A <FOOOOOOL!>'s guide to 07th Mod on Steam Deck
By Cap'n Crazy
The best version of the game runs great on Steam Deck, but it does require a little extra work. This guide will get you set up as quickly and easily as possible.

What do I need?
  • A copy of Umineko. I've confirmed the mod works on Deck with both Question and Answer arcs. This shoud also work fine for Higurashi, but I have not personally tested them yet.
  • 07th Mod for Linux (Link to Github)[github.com]. You want the file with the extension .tar.gz
  • A Steam Deck.

This guide assumes some familiarity with the Deck's functions. If something is unclear, please ask.
What do I do?
Installing 07th mod on Deck is (unsurprisingly) very similar to installing it on any other system, but there's an extra stumbling block we'll need to circumvent.

  • Install Umineko like normal onto your deck.
  • Switch to desktop mode.
  • Use the browser to download 07th Mod (See above for link).
  • Open the file (by default your Deck will use Ark) and extract the files.
  • Rename the file 'install' to 'install.sh' (it will become an executable shell script) and run it.
  • The installer runs in a browser window and is pretty self-explanatory. Follow the instructions and use the Wiki's FAQ page[07th-mod.com] on the off chance something goes wrong.
  • Once configured to your taste, hit the install button and wait for the download/install to complete.
  • If you're modding multiple games, select the next game you want to mod from the installer and repeat the process.

At this point, you have a modded install and you're just about ready to go! Please note the following to have the smoothest time possible:

  • The default Proton configuration gave me no trouble when playing the game, so you shouldn't need to fiddle with using a specific version.
  • By default, the game launches in a window. Hit F on your virtual keyboard (Steam + X to show/hide) to switch to fullscreen, or use a community config with F bound to something.
  • While you have the keyboard up, you can change the text speed by pressing 1 (slowest) to 3 (fastest), or use a config with these bound to a button.
  • The most popular community controller configuration, Endless Nine, sets A and B to left click to advance text. I suggest changing this to enter so the mouse cursor isn't constantly onscreen.

With all that out of the way, you should be ready to play!

UPDATE: At some point since publishing this guide, the devs changed some file names. The guide has been updated to reflect these changes on 16 December 2022. Thank you to Jucrispy for bringing this to my attention.

There are a couple things that weren’t mentioned here that I had trouble with personally:

First of all you have to be in desktop mode during the whole process right from the start. Also make sure that you have Mozilla Firefox installed before you start.

Next after you’ve downloaded the file you first need to extract it before you can click anything.

After you’ve extracted the file, you can just double click “setup” and the browser window will pop up.

I did not have to change the “install” file name and I also couldn’t find a file called that so I wasted a lot of time looking for it.

If you’re still struggling or want a more in depth guide with someone visually showing how it’s done, there is a video on YouTube called “Start with 07th Expansion Visual Novels on Steam Deck” which has a section on this specific method at around 6:00.

I did not need to change anything in the .tar.gz, so they might have updated it again.

Just starting umineko, I've got kinda the same question Joaco asked about what it adds, but is the redrawn art different from the New Images version of the characters? Will probably download later for the voice acting alone, just curious

@Niji I had this issue with Glorious Egg roll, and I solved it by running the game with Proton 8 instead.

"Rename the file 'install' to 'install.sh' (it will become an executable shell script) and run it"

I'm at this point, and I must be doing it completely wrong, I renamed it, but I cannot find it under that name in my documents. For the record, I've never used a Linux before this.

It would be nice with a picture tutorial here. A video tutorial might be a bit much, but I would greatly appreciate a photo direction here!

Full voice acting?! What a shame I only found out about that now.

Redrawn art and CGs in full HD and full voice acting, both taken from the Japanese PS3 version. It's a huge step up in quality from the vanilla game.

Isn't Umineko just a book? What does the mod add that isn't present in the regular version? CGs?

Just an update, I got this to work with the .sh method, however, double clicking would automatically open a kate file. If this is happening to you, try right clicking (L2) and running it in Konsole, from there it should open up the download window so you can select your MOD.
