Act 1, Puzzle 3 (for example): 1st (from the left) 3/2 Ant kills Loose Tail (0/5 damage), 2nd same thing but now there's a creature to the right (0/5), 3rd Flyer hits directly because the new creature can't block it (2/5), 4th 3/2 Ant hits directly (5/5 damage)
idk if that's ever explained or you're just supposed to notice it but it took me a while and becomes more important to know as you go. Most guides don't come with explanations or non-obvious tips so I hope that helps.

I think what got me is that this is the first puzzle that makes you think about card effects. Bifurcated strike is simple to understand, but am I correct to say the reason my "solution" only gives 2/5 is because the skink will lose its tail and move right, blocking the 3-attack card? I don't know the movement rule for that card yet.
The puzzles assume that it is your turn, and you have not hit the bell yet. The challenge is: where would you want the cards/tiles to be so that you can win when you press the bell? To know this, it will help if you can predict what the card effects will do, although the very first puzzles don't require you to do this. Without that, you'll be stuck mostly brute-forcing it, or using this guide. Thanks to the author, by the way!
The 1-2 card's ability causes all owned crystals to become bombs, so killing the 0-1 crystal destroys the 3-2 card and lets your 5-5 card do 5 damage
