INTRODUCTION GUIDE

Below you will find a collection of mods hosted by the Moogles & Mods discord, sorted and labeled for your browsing convenience. We all know Discord can be a struggle sometimes and though the rate of releases would make even a fully fleshed out guide a constant work in progress, we hope to keep everything available and up-to-date for the community.

A basic introduction to Chrono Cross modding and a brief explanation is in order, so please enjoy the lecture.

If you were to go into your "\Steam\steamapps\common\CHRONO CROSS THE RADICAL DREAMERS EDITION\data" folder, you would unsurprisingly enough come across .dat files. These for all intents and purposes are archive files, think of a .rar file and you get the right idea. Under normal circumstances developers tend to encrypt these files or use proprietary software to save/open them. Chrono Cross: RDE however is in a special position where all your .dat files are actually unencrypted, and can be accessed by you at any time using everyday archive software such as winrar.
This is going to be the basis of your modding experience. Replacing the contents of these .dat files using an archive program such as winrar.

The sections below will have modding instructions of course, but as an example of what you may be asked to do in the course of installing mods you may see some of the following:

Placing portraits inside of the hd.dat
Placing music inside of the cdrom.dat
Placing upscaled cinematics inside of the movie.dat

Chrono Cross is not a large base installation, and it is recommended that you back up any .dat file that you intend to modify as a means of reverting changes without a reinstallation.

Outside of .dat modifications, there are various third party softwares and modifications that have proven beneficial and or visually pleasing when ran alongside CC. So you may also see references and instructions regarding to things such as SpecialK, DXVK, HxD and ReShade while browsing this guide.
Please note that third party software is the recommended way to play this port. SpecialK alone will allow you to hit 60fps. Depending on your hardware and drivers, it may even be all you need. But some users may require extra steps. The key is patience, while your experience may vary, there is almost always a working combo for every person.

As a final friendly suggestion, we recommend the navigation menu and scrollbar in this guide instead of your mousewheel. Your tendons will thank you.

FPS MOD FIX

The Traditional Methods

There are two methods, the first one (and best) is using Special K (SK) tool, and for the people struggling with SK or simply don't like using it I have included a second method by only editing hex values of CHRONOCROSS.exe.

All this guide was made assuming you have a clean install of the game without any previous performance patch. (Mods that alters the graphical style doesn't matter)

METHOD ONE, USING SPECIAL K

1) Download Special K in the following link and install it like any other software

2) Open the game launcher, go to settings, select "Window mode" and your screen resolution, click apply then close the launcher

3) Open Special K and select "Add game", after the new window pop click "Browse" and select select CHRONOCROSS.exe located by default in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\CHRONO CROSS THE RADICAL DREAMERS EDITION”

4) In the SK window, right click on CHRONO CROSS that you previously added select Manage-> Create shortcut.

Now you can launch the game with SK using the new shortcut.

5) Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\CHRONO CROSS THE RADICAL DREAMERS EDITION and make a backup of CHRONOCROSS.exe just in case if you do any mistake with the following steps.

6) Download and install HxD from the official website, once you have it opened go to
"File ->Open" and select your CHRONOCROSS.exe, then go to "Search -> Replace" select the tab called "Hex-values" and put the following values:

Search for: 3B C7 72 18
Replace With: 3B C7 74 18

In "search directions" select All

After that press OK and save it

That's all you have to do outside the game.

7) Open the game using the Chrono Cross shortcut that SK created previously, you will see a new overlay, that means the program is running well, now you have to open SK control panel by pressing Ctrl + shift + backspace and make a few changes:

In the "performance settings" tab select "unlocked", a new box called "frame pacing" should appear, put this values: 0 in the first field, 0 in the second field, and 07 in the third field.

NOTE: If you have problems after using these values you could try 0 in the first field, 7 in the second field, and 8 in the third field.

8) In the "Framerate limiter" tab check the option "Framerate limit" if it unchecked, double click on the space, type 59,94 (or 60) and press enter, on the same space, right click it and make sure the "Latent sync" option if checked.

9) OPTIONAL: If you have a powerful PC you can change the internal resolution to 1440p or 4K for a big improve in graphics.

That's all, now restart the game and enjoy it at 60 FPS.

Optional (by Kaldaien): I fixed some artifacts on certain stretched sprites caused by using bilinear filtering when nearest neighbor is actually required. This fix is only active in 1440p and 4K mode, (version 22.5.15) with ISA flicker fix applied. Replace in My Documents/My Mods/SpecialK folder Download[cdn.discordapp.com]

METHOD TWO, WITHOUT SPECIAL K

This method is done by purely editing hex values with HxD, you should know that using this method doesn't fix the tearing VSync problems but the difference with vanilla version still night and day.

First of all go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\CHRONO CROSS THE RADICAL DREAMERS EDITION and make a backup of CHRONOCROSS.exe just in case if you do any mistake with the following steps.

1) Download and install HxD from the official website, once you have it opened go to
"File ->Open" and select your CHRONOCROSS.exe, then go to "Search -> Replace" select the tab called "Hex-values" and put the following values:

Search for: 83 46 14 02 8B
Replace With: 83 46 14 00 8B

2) Do the same thing with the following values, you may select "All" in search directions if HxD couldn't find it

Search for 6B C6 1A -----> Replace With 6B C6 07

Search for 3B C7 72 18 -----> Replace With 3B C7 74 18

Search for AE 9C 08 -----> Replace With AE 1E 09

NOTE: The last value speed up the game a bit, if you don't like it you can change to AE 1E 08 instead

After finishing go to "File->Save".

That's all, now open the game and enjoy it

The "Uh Oh, that didn't work" Methods

So you followed the guides, you edited the hexes and you played by all the rules but something is going wrong. The most common complaint around is that there are periods of slowdown, specifically during the beginnings and ends of battles. Some players claim their FPS hits single digits, some players claim they get screen tearing even with SpecialK actively working to repair it.
There are a few things that can contribute to this, and fortunately there do appear to be fixes.

The quickest way to fix the battle slowdowns is to install DXVK, which will run your game in vulkan instead of directx. Early on during the game's release this was found to be a very effective method of speeding things up. Resulting in very PSX-like framerates across the game. After the hex edits and specialK were adopted this method was abandoned by the mainstream but sees very effective use by those who have AMD builds, Issues setting game profiles via drivers, slowdowns in battle and screen tearing while SK is running. This includes myself.
DXVK can be ran alongside the traditional installation with SpecialK and hex edits but there is of course a downside to using old fixes with modern fixes. The modern SpecialK ability to upscale the internal game resolution is not compatible with dxvk, and the feature should be disabled before installing it. However, I still highly recommend using it in conjuction with both SpecialK and the Hex Edits from the traditional installation method.
Alternatively, you can run DXVK with a vanilla installation of CC, or alongside the Hex edits alone.

The installation is simple and very quick. Download the latest build of DXVK from their github page[github.com] and use an archiver such as Winrar or 7zip to open the .gz file. Navigate into the the folder inside and open x32.
From here, select d3d11.dll and dxgi.dll and drag them into your steamapps\common\CHRONO CROSS THE RADICAL DREAMERS EDITION folder. Do not try to use the files inside x64, they will not work. Ensure your game is running in borderless fullscreen, and relaunch. Hopefully your issues will have been solved.

Known issues with DXVK
-Alt tabbing misbehaves. CC wants to stay in focus at all times.
-Incompatibility with resolution upscaling in SpecialK

Outdated Methodology that may or may not aid the desperate

If playing in fullscreen on a 16:9 monitor, choose '16-9 - fullscreen' (you heathen), if playing in 4:3 in borderless fullscreen (As you should be. Respect the original aspect ratio, dammit) choose the 4-3 borderless fullscreen preset.

As this doesn't scale very well for 1080 screens running the game in 1280x960 4:3 windowed /borderless, I have included a different preset for that resolution.

If you're on a 4K monitor(3840 x 2160), I highly recommend going to your config .ini in 'Documents\My Games\CHRONO CROSS THE RADICAL DREAMERS EDITION\Steam\a bunch of numbers' and manually setting the resolution to 2880 x 2160, and Screenmode to 1. This will get you the best possible image on a 4K display, in a proper 4:3 resolution. 'Graphicsmode' can be set to 0 for old graphics, and 1 for new graphics.

Lossy presets looks better IMO, but introduce (purposeful) artifacting, blur, and ntsc feedback. They also remove the borders on the fullscreen versions. I have included 3 versions, one for 4K fullscreen, one for 1080 fullscreen, and one for my preferred 2880x2160 borderless.

Other recommendations:

I highly recommend using classic graphics with the new models in combination with this preset. In order to get the new models in the classic mode do the following:

From the Data folder in the install directory, open both cdrom.dat and cdrom2.dat in separate 7zip windows.

Copy the player folder from 'cdrom2\field object' into 'cdrom\fieldobject' and overwrite. DO NOT delete the folder first as there are unchanged files in cdrom.dat. This will only effect field models.

To also change the battle models, you need to copy the 'player' and 'monster' folder from 'cdrom2\battle' to 'cdrom\battle', and overwrite. Again DO NOT delete them first as there are unchanged files in cdrom.dat.

Chrono Classic: Original Pixel Font Replacement

This mod replaces the font with the original font from the PS1 game.
Currently this mod is English-only, as I have not found a dump of the original text. I will need to update it when I have the time and patience to manually create the fonts, or someone can provide me with a dump of the original fonts.

Installation instructions:
1. Navigate to your install directory, and into the '\data' folder.
2. Make a backup of 'font.dat', and 'lang.dat'.
3. Right click both and open them in 7zip.
4. Drop the spritefont files in 'font.dat', and 'cmnmes.txt' in 'lang.dat'.
5. Click 'Yes' when prompted if you want to overwrite the files.
6. Close the archives, and enjoy the classic font!

Mod compatibility:
Any mod that changes 'cmnmes.txt' or replaces 'lang.dat' will be incompatible with this mod, as it will cause text spacing issues in battles. You can fix this by adding this mod after you have installed the language mod, but it could break parts of the other mod if it has edited that file. If you want to be sure, the date the original 'cmnmes.txt' file was last edited was 29th November 2021. If it still shows that, you can use this mod with no compatibility issues

If you are a mod author who would like me to make a compatible version of the file, then send me a message and your 'cmnmes.txt' and I will edit it to be compatible.

BAT file automation of mod installation example

Author: Edale Uses 7zip's standalone commandline exe (7z.exe) to handle the work, the .BAT commands themselves are actually pretty simple: copy /-Y cdrom.dat cdrom.bak copy /-Y movie.dat movie.bak 7z.exe u cdrom.dat sound\ 7z.exe u movie.dat .\movie\*.bk2 If there is already a cdrom.bak or movie.bak file, they will be overwritten. (/-Y switch has it ask the user before overwriting a file) as a side note, this actually does things MUCH faster than using 7zip's GUI when using the GUI, it uses the 'a' operator, which make it rebuild the entire archive. I use the 'u' operator, which only updates the specific files updated. you do need to watch you syntax to make sure the files end up in the right location in the .DAT archives though sound\ takes the 'sound' folder, and all subfolders and files, and puts it in the archive while preserving folder structure. .\movie\*.bk2 takes all .BK2 files from the movie folder, and puts them into the root of the archive, without any folder structure. rd /s /q .\sound rd /s /q .\movie del 7z.exe del 1mod_install.bat del 2cleanup.bat that's a BAT I made to cleanup all the mod files after the install. Drop the bat files, along with the folders containing the modded files, into the game's \data\ folder, then run the 1st BAT file, then run the second BAT file after verifying the mod installed properly. Ending Credits info for Upscalers

Author: Edale Ending credits location: hd.dat/staff/staff24us.png After some testing with @WhtSqurlPrnc we've determined that the ending credits can be upscaled, but only to a certain point. As near as we can tell, the game uses 14-bits to determine the resolution of the credit scroll, which gives you a maximum vertical resolution of 16,383 (probably effectively 16,382) pixels. With the credit scroll starting at 8,950 pixels, that lets you upscale to approximately x1.82, giving you a vertical resolution of 16,289 pixels, just under what we believe to be the cap.

Your comment was removed because you're spreading entirely baseless misinformation about combining two widely used pieces of software to create an imaginary malware on your computer.
Not only is special K widely used and has been for years, but it's got an active discord with a dev willing to talk and troubleshoot with users. The hex editor is entirely harmless as well. If you'd like to actually discuss your issues with members of the mod teams you can visit said discords for either specialk or moogles and mods for help.
What we will NOT tolerate is someone leaving entirely misleading lies on our comment field designed to scare other users, when the issue is clearly user error. Take it somewhere else or play a different game, hundreds of users over the last several years have used this guide and their modding communities just fine. It's extremely safe to say whatever you are experiencing is user error, and should be removed.

I don't get a performance tab in SpecialK (using the latest version) it says 'portions of this plugin are not compatible with this version of Chrono Cross' and I only see internal resolution settings (which if set at 4K and restarted causes SpecialK to 'Metal Gear !' sound and crash requiring me to reset the config). Also method 2's hex values cannot be found in HxD in the latest version of the .exe which I assume is due to an update to the game at some point? (I had only purchased it today) - Does this mean a FPS fix is no longer available? The only thing I can think of trying at this point is using Nvidia Control Panel to play on DXGI swapchain and give that a go.

Real sad and poor effort on Square Enix's part on this port.

The guide's original purpose was to be an index and repository for any mods that were originally exclusively available via discord download links and the discord group. As it grew and more modders contributed, the list started to include non-discord links such as nexus and the mod manager was eventually made to handle Chrono Cross. From what I've been told recently, direct download links from discord actually have their urls updated occasionally, so there may certainly be dead or inactive links listed among the guide at this point. Without a total overhaul and a recheck with pretty much every link and mod maker, the guide is going to be remarkably difficult to update at this point due to all the mods available and their increased availability.

While the mod manager may or may not have all the mods listed or initially available here, I admit I haven't used it so I don't know.

Hi everyone, is there a guide for Steam Deck or can I take the info here and apply it? There seem to be some programs involved that are for Windows and I'm not sure they would actually run in SteamDeck's Arch Linux desktop mode. If anyone could point me in the right direction as to how to get started modding Chrono Cross RDE on my Steam Deck it would be amazing. Thanks a ton either way to all the modders, people involved with the guide and the community for putting this all together.
