Single Button Parry Controller Schemes.
By Lily
Say goodbye to the awful LB+RB Parry. This guide will help you set better controls, without the need for third party software, because good controls are fundamental.

Welcome.
This guide is made for controller-users who hate the given LB+RB Parry schemes that the game provides. Hopefully once you're done here we will have improved your game-play-experience, as good controls are important for an enjoyable game.

Personally I hate both the 'Default' and 'Alternate' controller schemes that the game provides, so I took it upon myself to create some better ones. They should all feel in someway more aligned to the style pioneered by the Batman, Arkham series of superhero games.

Finding The Correct Options
First of all we will need to get to the correct options.

At the main menu simply select "Options".
If you are in a game you'll first need to press "Esc" and then you'll see "Options"

From within 'Options' select the "Controls" Tab in the top right. As seen below;

Scroll down until you see the "Controls" heading. NOT the "Keyboard" heading that is at the top.

Then select "Customise Controls"

-

To make this a little easier, set your controls back to their default by pressing R on your keyboard.
This will make it much smoother to follow my guide as now the only buttons that you will need to change are highlighted in each configuration as pink.

Here are the default Xbox Controller Keybinds if for some reason they are needed for reference:

Controller Key
If you need a reference of the difference's between Xbox & PS4.

I use an Xbox Controller so from here-on-out my guide will keep to that format.

Important Information.
  • Thanks to Ubisofts awful keybind system; each of my configurations will come with a minor quirk that I shall explain within each configuration.

  • Remember when setting the Parry keybind; to set both "Parry 1" & "Parry 2" to the same button, as shown in the pictures.

  • I would also like to take this time to point out; that my config's DO NOT "Break the ability to run faster by holding 'A'". This this is simply not a feature that the game provides, even when using the given default keybinds. 'A' or 'RT' DO NOT speed up your movement. It's a myth / placebo effect.
Choosing Your Prefered Style.
Simply put; it's all about which button would you like to use as your Parry; and which minor downside that comes with using Ubisofts binding system, do you not mind having to put up with.

I would simply recommend to keep on reading and to pay close attention to my description for each config, then decide which one will work best for you, as they each have their own notable differences as a consequence of using the given keybind system.
The Y-Parry

  • "Parry" (& "Dismount") become 'Y' {Same as Arkham}
  • "Quick Attack" becomes 'X'
  • "Heavy Attack" becomes 'RT'
  • "Overpower Attack" (Combo Spender), becomes RT+X
  • "Dodge" becomes 'A' {Same as Arkham}
  • "Rear Mount" (Horse Handbrake) becomes 'B'
  • "Assassinate" & "Primary Interact" become 'RB'

This is probably the closest we can get to a full Arkham Y Parry.
We cannot parry on a horse so there's is no conflict here. However there are a few things to note:

You will notice that "Climb Up" is also 'A' and the game tells us this is a conflict with our dodge ability. While technically true, it does not actually break gameplay. It only means that to now climb walls, we will first have to perform a dodge and then afterwards continue holding down 'A' in order to start wall climbing.
However; if we press 'A' when already touching a wall, it will negate the need to perform a dodge and should immediately start climbing.

If you do not like the way the Wall Climb works or the Heavy Attack keybind, we can instead use:
The B-Parry

  • "Parry" (& "Dismount") become 'B'
  • "Quick Attack" becomes 'X'
  • "Heavy Attack" becomes 'Y'
  • "Overpower Attack" (Combo Spender), becomes X+Y, {Similar to Arkham's Y+B}
  • "Dodge" becomes 'A' {Same as Arkham}
  • "Climb Up" becomes 'RT'
  • "Crouch" becomes 'L' ('Left Stick Press')
  • "Rear Mount" (Horse Handbrake} also becomes 'B'
  • "Assassinate" & "Primary Interact" become 'RB'
  • Optionally we can also change "Horse Follow Road" from 'A' to 'RT' with this config.
This is my personal favourite configuration and is closer to the "Alternate" preset as it mimics putting "Climb Up" onto 'RT' but it looks like there are a few new arising conflicts as a result:

First of all, we can no longer use "Rear Mount" (Aka horse 'handbrake') as holding the keybind will now just dismount you. Big whoop. Nobody uses it anyway.

Second of all, Crouch now shares its keybind with "Knockout" and "Secondary Interact". This does not effect game-play on a grand scale. The only things to note here are:

When performing a knockout: Make 100% sure you are within the knockout range of the enemy you want to knockout as to avoid un-crouching when pressing the keybind. Otherwise you will fail to knock them out and instead stand up, breaking your stealth and possibly alerting the target of your presence. If done correctly you will knockout the enemy and return to your original crouching position in a single button press.
Vise versa, if you want to un-crouch, make sure you are not near someone to knockout.

Additionally, if you need to use the Secondary Interact at all, it just means your character will crouch when you do. No big deal.

Climbing walls is also no problem with this configuration, as all you need to do now is simply hold "RT" with no arising conflicts.

Now onto:
The RT-Parry
  • "Parry" becomes 'RT'
  • "Quick Attack" becomes 'X'
  • "Heavy Attack" becomes 'Y'
  • "Overpower Attack" (Combo Spender), becomes X+Y, {Similar to Arkham's Y+B}
  • "Dodge" becomes 'A' {Same as Arkham}
  • "Rear Mount" (Horse Handbrake} becomes 'B'
  • "Assassinate" & "Primary Interact" become 'RB'
  • Optionally we can also change "Horse Follow Road" from 'A' to 'RT' with this config.

This is sort of a middle ground between the Y Parry & B Parry configurations.

It shares the problems of the 'A' to "Climb Up" that comes with my Y-Parry config as well as the inability to "Rear Mount" (Horse Handbrake) from my B-Parry config. Though it does not share the Crouching problem of the B-Parry config while also leaving us with its nice bind for the X+Y Combo Spender.

There is one more config for those that like the RT-Parry but do not like the 'A' to Wall-Climb problem, but do not mind the Crouch problem. (Because who even uses Knockout anyway? Right?)

And so comes:
The Alternate RT-Parry
  • "Parry" becomes 'RT'
  • "Quick Attack" becomes 'X'
  • "Heavy Attack" becomes 'Y'
  • "Overpower Attack" (Combo Spender), becomes X+Y, {Similar to Arkham's Y+B}
  • "Dodge" becomes 'B'
  • "Crouch" becomes 'L' ('Left Stick Press')
  • "Rear Mount" (Horse Handbrake} becomes 'B'
  • "Assassinate" & "Primary Interact" become 'RB'
  • Optionally we can also change "Horse Follow Road" from 'A' to 'RT' with this config.

The difference here is that 'B' becomes "Dodge" instead of 'A' & as a result, climbing walls is no longer a conflict. Though it does mean we are back to the Crouch problem of using 'L' as well as the inability to Horse Handbrake. Again.. big whoop. And again again, who even uses the knockout? Just kill kill kill.
The LB+RB Melee Wheel Swap.
At spear level 3 (Progress story to unlock) We gain the ability to have another 4 melee skills bound to 'LB' on a secondary melee wheel. Totalling 8 abilities than we can use on 'LB'.

The key-bind to "Switch Combat Abilities" (Aka, change the melee wheel.) is 'LB+Dpad Down' by default.

In a pinch, this keybind is not that easy to use. However;

Using any of my controller schemes you'll notice we moved "Interact" onto 'RB'. This change, along with the move of the "Parry" keybind made during my guide's process, allows us to set the switching of the melee wheel to 'LB+RB'; which was originally the "Parry" bind.

Personally I think this change should definitely be considered if you go ahead and decide to use any of my controller schemes. But it is optionally up to you. Though I think that it makes for much more fluid combat experience.

See below for keybind location.

Finishing Up

Once finished you will be greeted with this pop-up:

Just ignore the warning. Hit 'A' to confirm, and back out of the menu's.

Enjoy :)
