Sometimes, bigger is indeed better.

Here i will show how you get a bigger grid to build a bigger Ship without using mods, easy in short time.
Preparation
At first you need a new Save Game.
My advice, create a universe with a lot of resources because a larger ship and crew logically consumes more resources later on.

To enlarge the ship we need space in two directions (top left and top right), so build a ship or use the one that is available right at the beginning, depending on the start you chose and fly in a system that is as empty as possible, the systems at the jump points are best.

Now name your ship, remember the name and save your game.

Find and open Savegame
Now we have to go to the save game folder.
  1. Make a right click on Space heaven in your Steam library and click Manage, then Local files and Browse.

  2. Now you should be in the Space Heaven files folder. Next you go into the save game folder and there you go into the folder with the name of the savegame where you make the preparation.

  3. There you select the "save" folder

  4. In there should be a file called "Game" .Now double click on the file and open it with the Editor
Edit Save Game
Now you have a file with a wall full of text in which we have to look for the ship Name.
Press SHIFT+F, a search field should open, enter the name of your ship there.
You should see the following line there...

Now comes the important part, there are two parts, "sx=" and "sy=".
SY is the length of the ship, SX is the width

Which numbers you now have to enter there? Well, a grid has 28x28 squares, which means that you have to add +28 for each grid, i.e. = 28 -> 56 -> 84 -> 112 -> 140 -> 168-> etc.......
Personally, I mostly use sx="84" sy="140", this size is perfect, big but not to big, you can of course also swap the numbers to sx="140" sy="84" then you have a wide ship
You can also make it bigger but this can bring maybe problems.

The next place you need to edit is your ship's "roof" area for systems. If dimensions in ship's hull and roof will mismatch, you may not be able to build subsystem in some parts of the ship.
A simple method to find the correct text line is to press SHIFT+F again, put "roof" in the search bar and click the search direction down, it will show the first best result and that is the line that still belongs to your ship.
it looks like this.....
Here you put exactly the same numbers in the "sx=" and "sy=" areas you puted in the line with the Ship name!

!Watch out! you need focus, don't scroll around to much after you edit the first text with your ships name or click on the arrow too often, in the whole text wall there are also the text fields of AI ships that look exactly like your ship text, it can easily happen that you land in the section of an AI ship!

That's all, now save the file and start the game, now you should have a bigger grid and you can build the ship of your dreams.

For adding more core / system points, or for changing shield properties, I've recently published the following Space Haven mods in Nexus website.

- My 666 Core Points: https://www.nexusmods.com/spacehaven/mods/117
- My Shields: https://www.nexusmods.com/spacehaven/mods/128

You may find some other useful mods there from the "My Mods" series.

Also, I shouldn't admit this, but fun bug, if you expand a ship and max its system points (via cores), then take it back into the editor and reduce it's size, you get to keep all those system points. I did this before by making 2x1 ships and then reducing them down to 1x1 so I could have four of them. This is without even doing the ship size hack here. (They probably will want to fix this but who knows :) )

So if you need to claim a ship, but can't because you're over total ship points, go into your savefile, find the <fleet> section, and move the line for the desired ship into the section for your faction (player=true). Then, you need to go to the <ship> entry for the ship, and at the way bottom of its section, there's a <settings> tag, which says something like status=Derelict. Change the status to "Normal." Bing, you got a ship.
I did this just yesterday for a Build Outpost mission.

I bumped up to 3x3 (84x84) but do you know how to change the total ship points available? It makes it so you can't claim ships, which also means you can't do "build outpost" missions.

(I found a way around that, which I'll explain, but if there's a way to bump the total ship points it would be easier, though I fear it's hard-coded in the exe.)

I have used this in the Alpha 17 Build. Still works great. Thanks for this.

Orange Mint: mmh I have no problems, everything works for me, even in the beta. maybe you made a mistake somewhere.
I will also improve the Guid a bit and make the instructions clearer in the near future

this does not work for the beta

Thanks! Also, since the ship is so big, the shield points become abysmally low... Is there a way to change that too?

there is already a guid about system points https://gtm.steamproxy.vip/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2134400357
