Planet Zoo Guest View Radius
Por alexis_taylor92
So I'm making this a new post to make sure everyone whose interested sees it. It is my pleasure to announce (and not only because it was tedious as hell) that I have finished my work. This linked spreadsheet contains, for all 87 habitat animals, at what distances guests find the view Good (green 🙂), Neutral (yellow/orange 😐), and Bad (red 🙁). This wasn't particularly difficult work, but it was time consuming. On maximum speed, pausing whenever an animal got moved to a different distance from the fence, to check and double check my work took over 200 in-game years. I hoped to have this out a bit sooner, but I did not fully realize the arduousness of the undertaking I'd signed myself up for.

I want to insert an example here so that everything is as clear as possible. Let's say you're looking at the common peafowl, which has a good view at <12m, a neutral view at 12-24m, and a bad view at >24m. This means that you can make the enclosure 12m deep and always get a good view, the animal cannot stand on top of the fence and thus will always be closer than 12m to the guests (barring an escape). If you place the fence at the 24m mark the view will either be good or neutral (based on the luck of where your peafowl chooses to stand at a particular moment and which peafowl your idiot guests decide to gawk at). If you place the fence back further than 24m then you open yourself up to the risk of negative reviews.

If you're curious about my methodology it involved building a 20m wide and super deep habitat, then within that habitat placing the animal in a 6m x 4m glass box (made with glass wall pieces) and moving that box back in 4m increments and observing the guest reaction. I used only female animals as, first off, they take up less space when there is sexual dimorphism within the species; and second because it seems with some species they may have a smaller "view radius". It was one of the most boring things I have ever done considering the sheer number of animals that had to be tested in this way. I am grateful to be done with this project until the next DLC.

If anyone wants to post this elsewhere no need to ask permission, I would love for every player to get to see this to help them better design their zoos so feel free to share it to discord servers or wherever else; all I ask is that you note that I (atiggerx33) am the author and not try to pass off the work as your own. This also applies to translating my spreadsheet into various languages.

If you find any errors in the spreadsheet, please let me know so they can be corrected. I require a screenshot of the 'guest review', along with a screenshot of your habitat. It would be best if you could just quickly put in some 4m wall pieces of alternating color to quickly/easily measure out the distance in the screenshot.

Alright guys, without further ado here it is: Planet Zoo Guest View Spreadsheet [www.dropbox.com]

This was copy/pasted from my post on reddit where I am atiggerx33. I tried to use the same username on Steam, but apparently 'tigger' is too close to the n-word and it triggered the profanity filters. A bit frustrating, but I completely understand why Steam has this policy.

<12m/12-24m/>24m
I made these workshop items using 4m recolorable plaster tiles showing the view radius for animals in the <12m/12-24m/>24m group.

I tested it with a common ostrich and a 12m x 4m stretch of path (I tried doing 4m x 4m but guests kept standing in silly places to view the ostrich and gave flawed results, but I figure most people won't be making viewing areas smaller than 12m long).

So here's the link to a 180° view.

And here's the link to a 360° view

Nice work and it does look like it took a lot of time. One question- Any data regarding if the views of good/neutral/bad change if the guest is inside the habitat?

Oh wow! Thank you for taking the time to test and compile this data! This is a fantastic spreadsheet to help with habitat design. Fabulous work

Also I did some further testing and height does not seem to impact the view radius. I elevated a path by 8m and tested with a few animals, but the 'view review' still decreased at exact same distance as when the guests were level to the animals.
