A Guide to AoE 2's language / community terminology

This guide is aimed towards new players who don't know what AoE 2 players mean when they talk about DauT castles, being housed etc.

The guide is incomplete and new terms will be added over time.

Common gameplay related terms
Term
Meaning
Being housed
Being at your current population cap. To increase it, you have to build houses
Being pop capped
Being at the match's total population limit
Laming
Deliberately hurting your opponent's economy, especially in the early stages of a game by e.g. stealing/killing their sheep
DauT castle
A castle getting destroyed that either unfinished or freshly built. Named after pro player DauT.
xx into yy
The strategy/build order you follow that includes the usage of two unit types, e.g. Scouts into Knights
Being idle
Units/Production buildings not being tasked to do anything at the moment
xx-line
A base unit + its upgrades. E.g. the Archer or militia line
Quick wall
As the name suggests, quickly building up walls to keep enemy units away. Commonly used with Palisades and Houses
Luring
Using a villager to attack a wild animal with more food than ususal (e.g. Boar) in order to make it follow the villager to the Town Center
Trash unit
A unit that costs no gold thus being a good option in late game
Force drop-off
Ordering villagers to quickly drop their resources into the nearest building and immediately start to work again. Especially useful in early game when gathering food from boars since it takes a long time for the villager to drop off the food by itself. Also required for civilizations like the Chinese and Aztecs.
Stop micro
Microing military units with the stop command (Default Hotkey: G)
Split micro
Switching between Line and Flank formation to dodge projectiles, typically Onager shots
Counter unit
A unit which is especially strong vs. another unit. Common counters: Spearman → Cavalry / Skirmisher → Archer
Floating resources
To have unused resources, usually hoarding them without spending
Deer pushing
A technique to make a deer move towards your own base by sending a scout behind said deer

Here are some terms that refer to strategies:

Meaning
Trush
Tower rush - a strategy typically used by Koreans which consists of sending your villagers towards the enemy and building towers inside the base
Douche
Deleting your Town Center in the early stage of a game and rebuild it near the opponent's base. This strategy is typically used by the Persians.
Fast Castle
Advancing to Feudal Age with 24+ villagers being split up on Wood, Food and Gold in order to "skip" that Age to go to Castle Age as quick as possible. There are also very tight versions such as the Steppe Lancer Rush (aka. Morley Rush) where you play 22+2.
xx+y (e.g.) 22+2
The amount of villagers you make in each age before advancing. In above mentioned example, you make 22 villagers in Dark Age, followed by another 2 in Feudal Age
Drush
Dark Age rush. Attacking your opponent in Dark Age with militia. The goal isn't neccesarily to finish your opponent but rather to distract them to buy yourself time.
Mush
Monk rush. Overwhelming your opponent by using many Monks, usually with Aztecs.
Turtling
Super defensive strategy which consists of walling yourself in
Booming
Being fully focused on your economy and eventually launching an attack in later stages of a game. Goes hand in hand with Turtling.

Meaning
Infantry
Foot soliders, typically divided into melee and ranged units. Please note that the ingame technology tree strictly refers to melee units as "Infantry" while ranged units are refered to as "Archers".
Cavarly
Mounted and thus highly-mobile units, typically divided into melee (Scouts, Knights) and ranged cavalry (Cavalry Archer)
Siege
Units mainly with the purpose to destroy other buildings like rams and trebuchets but also anti-infantry units such as Scorpions and Mangonels
Naval
Ships

When playing a 3v3 or 4v4, these are players that are placed at the outer starting positions

ThxDE
Used when AoE 2 DE isn't working (again)
Hun war
Two players playing against each other with huns. Was very popular during the days of The Conquerors, AoE 2's first expansion
