First I suggest that you read "Tailoring for Beginners" if you have 0 skill in tailoring. Read each skill book as you come to each even number of levels to increase speed that you level. There are also some home video VHS tapes out there that will help train your tailoring skills.

Thanks to Bing chiling, they are called Granny Nani and Tailoring 101 - they are HOME VHS tapes, so you are most likely to find them in houses.

No Mods Required.
Leveling Tailoring
The best way to level tailoring that I have discovered (there may be better ones) is to find yourself a destroyed jacket, or denim shirt. (Essentially a piece of clothing with a lot of sections on it that is destroyed).

This item will have a lot of holes in it, and thus great for doing patch work. To repair the item follow these steps:

1. Have the item in your main inventory.
2. Right click on it and select "inspect"
3. Right click on the holes and select "patch all holes"
4. Right click the top patch and remove all patches.
5. Rinse and repeat.

After you level up to 1 You should be able to also now "Add Padding" to the item and thus add step 4.5

What you will need is a needle, thread, and ripped sheets.

To gather thread rip up tons of zombie clothes. The higher your tailoring the more frequent you will find these.

At level 8 tailoring you can "fully restore" a piece of clothing. I put that in quotes because if the clothing is very very damaged, "fully restoring it" will not completely fill the condition bar. Simply use the same type of material that the item of clothing is made from (if you get sheets from ripping it, use sheets, denim for denim and leather for leather).
Making the armor
There's three types of armor that I have found so far ( i am tailoring 7 as of making this guide)

Ripped Sheet Padding
Denim Padding
Leather Padding

To get denim or leather you will need a pair of scissors in your inventory.

To armor the piece of clothing I think you need tailoring level 2. Right click on the item you wish to armor, select Add Padding to all spots, and choose the type of padding you wish to add.

At tailoring level 7 leather padding will add 14 scratch and 7 bite defense to each section of the clothing. (These numbers increase with tailoring level.)

At level 10 Tailoring you will get 10% Bite, 20% Scratch, and 10% bullet protection for leather padding. You can do this with any piece of clothing that can be repaired. (Yes that includes socks! that normally have no protection, now they can!)

I would like to clarify for ItzaLeaf, you can actually get threads from clothing under level 1. That is in fact how you can get XP from clothing you rip up. The issue is that under level 1 you do not have anywhere near a decent chance of getting said threads to level up the skill.

Also, you can get threads from ripping clothing based on your skill, which is why taking the "tailor" perk can be worth it since you seem to need a minimum of level 1 skill to get threads.

Tailoring is low key really powerful, if you consider things like long johns that you can wear under alot of other clothings and has like 10 slots available for padding, you can get some really high numbers of scratch and bite defense.

Yeah it certainly does help!

Good guide, tailoring is underrated, I have used it in my most recent playthroughs and however little the protection, I feel like it has saved me many times.
