Situation
It seems Elden Ring has issues with multiple controllers. Even if those controllers are only virtual.
So this solution aims on removing unwanted controllers from Windows and only have the one, you actually want to use to play.
Check recognized controllers
To check the controllers currently recognized by Windows:
  1. Open Start-Menu
  2. Search for the entry Set up USB game controllers
  3. Now you should see a list of controllers. Your goal is that only one is displayed.

Disable other controllers
The easiest way is to simply unplug them. The other way is to disable the device in Windows Device Manager.
For me, I have a Razer Hutsman V2 keyboard, which generates two virtual game controllers. Those two I had to disable.

Wierd, I have a dualsense, dualshock, 2 virtual controllers from 2 XIMs, and some times turn my dualsense into an X360 controller via DS4Windows.

Elden Ring has never given me a problem.

Or use HIDHide instead of unplugging everything to play 1 game?
Alternatively, devs could make their game work properly from the start, not just default to controller 1

Here's a foolproof way to get a controller to work with any game. STOP SUPPORTING SHODDY DEVELOPERS.

If people keep having issues with the Steam-driven-controllers it might be worth looking into DS4Windows, I believe it adds extra's to support controllers (correct me if i'm wrong), also allows to remap your controller with keyboard inputs.
