Deep Impact achievement using the gravity cannon
By Helix
The Deep Impact achievement is notoriously hard to get. Guides usually advise to ram into Giant's Deep at very high speed, sometimes with FPS capping involved. However this is not foolproof and not fun to do; you could waste a lot of time.

There is however a very cool and probably intended way to get Deep Impact, involving no FPS capping whatsoever. The idea is to use the gravity cannon located on Brittle Hollow.

Step by step
  1. Start by taking a 9~10 minutes nap at the campfire at the beginning of the loop. This is because we want Brittle Hollow to catch up to Giant's Deep. Brittle Hollow's orbit is closer to the sun so the planet completes its revolution faster. The starting positions of both planets is no good for what we intend to do. Taking the nap transports us to the point in time when the Sun, Brittle Hollow and Giant's Deep are about to be aligned.

  2. Make your way to the gravity cannon in Brittle Hollow and call back the Nomai ship by putting the ball on the right side.

  3. Enter the Nomai ship and check your map. You should wait until Brittle Hollow catches up to Giant's Deep.

  4. At this point exit your map and keep your eyes on the Nomai Ship's crosshair. Giant's Deep should be appearing soon. When it passes in the center of the crosshair, launch the ship by putting the ball on the left side. IMPORTANT: people commenting on the guide highlighted the importance of the timing of launching the Nomai shuttle. Try and reproduce the video as much as possible.

  5. If timed correctly, you're now on your way to Giant's Deep and you will pierce the current on arrival and thus get the achievement. You have nothing more to do during the trip. Do not touch the ship controls!
The situation at the end of step 3
Below is the situation you should aim for at the end of step 3. The yellow arrows represent the velocity vectors of the planets. Brittle Hollow is about to catch up to Giant's Deep. Important: do not fire the cannon at this point! You should fire the cannon when Giant's Deep is right in the center of the crosshair of the ship.

@Aurora Cavelier the destruction of Brittle Hollow is random I believe, so if you're un lucky, the cannon is not there anymore when you need it
i think i waited too long because the gravity canon fell into the black hole and then my character spasmed out and hit all the walls inside the ship and died

you may not believe this but i flew under statue island and my game bugged and gave me the achievement without me ever breaking the current

Got the achievement on one try with this method! Thanks!! Here's one burnt marshmallow for you.

Yup. I got this achievement “as intended” completely on accident (well besides the fact that I purposely shot myself into giants deep) while playing, and this is exactly how I did it.

The way I did it was that I waited for the huricanes to shoot one of the pieces of land in space, and then I landed under that island so when it got back on the planet I got automaticaly under the current. I took me some time to understand what was going on with those hurricanes, butturns out that if you just keep hovering at the edge of the event horizon of the planet you will spot one of the islands floating around, just land underneath it and you gonna make it.

Would have been a cool way to do it but I somehow keep crashing into the probe launcher debris every single time, I don't get it. Doing like in the videos seems hard, especially since it also depends on the FOV and such.

I got mine using my ship going about 12,000 m/s

Yeah an earlier comment reported that as well. It seems that the timing when you launch the shuttle is important and has to be close to what is shown in the video.
