German Heavy Cruiser Graf Spee

Here is the heavy cruiser Graf Spee of the Kriegsmarine.

Admiral Graf Spee, named after Admiral Maximilian von Spee who was killed during the Battle of the Falkland Islands in WW1, was a Deutschland-class heavy cruiser (or "Panzerschiff" by the Germans or "Pocket Battleship" by the British). The class had 6 very large 280mm guns that were designed to sink enemy cruisers and merchant ships. She participated in 5 non-intervention patrols of Spain during the Spanish Civil War. She was also present at the coronation Review of King George VI to represent Germany. She was deployed in the South Atlantic at the time WW2 was declared to sink enemy merchant shipping once war was declared. She would end up sinking 9 merchant vessels. On December 13th, she encounter the 3 British cruisers Ajax (Light), Achilles (Light), and Exeter (Heavy) in what became the Battle of the River Plate, the first naval battle of WW2. Graf Spee inflicted heavy damage to the British ships, but was also damaged and went into Montevideo, Uruguay for repairs. With false reports that a British task force would be arriving in the harbor, the ships commander, Hans Langsdorff, ordered to sail the ship in the River Plate estuary and scuttled the ship. Most of the wreck was scrapped in 1942-1943, but some parts of the wreck are still at the bottom of the estuary.
