How to run the game? It goes for ALL old games.

The answer is simple: Install nGlide.
http://www.zeus-software.com/downloads/nglide
In the setup menu press "Detect Available Cards"
Then chose the nGlide from the list.
Enjoy!

Hilariously useless advice.
Install freespace open.

Even if the nglide way works for you, you're missing out on 20 years plus of high res models and lighting effects that the community made.

You're an idiot if you do it the nglide way and don't install freespace open.

My windows 8 laptop can't run it, but my windows 7 desktop can, using the little detect cards option on the main volition pop up. No third party software. Don't know why windows 8 doesn't like it, but it's also close to 20 years old at this point, I don't think windows 8 and newer programmers expected anyone to boot up a program as old as this. I still love this game, downloading Freespace 2 and hoping maybe that will run on the laptop. will report back.

I have that option too and it doesn't help any. Nor does it keep the revised setting when u next try to restart the game.

I dunno what nGlide is but i had an option to "detect availibe cards" option in the launch menu for the game without downloading 3rd party software.

Does it fix the flickering effect as well?
