On modern Windows (10 or 11) and modern processors, Livelock and many other games no longer work. They will start, but stop soon after.

The problem is bugs in OpenSSL which is used by many (older) game-engines. Intel describes the bug here: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/developer/articles/troubleshooting/openssl-sha-crash-bug-requires-application-update.html

The proper fix would be to replace the buggy version of OpenSSL with a newer fixed version. Unfortunately, in many cases that has to be done by the game-developer. In some cases, you can replace files.

However there is an easier workaround that disables the buggy part of OpenSSL and that can be done easily by adding an environment-variable.

To do this, open a commandline or press WIN+R and type
SystemPropertiesAdvanced
and press enter

You'll see the system properties dialog.

Next, click on 'Environment Variables' near the bottom.

You'll see a window with User variables, and witrh Systemvariables.

We'll want to add it to System variables, so below System Variables click New

For name of variable, type:
OPENSSL_ia32cap
For Value of variable, type:
~0x20000000
and click on OK

Verify that in the lower section SystemVariables there is now an entry with
OPENSSL_ia32cap ~0x20000000

Click OK

To verify it worked, you can start the game, or go to a command-line and type
set
and press enter to view the environment variables. One of them will be the one we added.
