How to use non meta tactics to win
By Fernando
This guide will show you how to succesfully utilize obscure tactics so the game stays fresh. I will showcase some tactics that I have used in FM22 to success and explain why it works ( worked with an average team). Never have to use 4231, 433, or 41212 ever again, or at least use more exciting roles other than DLP, BWM, and AF every time.

Why to use obscure tactics?
I don't know about you but I have played FM since 2019. And since then, after I learned everything, I've pretty much learned that the best tactics are probably 433, or 4231 gegenpress. At first it was fun but then you just end up steam rolling everyone with a tactic and it makes it boring, especially when you use the same old boring roles, ( IF, WB, Mezzala ). Cough cough Lollujo cough cough. So, ive started using obscure tactics with obscure roles like segundo volante, ramdateur, WTM, and in the new fm, wide centerback. Not only that but ive started to use extremely wide width which is actually a very effective tactic with two wide wingers.
442 Extremely Wide with two IWBs and a Segundo volante
I started using this tactic with an above average team in my save in Greece, Atromitos. If you know, Olympiacos walks the league every single year because they just have way more money. PAOK and AEK are also way better with more money. However, I managed to breed through various youth talents through my academy, most notably, Marios Tzavidas and Markos Chios, who is a 6'6 16 year old with absolutely nothing but technical ability. I also had some good young wingers like Koutsias and Tasos Chatzegovanis so I wanted to actually make an interesting tactic. So, it goes as follows:

Sweeper Keeper on defend
Two IWB, left on attack, right on support,
Two BPD,
One segundo volante on support, ( occasionally changed to BWM)
One CM on support, ( or carilero) ( CM must shoot more often and hold position)
Two Wingers on Attack ( tell them to stay wide )
One DLF
One AF

This tactic was designed to overload the midfield while maintaining a lot of width to stretch the pitch and create a diamond shape in the final third. It helps to have a striker that can actually just run and score, which I did have and he was 18 year old Joao Costa. I used this tactic for two seasons and he scored around 25 in the first time and 35 in the second season. Now, your wingers must be quick and be able to dribble and cross. The IWB really just need to know how to pass and run. My rb Kyriakos Kivrakidis was abosultely useless on the ball, but he had 16 work rate and stamina so he just ran and did a good job.

Now, you want to set it up as follows:
Extremely wide width
Positive
Higher tempo + More direct passing
Play out of Defence + pass into space
Higher line of engagement + Stay on feet + Press more often + use tighter marking

I was the overwhelmingly the leagues top scoring team with some of the best defence and I won the league over Olympiacos. Granted, I only tried this tactic with Atromitos so I won't know if it might work for other teams but it worked splendidly and was very interesting to watch on the game higlights.
3142 Going up the leagues
This tactic I specifically used in Seria C and B with Palermo because I wanted to revive the 3 back system especially in Italian football. It was extremely succesful, maybe cus I was one of the best teams in Seria C, but I got an unexpected double promotion into Seria A where it just helped me survive. Granted, I fell back into a 532 in winning scenarios for Seria A but i think this tactic is actually underrated. It goes as follows:

Goalkeeper,
One WCB, two CD, central one on cover, other on defend (could use two wcb and one bpd)
Left WM on support
Right Winger on attack
Left CM Attack, Right BMW support,
CDM DLP ( Can use regista or half back )
AF and PF on support. ( PF shoot more often)

More Direct passing
Pass into Space
Higher Tempo
Play out of defense,
Fairly Narrow
Distribute to CB
Counter + Counter Press
Force Oppositon Outside
Higher Defense live + Higher line of Engagement
Press more often + Prevent Short GK
Tighter Marking

As I said, this worked with a double promotion but in the highest division I had to switch to a back 5 with one CWB and one WB. Can use carilero but overall, this tactic heavily requires on a goal scoring mid, with two strikers capable of scoring because my two strikers had 23 + 22 goals and my CM on attack had 11. Goals can ocassionaly come from the wings but highly unlikely. They just run and win the ball back to cross in the ball.

It worked because what you want to create is that diamond shape with a metronme in midfield and this shape really faciltates easy movement and doesn't require the most technnical of players.
Variation of 4231
In my final season at Palermo, I wanted to win it all so I went to a 4231 shamelessly. However, I used diferent roles and a strikerless role at that because I didn't have the funds to find a great striker.
The backline was a traditional one in a 4231, BPD + WBs. However, the attacking roles were different.

F9, SS, Left AM AP , Right Winger on Attack.
One CDM on Segundo Volante attack, one CM on DLP Defend.

Right winger also had roam from position and shoot more often.
Left AM AP had dribble more cross back post.

This tactic won me the treble but I also had a super team. I had made a nearly entire Itlaian team with a sprinkle of foreign and youth talent. GK Italian. RB Italian, LCB Italian. LB Italian. CM Italian, AM Italian, and Striker Italian. LW was Georgian from our youth academy and the bench was mostly comprised of Italians from the youth acadmey.

I also used a variation of this in FM 21 with Deportivo La Coruna with a Ramdaeuter on the LW instead and a IF on the Right with a Segundo Volante ( attack) and Segundo Volante Attack with an enganche. Also won the treble.

So, if you want to win the treble, use the 4231.
523
Ill keep this short.

I was Man United, and it got pretty boring fast even with using a 523. But, I used a

Sweeper Keeper
2 WCB on attack Central BPD
Right Wing Back on IWB Defend
Left WB on CWB
CM Attack
Cm Carilero
Two Inverted Wingers
F9

I lost to PSG but walked the Prem. Was boring tho but 5 back systems are very effective. Do not use carilero if you do not have a super team. Instead, use 5212 but never 532. 532 is the death tactic.
Thank you
If you made it this far, wow. But this was fun to right because I like sharing my tactics and using obscure tactics ( thanks Zealend). If there is another tactic thats interesitng please share.
