KV-8 (Object 228), a heavy flamethrower tank of the USSR.

The idea to create a heavy flamethrower tank appeared before the war, in the spring of 1941, immediately after designer I.A. Aristov developed the flamethrower ATO-41. The weapon was tested and, having shown good results, went into serial production. The flamethrowing range of "ATO-41" with standard mixture of fuel oil and kerosene was 60-70 meters and with viscous mixture - up to 110 meters.

The plan was to put "ATO-41" in a rotating turret, but it did not fit in - it was interfered by the standard 76-mm cannon "F-32". It was decided to replace it by a compact 45-mm tank gun of the 30s model, and to hide from the enemy the weakness of the gun a decorative cover-tube 76-caliber was put on the gun.

As a result KV-8 differed from the production KV-1 in armament. On this time on board of the tank there was a flamethrower ATO-41 with 107 primers and five tanks with combustible mixture: two in the turret, one in the fighting compartment and two in the compartment of transmission. The total volume of tanks was 960 liters. The vehicle was to be serviced by a crew of 4.
