Software
Before creating a custom spray, you'll need Gimp, a picture editing software.
  • PC[download.cnet.com]
  • MAC[download.cnet.com]

Once downloaded, follow the steps that appear on the screen to complete the installation.
I'd put a shortcut on your desktop for easy access.

For the image to work, it has to have the following properties (which will be edited using Gimp):
  1. The mode has to be set to grayscale.
  2. The picture has to be in black and white.
  3. The dimensions have to be 64x64
  4. The pixels have to be 75 x 75
Getting the Picture
To save yourself from the hassle of making the picture in black and white, when searching through Google for your image, set your Search Tools to "Black and White" under "Color" and, if you can, also select "Line Drawing" under "Type."

Save the picture.
Right click on the picture > Save image as > Save it as a .png tag to your desktop.
Opening the Image
Open image in Gimp.
Once in Gimp, the rest is simple.

Here you will set the width and height both to 64.
You will set the X and Y resolution to 75.
Then push scale.
DO NOT FREAK OUT IF THE IMAGE IS REALLY TINY. IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE.
Inverting Colors
The next step is optional depending on your prefrence.
Because it only reads what is in white, everything in black will not show. With most pictures I recommend inverting the colors. To do this you:

Click colors > Invert
Click Image > Mode > Grayscale
Saving
Saving.

Click File > Export As...

In the top left there should be a place to type the "Name:" of your image.
Name it yourimagename.bmp
The name has to end with .bmp or it won't work.
Make sure you are saving the file to your desktop.

Click Export and another window will appear and click Export again.

Go to your desktop where your image is saved.
Moving to Spray Folder
Right Click on your image and press cut.
Next you need to go to your Steam folder.
Steam > SteamApps > common > Half-Life > valve > Logos > Right Click in an empty space and paste your image
Selecting your image in Counter-Strike
Open Counter-Strike 1.6
Go to options
Under the multiplayer tab you should see Spraypaint Image
Click the dropdown arrow and select the spray you have just created
THEN MAKE SURE YOU PUSH OK CLOSING OUT THE OPTIONS MENU.
Now you are ready to use your spray (Push "T" during gameplay)
Glitches
Because this method messes around with the spray files indirectly, whereas the tempdecal.wad is a direct reading of the file, there are a few things that might happen.

1. You're picture will be blurry. For this I suggest picking a picture with very thick black lines if possible. I used one with thin lines and it turned out alright but not the best.

2. If your picture doesn't have any margin space around the edges, the picture will cut off and appear on the other side of the spray.

3. Dotted lines may appear on the top and bottom of your spray. I have no idea why. If you ever figure out a solution please tell me. This however can be avoided by making your entire background of your picture white so the spray color will paint "over" the dotted lines.

Here is an example of what I am talking about:

Looks like:

It looks blurrier than it actually is because I zoomed in on it. But you can see the dotted lines on the bottom and how the lines are very thin.
You can also see how the right side of the burger got cut off and moved to the left.

**If you are still having difficulties, send me the picture you would like to use as a spray and I can take care of it for you.**
FAQ
Even though I changed the logo to my custom one, it still shows the default lambda logo. Why?
  • Make sure you are not connected to a server when you are selecting your spray. It won't update to your most recently selected spray. Go to the Main Menu Screen and select it there.
  • Some servers actually disable custom sprays in a way where clients can't even use it. In this case, a small lambda spray will appear.

@Das Huhn Interesting theory. I tried it and it didn't work. However, I did find something interesting. The PPI (not DPI, same values but different terms [read here] [www.andrewdaceyphotography.com]) on the default logos that comes with the game is 71.9836 x 71.9836 ppi. WEIRD HUH?
