How to Install Dinstant Worlds:Universe in Windows 10

Ok, after i had some struggle to get this running in Windows 10 i thought i share some knowledge on how to fix it.

Install the Game
Install directX 10 June 2010
Download from Microsoft[www.microsoft.com]
Download the Updated Game Grafiks from the GEM Patch:
Download GEM 2.4 from moddb
Go to your install Folder and overwrite the Images Folder with the one from the GEM_v2.4.zip
Example Path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Distant Worlds Universe\images\
Thx to mollusk for rephrasing this one.
As GEM was not done for Universe you also need to download this file:
Download Fix from matrixgames Forum[www.matrixgames.com]
Replace the shading.png in the Install Folder with the one from the zip file
Example Path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Distant Worlds Universe\images\environment\overlays\shadow\
Disable the Intro Movie with editing the startup.ini file in the Main Game Folder and change "playmovie 1" to "playmovie 0"
Example Path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Distant Worlds Universe\Startup.ini
right click the DistantWorlds.exe in that Folder and goto "Properties" than "Compability" and then "change high DPI-Settings"
in that Window check both boxes, the upper one choose "When i open the Program" the Lower one "System (Extended)"

Thats it, enjoy the game on Windows 10 in natural Resolution with updated Icons and normal size UI.

tested with Windows 10 21H2

Thank you for the guide! The files downloaded from Microsoft can be saved anywhere or even in the Microsoft folder in AppData.

Minor correction to a nice guide. The GEM package only replaces some of the images, not all, and if any are missing you'll get a crash when starting the game. So a correction to step 4:

"Go to your install Folder and replace the Images Folder with the one from the GEM_v2.4.zip"

This should read:

"Go to your install Folder and overwrite the Images Folder with the one from the GEM_v2.4.zip"

The logs to see the cause of a crash can be found at:
<your Documents folder>\my games\Distant Worlds Universe\DW_CrashDump.txt

Awesome, thank you so much!

Just bought the game yesterday and couldn't wait to start playing - but it didn't work out of the box.

Also, thanks for including the mods - that's pretty neat :)
