Definitely a learning curve to this game, although as you figure stuff out it becomes easier and more fun. Using the journal by pressing j has a bunch of super helpful tips and tricks to make it a bit easier. You can also press "e" to examine an enemy and it will tell you all about them and even gives some hints on how to deal with them sometimes.
