Assorted tips for playing the game. Not meant as comprehensive breeding guide, one exists already.

For breeding, I'm avoiding giving exact hints how to get each color or pattern, so this guide is spoiler free in that sense.

there can be multiple fishes "in hand"
free spaces in book are meant to be used
having too many fishes in big pool makes makes it hard to find anything
keeping too many fishes in pools stops fish spawning in the river (yes, there's a limit)

Shapes

three triangle shapes can be used in place of three spots for the book
if book doesn't accept right number of spots, try to get spots aligned closer to how they're aligned in the picture
pay attention which combinations yield which shapes, knowledge will come handy later (unless you're just lazy and check the breeding guide)
color inversions are possible, though sometimes it's faster to start again (switching dominant color with plain colored fishes seems to be more likely)

Colors

in addition of the regular colors, there's a rare variant in the river, catch it when you see it
new plain colors can appear when mixing same or different colors, some variants can be rare as 1% and one of them is even rarer
with some colors there are multiple possible combinations that will yield randomly same bit rarer color, keep experimenting
if you don't get the rarest color accidentally, final page of book reveals it (from there it's possible to guess what color combination could give the rarest color
