not a particularly hard game to beat, or to 100% even. That said, after beating it I found out that there were a couple of things to keep in mind when playing that would have come in handy during my first playthrough, so I'm putting it all together in this 100% Competition Guide.
A couple of notes before starting:

• This guide is divided in multiple sections to make it easy to find what you are looking for. It's divided into the Missable Achievements, Story Achievements, and biome specific Achievements.
  
• If anything I would recommend that you at least read the Missable Achievements sections, specially for a bug warning.
  
• Animals in the game tend to react to your whistle. This will make them do poses or look at the camera. This is just a tip to help you get better or more interesting photos.
  
• Use a controller if possible. The games keeps the mouse on the screen constantly when playing with mouse and keyboard.
  
• Most animals can be in more than one area. This guide only suggests either good places for a photo or the earlier point in the route where you find them.

With that out of the way, lets go on with the guide.

There aren't any true missable achievements in the game, as you can just use the chapter select to go back and get everything you missed.
However, there are a couple of achievements that you won't get unless you are actively trying to complete them.


To get the Good Dog! achievement you just have to play with the Otterdile using the stone (the same way you get the jumping photo) 20 times. You probably won't get this by accident, unless you really enjoy throwing that rock.

Invasive Species explains itself.


You can technically miss this, as you do not need to complete them to get the all the pictures in the game, but it would be rare as you will come across them naturally.

• For Family Gathering just find the 3 spots with empty nests (the ones around the tree stumps) and whistle. You need at least one for the Natural Shot behavior.
  
• As for Acapella Concert just finish playing the Simon says with the singing binkeys until all of them appear. You can get the photo with just one but, why would you settle just for that?

You can get this after finishing the game using chapter select if you miss any. Three of the four pictures are actually missable.

• You get two chances at the first one. Right after the binkey opens the path and you cross the river, it will be standing after the turn. If you get to close it will disappear.
  
• The second option is going to the top of the temple and taking a picture when you see it in the distance. As soon as you get down form the temple it will disappear again.

NOTE: This part was bugged for me and it didn't disapeared either time. I took some nice pictures but it may be an indicator or a broken run (see the Griffin section next).

• In the Glimmering River, after you get help from the Otterdile to open the first flower and climb to the next area, don't move. You can see it at the other end of the map near the waterfall. You can now zoom with your camera and take the picture. As soon as you jump onto the lily pads in front of you, it will walk trough the waterfall and you will have to start the level again.

• When going up the road to the top of the mountain, before the second turn you are going to see it standing there. Take its picture before crossing the turn, as it will disappear after the cut scene, making you redo the level.

The last photo you get after finishing the game (before picking up the note book). It will just be standing there but won't disappear.


NOTE: This is not as much of a missable achievement, as it is a bugged one.
Taking the pictures is not hard, but if after taking them your mission does not complete, you might have to restart from 0 to get it to work. As far as I'm aware, it might break if you decide to save and exit the game during the Painted Plateau. So maybe try to finish the game in one sitting, it's just about 3 hours long.

On with the photos:



You can get all the photos except for the ROARING one as soon as you begin the fight at the temple.

• When it is standing and flying you can get the Natural Shot and Flying behaviors.
  
• When charging for a jump, your reticle will glow purple and you'll get the Ruffling Feathers behavior.
  
• If you wistle you can force it to make the Gusting behavior.

As for the Roaring one, you can get it just before finishing the game, same as the Island Spirit one.

For the purposes of simplicity, I'm going to divide the map in different areas to help with directions. This are:

• First Ground Level - The begging area of the jungle.
  
• Tree Tops - Right after you climb the big illuminated plant.
  
• Second Ground Level - At the singing puzzle, go right and follow the path until you are at ground level again.

The Binkeys are the main animal for the area, and you will get most of the photos along the path. Here is a simplified list of where to get them.

• Tail-Twining: On the main path where you first spot them, will be your first picture.
  
• Gliding: At the tree tops you can snap them mid air anywhere.
  
• Natural Shot: At the nests where you whistle to call them.
  
• Singing: Play Simon Says with them at the place the game tells you.
  
• Courtship Dance: At the Second Ground Level, you will have to solve a light puzzle to get them to react.

• Round Ruby Beetle: First animal you'll encounter, in the tree as soon as you get to the island.
  
• Humming Malachite Grasshopper: At the base of the big plant before the tree tops.
  
• Moonstone Longhorn Beetle: Where you found the grasshoppers, go to the left area.
  
• Bunny-Eared Emerald Leaf Bug: Tree tops, on the trees leading to the singing monkeys.
  
• Topaz Rhino Beetle: Right before and right after the singing monkeys.
  
• Giant Agate Snail: Second Ground Level, you use them for the puzzle.

• Toucan Beak Butterly and Prism-Winged Butterfly: At the begging pretty much everywhere.
  
• Pale Blue Finwing: After the Giant Jungle Lotus, on top of a Maravillan Angel Trumpet.
  
• Emerald Birdwing Butterfly: At the area to the left of the big illuminated plant, under the tree.
  
• Orchid Buckeye: Flying around the tree tops, there are large groups on the trees near the singing monkeys.
  
• Pink Painted Swallowtail: After finishing the snail puzzle, go back to the area where to got the fruit and one of the monkeys will open the path. The butterflies are right after crossing the river.

• Tangerine Shawled Finch: Just as you enter the island with the Ruby Beetles.
  
• Maravillan Mango Kakapo: You will have to whistle to one at the begging of the main path. There is a larger group in the second ground level area.
  
• Banana Peel Toucan: Just as you get to the tree tops, on a tree in front of you.
  
• Hibiscus-Plumed Dove: Treetops, behind the area of the Banana Toucans.
  
• Vine-Tailed Tanager: Area right before the singing monkeys.
  
• Leaf-Winged Parrot: On the path after the singing monkeys near the second ground level.

The easiest place to get all the flora photos is the first ground area, at the base of the big illuminated plant. Just stay there until you get all the pictures.
Note: The Lamp Lily and Jungle Lotus are unmissable as you need them to advance thought the area.

This second area of the game is pretty linear in terms of the path, so it should be pretty easy to find the way around. Let's separate it in areas:

• Starting area: Everything before the first Otterdile encounter.
  
• Otterdile Lake: Area where you find the Otterdile and play with it.
  
• Hide and Seek area: Right after the pond where you play.
  
• Waterfall area: Just after going up the flower from the hide and seek area.
  
• Cave: After going through the waterfall.

This are all pretty easy to get, as you can get a different photo every time you encounter it. This are:

• Natural Shot: Any time it's staying still.
  
• Flipping: Play with it using the stone.
  
• Camouflage: You'll naturally get this during the hide and seek game.
  
• Spitting: Any time you whistle to it.
  
• Glowing: Any time after the glowing fruit puzzle. Best shot is inside the cave area.

• Amanita Rain Frog: After the cut-scene with the glowing frog, go right. It will be on a rock.
  
• Orange Pore Bullfrog: Next to the Amanita Rain Frog. There are more at the waterfall area.
  
• Night-Light Tree Frog: After the cut-scene, follow it across the river.
  
• Neon Dart Frog and Violet-Capped Toad: Both are at the river right after the hide and seek area.
  
• Inky Bearded Toad: At the waterfall area. Go to the area left from the glowing fruit for a large group.

• Aura Quartz Firefly: You can snap them right after getting covered in pollen, or at the glowing fruit puzzle in the waterfall area.
  
• Aquamarine Dragonfly: They fly around. The easiest one is on a tree right before the first Otterdile encounter.
  
• Rhodonite Spider: After the frog cut-scene, cross the river and go left.
  
• Larimar Pondskater: Any pond. Easiest one is where you play catch with the Otterdile.
  
• Black Opal Ladybug: Waterfall area. There are a lot to the left of the glowing fruit tree.
  
• Purple Agate Snail: You will use them at the glowing fruit area.

• Leaf-Nosed Luna Bat: Around the starting area near the frogs.
  
• Hawkmoth Fruitbat, Giant Sunset Bat and Luminous Hog-Nosed Bat: Flying around the hide and seek area. You can find multiple of them under the trees.
  
• Wooly Ghost Bat: Waterfall area. There is one sleeping to the left of the glowing fruit tree.
  
• Celestial Winged Bat: Only at the cave area.

The plants are pretty much everywhere, so just make sure to check the ponds and around the trees. One thing to note is that you will get the Twinkling Nightlight Lily automatically, and, once you take a picture of a mushroom, every other mushroom will be the same, regardless of it's size or color. So save yourself some time and stop after one.

Probably the easiest area as it is a straight path. Almost all the animals and plants are found at the river area. As for the Griffin photos, make sure to check the Missable Achievements section for the warning. The areas are:

• Cave: Right where you start.
  
• River: As soon as you exit the cave.
  
• Dried Area: The point in which the plants start to look dried.
  
• Path to the Top: Where you follow after the griffin.
  
• The Top: The top.

The reptiles are all pretty easy to spot. They are all at the river area, EXCEPT for the Silver Spiked Carbon Lizard, which is on the path to the top. The rest are on the rocks and trees around the river. Also, there are more turtles at the top.

• Amathyst-Backed Glowworm and Rose Quartz Isopod: In the beggining cave.
  
• Sugilite Conehead Mantis: They are on the Island Lupines. The first is to the right as you exit the cave.
  
• Mica Mirror Spider and Blue-Shelled Citrine Beetle: On the river rocks.
  
• Mordenite Bumble Bee: They have beehives on the trees around the river, and fly from flower to flower.

Just like the reptiles, this are all pretty easy to spot. You can get a picture of almost all of them in the dried area. They will land on the trees and rock if you wait. The only ones not there are the Armored Axe-Beaked Hawk and the Orange-Tipped Horned Kite, which can only be found on the path to the top and the top itself.






Just like the reptiles, all of them can be found at the river area, EXCEPT for the Jaguar's Tail Chuquiragua, which is found on the dried area and onward. You can get a better picture of it after finishing the game. And and before, you get the Glittering Sunrise Lily automatically.


If you followed all the photo sections and the missable achievement sections, this should give you the Professional Wildlife Photographer achievement! Congrats!

As for the story achievements, you are going to get them them one way or another trough the story, so you can't miss them.

But, for the sake of being thorough, here are they listed:


You'll get this by simply progressing thought the different areas and by finishing the story.

You will automatically get the page at the end of the Glimmering River map.


If you manage to skip this one... Well, color me impressed.

If everything went according to plant, by the end you should have 100% completed the game and received the final achievement: Master Photographer.
