How this Tier List works
!!!DISCLAIMER!!!

THIS TIER LIST IS CURRENTLY OUTDATED. I WILL UPDATE IT ONCE I GET AROUND IT, CURRENTLY WORK IS TAKING UP MOST OF MY TIME.

The items in this list are ranked by their individual power. In the case of evolved weapons, I will also consider the respective item needed for the evolution. This ranking assumes you have every upgrade bought and will consider an item's strength across the whole run. I added this explanation because people were arguing how strong Garlic is because of its early game potential when it becomes completely obsolete late-game and is just a slot-waste. Weaker ranked items could be a run-winner for you if you if they give you what you need in your run. This game is about adapting to what you already have, not about always picking the strongest option available. Picking a lower tier items for a possible evolution can be better than choosing a stronger item that will not grant you one.

This Tier List is based on my personal opinion and should not be taken as factual. It is simply my thoughts about the game after understanding how it works and how to win.

If you want the raw tier-lists without any explanation, jump to the *** Tier List - Summary sections.

With that said, let's get into the guide!
Explanation of the tiers
S Tier
These items are the most powerful in the game. Picking up any of these during your run will tremendously increase your chance of winning and sometimes single-handedly carry you to victory.

A Tier
These items are very strong to pick up, but are just slightly outclassed by the S Tier.

B Tier
These items are balanced very well, they don't make you overpowered but also don't actively weaken your character.

C Tier
These items provide some usefulness, but you are usually better off picking something else.

D Tier
These items are straight up bad and should never be picked up, except to unlock their respective achievements once.
Weapons - S Tier
King Bible

The best weapon in the game. The King Bible is insanely strong even at level 1 and will allow you to run into anything to kill it for most of the run.

Unholy Vespers - Evolved King Bible

In addition, King Bible also transforms into the most powerful evolved weapon in the game. Having this item will auto-win your run 95% of the time. While it's damage output is not as high as other weapons, the knockback in a circle around you is strong enough to prevent any enemy from touching you as long as you stand still.

Runetracer

This thing is a beast. The initial level 1 is very weak, but as you upgrade and gain more projectiles, this thing will outdamage any evolved weapon.

Magic Wand

The Magic Wand is absolutely insane. It provides enough damage to oneshot every enemy in the early minutes and the upgrades make this weapon insanely powerful. The knockback combined with the high rate-of-fire make this an excellent weapon for both offense and defense.

Holy Wand - Evolved Magic Wand

It's literally Magic Wand with no delay. This and Unholy Vespers will win you any run guaranteed.

Hellfire - Evolved Fire Wand

This one is interesting because while Fire Wand is in a lower tier, Hellfire iteself is absolutely insane. Getting this early will win you the run almost guaranteed and speed up your levelling tremendously. As a bonus, the equipment needed to evolve this, Spinach, is also an S-Tier equipment, making this an excellent choice to pick up in any run.
Weapons - A Tier
Fire Wand

The Fire Wand is a strong choice if you lack damage. While the weapon itself is outclassed by some others, the evolved version Hellfire and its base equipment being Spinach make the Fire Wand a strong choice in any run.

Bone

Now bone is hard to rate because it is only accessable to Mortaccio. I will just say it's a nice starting weapon to have and not explain further because no other character will have any way of getting this anyways, therefore raiting it is kind of pointless.

Peachone/Ebony Wings

Ah, the infamous bird duo. The are the only item in the game where the evolved version doesn't require a specific equipment but is a combination of the two weapons. This means that the evolved version only requires 1 slot (as all the other evolved weapons need a specific equipment to be used) which should automatically make them S-Tier. The only thing keeping them from being S-Tier is that both birds need a lot of investment before they become strong. I recommend getting 1-2 other weapons before building these, but when you can upgrade them they have insane damage potential.

Vandalier - Combined Birds

The evolved bird combo just combines the two birds into one item and frees up a weapon slot to fill in the late-game. Getting this weapon to Level 8 for the 1.2 cooldown reduction and 80% area increase will destroy anything around you. The only reason it is not an S-Tier weapon is,once again, the heavy investment it requires to become strong.

I will refer to Peachone, Ebony Wings and Vandalier as the birds in the rest of this guide.
Weapons - B Tier
Axe

The Axe on paper doesn't seem too bad. Nice rate-of-fire, high damage, good projectile count and piercing. The huge drawback of this weapon is the fact you throw it upwards and it drops down. This heavily limits the range and in most runs you will be playing The Library where enemies approach only from the left and right sites, making the Axe somewhat useless. It is still a nice weapon to pick up for your 5th or 6th slot if you lack some high damage weapons. The evolved version also relies on a decent equipment, making the Axe an acceptable weapon choice.

Death Spiral - Evolved Axe

Good damage, good utility, just outclassed by other weapons. I recommend getting this in your 6th slot after getting the Vandalier, but it is still useful if you are forced into the Axe early on.

Santa Water

This weapon is often classified worse by a lot of people but I think it is a little bit slept on. It's big downside is that you can't control where the weapon fires, but people tend to forget that the damage lingers and you can often manipulate opponents to move into the field before it disappears. The weapon really only becomes good with a few upgrades and I recommend only getting it from slot 4th and up, but it's not bad if you are forced into it early on.
Weapons - C Tier
Knife

Our first member of the C-Tier is the Knife. The knife deals low damage, has no knockback, doesn't pierce and can only be fired in the direction you're walking in. The only thing keeping it from D-Tier is the fact that the evolved version is somewhat useful and relies on Bracer, a decent equipment, for its evolution. Generally, you wanna avoid the knife.

Thousand Edge - Evolved Knife

This one isn't all too bad, it does decent damage and can clear you an escape path. It is sadly being dragged down by how bad the knife is and how much stronger the other evolved options are.

Cross

The cross is just kinda meh. You can fire it at any direction and it does decent damage and knockback, but the big downside is that is mostly kills opponents opposite of where you're going due to its boomerang effect. This makes traversing the map clunky and the Cross's strength can just not make up for it. You will rarely find yourself picking the Cross, but it's still better than some of the other weapons.

Heaven Sword - Evolved Cross

It's just the Cross with a bigger hitbox and the ability to crit. Same trajectory, same issues. On top of that it needs Clover to evolve, which is just not a good equipment.
Weapons - D Tier
Clock Lancet

A weapon that deals no damage. Need I say more? Honestly though, defensive items in this game are significantly underpowered. Why pick a weapon that freezes enemies for a short time when I can just equip a weapon that deals damage and kills them instead?

Pentagram

The first time you read the Pentagram's text you will think it's OP, until you realize the cooldown is like 2 minutes without upgrades and the killed enemies don't even drop XP gems. Just don't pick this up.

Garlic

Once again, this item is an absolute trap. It seems insanely OP to beginners, but once you realize it does not scale with projectiles and falls off completely in the late-game to the point where it's literally a non-existant item, you will never pick this up ever again

Soul Eater - Evolved Garlic

Incredibly terrible for the same reasons as Garlic. Also needs you to equip Pummarola to evolve, which coincidentally is a D-Tier equipment.

Laurel

One could argue that this item deserves at least C-Tier, but I disagree. It is bad for the same reasons as Clock Lancet, and any other weapon that does damage and is not D-Tier will be a better choice than Laurel.

Lightning Ring

Uncontrollable attacks, low damage, high cooldown, no evolution. Don't use this.

The Whip

Alright just be honest here, was your first run fun when you played The Forest and realized you are a melee character that can't attack vertically? Yeah, me neither. At least this one has an evolution, but just like Garlic, it relies on a terrible equipment and is never worth the effort.

Bloody Tear - Evolved Whip

It's new ability is lifesteal and as we have established, defensive items are bad. The base item is another defensive equipment, making the only point of this evolution the 500 gold you get from the achievement of evolving it for the first time.

Equipment - S Tier
Spinach

This thing increases all of your damage by 50% and is the requirement for the S-Tier evolved weapon Hellfire. You should pick this up in every run, even if you don't have a single Fire Wand.

Duplicator

Even though this can only be upgraded twice, getting 2 additional projectiles on everything is the best damage boost you can get. Just like Spinach, try to get this every run.

Empty Tome

-40% Cooldown to everything means your weapons will fire a lot faster which, again, boosts your damage significantly (we begin to see a theme here). It is also base to the Holy Wand, an S-Tier evolved weapon. Bonus tip: If you play The Library and keep running to the left, you will eventually come across a table with the Empty Tome on it, picking this up grants it to you for the run regardless of your current equipment, which means you can always equip this as a 7th/8th equipment.

Stone Mask

+50% gold gain helps you unlock everything in the game much faster. Just like the Empty Tome, this one is a guaranteed find in The Library, but this time keep running towards the right. It can also be equipped as a 7th/8th equipment so there is no downside to picking this up. Just don't select it from regular level-ups once you unlocked it. Since it has no other benefit, once you unlocked everything you will not need to bother with this item anymore, but until then, you should always pick it up for free.
Equipment - A Tier
Candelabrador

Increasing the area of attacks essentially makes your weapons bigger, and will result in some weapons hitting a lot more. It is overall a solid item to pickup and enables the evolution of Axe into Death Spiral which can be a strong item and synergizes with Candelabrador perfectly.

Spellbinder

Increasing the duration of weapon effects only synergizes with a few weapons, but those all happen to be high-tier weapons. It is also the base for Unholy Vespers, the best item in the game. If you have King Bible, this is a must-pick

Bracer

This is a weird one because technically projectile speed is completely irrelevant in this game, except for 3 weapons: King Bible, Runetracer and Birds. As these three happen to be the go-to weapons for any run, I can not rank this any lower despite only being useful for a few items.
Equipment - B Tier
Wings

Movement Speed isn't actually all that bad. It means you have to spend less time collecting XP gems and can level faster which scales into late-game, and it also helps traversing the map and dodging more effectively. Since you are usually forced into at least one lower tier equipment in a run, wings are a decent choice to go with (especially when playing as Dommario or ExDash).

Equipment - C Tier
Clover

Luck gives you more chests, more drops from light sources and most importantly a chance for a choice of four items on a level-up instead of three. Unfortunately you will hardly ever need more than the 30% luck you can get from the upgrades so the clover is irrelevant most of the time.

Attractorb

Just like clover this one becomes irrelevant once you buy the upgrades. It is somewhat like wings in that it helps you have to run around less to get XP gems, but is way less efficiently at doing so and lacks all the other adcantages movement speed gives you.
Equipment - D Tier
Every defensive equipment sucks

Defense is not the way to go in this game. Go for equipments that do literally anything else and you will be better off.

Crown

Even with no upgrades you will never need the XP boost to max out your build. Don't waste the equipment slot.

Stone Mask

When you don't need money anymore this becomes obsolete (still pick it up in case of future updates, I just thought it's funny to put it here again).

Characters - S Tier
Mortaccio

Although Mortaccio doesn't start with an S-Tier weapon, he is still the best character in the game. An addiotional projectile for every 20 levels up to +3 at level 60 is insane damage scaling. If you want to win, play Mortaccio.

Dommario

Dommario starts with the best weapon in the game and has an insane passive with +40% duration and speed. His drawback is being 40% slower than other characters, which isn't a problem due to his huge damage output at every stage of the run. You can also mitigate his speed penalty by picking up Wings.

Imelda

Imelda starts with one of the best weapons in the game. Her passive allows her to gain XP faster than other characters, which allows her to scale faster than most others.

Exdash

If this is your main you are a chad.

Bonus: MissingNo (Sorry for the bad picture, the Wiki doesn't include him yet)

Stats are randomized every run. Starts with either Axe or Death Spiral. If you do not know how to unlock this character, check my guide on How to Unlock MissingNo. (WIP)
Characters - A Tier
Pasqualina

Starts with an S-Tier weapon and increases projectile speed with her passive which benefits all high-tier weapons. Very strong overall.

Arca

Starts with a strong weapon and his passive reduces cooldown, which makes all your weapons faster. A solid character if you like Fire Wand and Hellfire.
Characters - B Tier
Gennaro

Knifes are a horrible starting weapon but his passive gives him +1 projectile from the start which actually has some potential. Just make sure to get Bracer to evolve your knives and should be able to win runs with him.
Characters - C Tier
Krochi

Cross is a bad starting weapon. His passive gives you up to two revives, but if you know how to play you will never need them, making him a passive-less character with a C-Tier starting weapon. I guess he looks cool though.
Characters - D Tier
Antonio, Porta, Poe and Clerici

All of these share one thing: A D-Tier starting weapon and a passive to boost that weapon. Don't bother playing these characters unless you want a challenge.

Closing thoughts
Wow, this took quite some time to make. Keep in mind that everything in this guide is my personal opinion and should not be taken as the only way to play the game. At the end of the day, have fun playing the characters with the weapons you like and enjoy the game in your own way!

I'm going to adress come of the comments here rather than in the comments itself so the thoughts and my explanation doesn't get lost:

"This Tier-List feels very opinionated" -Yes, I stated that this Tier List is based on my opinion, however, I'm fairly certain it is very close to the actual state of the game

"You undervalue early-game items" -Correct, I do. Getting a little quicker through the early-game is essentially useless for several reasons: 1) You hit fullbuild every run anyways and if you struggle to consistently reach minute 20+ you don't need to be looking for Tier-Lists, you need to farm for upgrades 2) Bosses spawn consistently regardless of your killing speed, making fast kills in the first 10 minutes barely useful due to 10-minute lock on chests (After some testing I can confirm that the game tracks wether a chest was dropped before 10 minutes or after, and chests that were dropped before can not contain evolved weapons. Therefore, getting a lot of xp early to rush your build is not useful if it means sacrificing your weapon slots for something like Garlic or Knife.)

"Garlic is good, you're wrong" -Nope, Garlic sucks. I already explained why in my guide.

This list was really helpful! I was wondering if you have any idea when you might get around to updating it! I really enjoyed reading through it

yeah this is incredibly out of date by now, but i dont really have time to update it because of classes and a personal decline in interest in the game, might eventually come back to it though you never know :)
Cenaris 24 Nov, 2022 @ 6:58am
with all the current changes and additions this needs a serious update but i believe the author has said as much might want to make an SS tier and stick infinite corridor up there :3
Svafa 13 Apr, 2022 @ 8:09pm
@Juice: The Pentagram also has a 10% chance to leave items at level 1. And, I believe the chance also scales with Luck. So, even without any upgrades, it's not guaranteed to destroy all your items.
Juice 22 Mar, 2022 @ 8:10am
If i'm not mistaken, "killing" enemies with the Pentagram does drop xp gems, it just eats them every time until you level it up and give it a %-chance to not destroy items.

Garlic on PoE + Kings Crown + Library is designed for Gold Farming. You can run into far more earlier than you can taking stupid Bible that doesn't start ticking upwards unless you have multiple projectiles AND cooldown AND AOE...

Garlic over "where book?" any day of the week.

I have something to say about garlic

Its fun, not good.
