  1. I thought it would be a good idea to show everyone all the mods of Max Payne 2 I've played over the years in 1 place for quick access. Most of them are from Moddb.
  2. In this guide, for each mod, you will find mod overviews, download links and screenshots, and some features.
  3. The section numbers of this guide are just there to help me organize the guide easier, this is not a popularity contest, just a compilation of mods I would highly recommend people trying out.
  4. I will try to add as many images as possible to make sure everyone can check out the features of each mod before downloading.
  5. Some of the mods have their own ways to install, so I will add the authors' notes in the mod descriptions as well.
  6. This guide will be updated frequently, if anyone knows any other good mods for Max Payne 2, please reply in the comments section, I will add your name along side the mod title.

How to install Max Payne 2 Mods
I'm using the mod Mona The Assassin on Moddb as the example for this quick tutorial
  1. For each individual mod, the mod overviews link will take you to a page like this



  2. Same thing with the download link



  3. Once you finished downloading the mod, locate the mod files and extract them



  4. Most of the time, the modders have already prepared a README.



  5. If the mods you downloaded don't have the installation guide, you can follow the README from Mona The Assassin. It can be applied to every other Max Payne 2 Mods in this guide


Steps to follow:
  1. Library / Home / Search "max"
  2. Right click on Max Payne 2 / Manage / Browse Local Files



  3. Copy the mod_title.mp2m to the game directory, the mod_movie.bik to the movies folder




  4. When launching the game, pick the mod you want to play in Choose Customized Game, then press Play

01 - Mona The Assassin
Okay, let's start rolling with our first mod. This will serve as the template for the entire guide. Don't worry, it's easy to check each of them out.



Descriptions:
- Mona Sax is a contract-killer, a job at which she excels. When a Mafia boss sends his army of mobsters after her, assaulting her hideout and forcing her to flee through the city streets, it gets personal and real nasty.
- From an abandoned asylum, through the suburban streets of the Big Apple, to the Mafia social club, unleash her destructive power and make them regret to have ever messed with Mona.
- Mona: The Assassin is an unofficial Max Payne 2 expansion featuring 5 original, action-packed levels.

02 - 7th Serpent: Crossfire

Descriptions:
7th Serpent Crossfire is a third-person shooter modification for the Max Payne 2 game engine thrusting players into a world of corruption, secrecy and vengeance as they control Damon Pryce - the main character - who has been subjected to experimental testing and is left to his own devices in order to extract the truth from those who keep it from him.

03 - 7th Serpent: Genesis (Sequel)

Descriptions:
- Sequel to 7th Serpent: Crossfire, Genesis puts you into the skin of Vincent Petero, the 7th Serpent, a killing machine engineered to perform the Serpent Industries’ dirty work and keeping its enemies at bay.
- One of them is H.A.B.I.T. – Humans Against Biological Intrusive Technologies, actively fighting against the deeds of Serpent Industries, or at least what leaked out to the public throughout the years.
- Along with another Serpent prototype, you are sent into the Conference Center, where the heads of the organization are having a meeting, with a simple goal: making sure they can no longer slow down the progress of SI’s researches

04 - Max Payne Chronicles

Descriptions:
- Taking place between the stories of the first and second Max Payne games, Max Payne's Chronicles let you playing as Max Payne when he joins the NYPD, and starts his detective job.
- On each of the 4 chapters, you will receive a new case to solve. Each case is different, but also linked in a way you will try to find out, but new questions will keep spawning until the last and final reveal.

05 - M:I - New Dawn

Descriptions:
- When Major Sean Dickens’ F-15 crashes over Utah, everything looks like an accident. However, as the wreck is recovered, Dickens is gone, and with him the F-15’s deadly cargo: a new generation warhead.
- Ethan Hunt’s mission is clear: the warhead has to be recovered before Dickens is able to sell it, and Dickens, along with the possible buyer, a former Russian general, with unknown intentions, have to be eliminated.
- However, all too soon Hunt realizes that things aren’t as they seem, and suddenly finds himself right in the line of fire. In his quest to gain answers, Hunt hits upon a conspiracy that puts doubts upon the trustworthiness of his own ranks, and change everything he believed in.
- He has nothing to rely on. And nobody left to trust. But whoever is trying to deceive him, they have obviously forgotten with whom they have to deal with

06 - Payne Evolution Sprut

Descriptions:
- The story based on the “La piovra” (“The Octopus”/”Спрут”) TV series about the Mafia. Max Payne helps the INTERPOL with investigation about medical frauds because it’s somehow connected with the Russian Mafia, especially with Vlad Lem. But how? That’s what Max must find out.
- This mod mostly was known only in Russia and in some parts of East Europe before. “Pirates” did a lot of illegal CD copies with repacked Max Payne 2 and Sprut modification, and sold them to people as “Max Payne 3” or just “official Max Payne 2 addon”. Original developers of “Sprut”: unknown.
- Mod has new 7 levels. Full walkthrough takes about 2 hours on easy difficulty.

- Elements Of Style (EOS) should be very satisfying to the many people that have found Max Payne 2's original gameplay to be very flat and/or stale.

10 - Hall Of Mirrors

Descriptions:
- In a futuristic world, a strict regime has eliminated war by suppressing emotions: books, art and music are strictly forbidden and feeling is a crime punishable by death.
- Cleric John Preston is a top ranking government agent responsible for destroying those who resist the rules. When he misses a dose of Prozium, a mind-altering drug that hinders emotion, Preston, who has been trained to enforce the strict laws of the new regime, suddenly becomes the only person capable of overthrowing it.
- The modification is loosely based on the movie "Equilibrium" with the main focus of the work being based upon implementing a new combat system similar to the "gun kata" seen in some of the action scenes of the movie.
- The "Gun Kata" allows the player to take on several adversaries at the same time with dual weapons and gun them down in unison.

Descriptions:
- a short and cool Half-Life 2 Mod using Max Payne 2 engine

Installation:
STEP 1: Install Weapon Patch to your Max Payne 2 game. (If you installed it before, skip this step.)
STEP 2: Copy "Santego Special Unit.mp2m" to your game directory.
STEP 3: Run Max Payne 2 and select "Santego Special Unit" as a custom game.
STEP 4: Play.

15 - Kung Fu Evolution 2.0

Descriptions:
- 9 new story levels.
- 16 characters with unique fighting styles. One use katana while another uses a staff, and the rest is kung fu mad men: Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Neo, Vergil, Wolverine, Wesker, and Tao to name a few. Most of these characters will have alternative costumes.
- Mix and match some 20-30 individual moves, including Punch strings, quick and jump kicks, combo enders.
- Dance around enemies with sidesteps, dodges, blocks, and parries.
- Advanced kung fu enemies can block your moves; and use their own variety of offense and defense moves to destroy you.

17 - Max Payne 2 Chow Yun Fat Edition

Descriptions:
The main features of this mod are:
  1. Models/skins of Chow as he appeared in A Better Tomorrow 2, Hard Boiled (Warehouse and Hospital), Replacement Killers (intro nightclub scene), and The Killer (end church shootout).
  2. Sampled gunfire sounds from Hard Boiled (shotgun in hospital/warehouse scene, uzi from tea house scene) and Beretta sound from The Killer
  3. All other parts of the game are untouched other than increasing the rate of fire on all automatic weapons

This is definitely one of the best mods I've played recently XD

Author - DeXiaZ's Descriptions:
  1. Inspired by Crack-Life mod. I decided to create similar stupid crazy mod for Max Payne 2.
  2. I've found a way to edit original levels from Max Payne 2, i.e. change textures and scripts. So I decided to do random replacements in funny way. Based on Cinema 2.0 mod by TerminX.
  3. YOU NEED THE WEAPON PATCH BY ANTIEVIL
  4. Features:
    - Revisited levels from original Max Payne 2
    - New/old weapons - minigun, rocket launcher, flamethrower (requires weapon patch), etc.
    - New models (mostly belong to AntiEvil, few taken from The Silver's Payne Evolution)
    - New music for EACH edited level.
    - New music for bullet time (RULES OF NATURE!)
    - New scripts situations (you can kill everyone in NYPD level, for example)
    - New final boss battle

Descriptions x Features:
  • In the mod, you can play as Dark Wizard, Slayer, Steel Samurai and 2 versions of Blade on Max Payne 2 levels or 12 completely new ones created for this mod.
  • Unpack the archive to your game folder, launch the game and select VampireSlayer_2_0_beta in the mod selection menu
  • To play you need to select the character from the menu and the level.
  • To use special moves of a character you need to select a "Special moves" weapon.
  • To make a special move you need to press movement buttons to one of 8 directions and press shoot-dodge button
  • There are wall-moves (you need to jump forward on the wall for it), melee moves (select melee weapon and press melee attack button) and some characters have crouch moves (press crouch)
  • In the archive you can also find the script (story of the mod) and an unfinished version of the prologue video.

Skin x Camera Options:

TIPS
  1. Recommended resolution: 1024x768
  2. To use attachments on weapons, select "Grenade" as the secondary weapon and use it.
  3. To use katanas when playing as Deadpool, select "Knife" as the 2nd weapon and press "Secondary attack + WASD"
  4. To bullet dodge when you play as Deadpool, select "Knife" as the 2nd weapon and press "Secondary attack + Shoot-dodge + WASD"
  5. Press JUMP when you play as Nick Fury, to Kick your enemy
  6. In Aiming mode press "Jump+W+A" or "Jump+W+D" to lean left and right
  7. If the game crashes on loading Part2 Chapter3 or Part3 Chapter8, select those levels from the level-selector in the menu, and after that reload your previous savegame.

29 - Payne Effects 3

Descriptions:
- The purpose of the mod is to make Max Payne 2 more realistic and tactical, but at the same time to give a dramatic and cinematographic feel to the shootouts.
- Version 3 is totally new, with a lot of key features that will dramatically improve the original gameplay, and also with new spectacular unique effects

USEFUL TIPS before playing:
  1. To play this mod properly be sure to have a pretty decent pc (and highest settings)
  2. Disarm an enemy to heal yourself a bit (the closer you are the more you heal)
  3. Tap the Crouch key or perform a Slide move to a wall to enter the Cover stance
  4. Jump when shooting to perform the Slide moves (only forward have slow-motion)
  5. Shoot when jumping to perform a Flying slide Kick (can knock down enemies)
  6. Perform a Knife kill to gain the "Eagle Eye" secondary weapon (the old "Action")
  7. To use the "Eagle Eye" weapon simply keep the secondary shoot key pressed
  8. Don't use bullet-time when performing the "Eagle Eye" move to avoid boring slowdowns
VIDEO MEMORY ERROR FIX:
  • According to the Original Max Payne 2 Readme if you encounter a "video memory error" just
    write -developer and -disable3dpreloads in the Target section of the shortcut proprieties.
  • It must look like this: "C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Max Payne 2\MaxPayne2.exe" -developer -disable3dpreloads

30 - Absent Grave

Descriptions:
- Absent Grave is a zombie modification that brings tons of gory zombie-killing action to Max Payne 2. You play as a bad-ass soldier with a deadly arsenal of weapons including a double-barreled shotgun and a chainsaw.
- Gameplay consists of survival levels where you will have to try and stay alive for as long as you can against hordes of undead.

Notes


In order to successfully run the mod, you need to choose these settings for the game:
- Texture resolution: High
- Pixel Shaders: Off
- High Detail Ragdolls: On

Cheats
The problem with this mod is you don't have enough ammo to kill the zombies. Also, they respawn constantly so this mod is better to play with cheats on.

Follow the steps below to access the cheats:

  1. Library / Search "max" / Right Click on Max Payne 2 / Properties
  2. Insert "-developer -developerkeys" in the launch options of General tab
  3. In game (not in the menu), press "~" to bring up the dev console then type in "coder" to unlock all weapons, infinite HP and ammo
  4. Now you are ready to kill some zombies just for fun.

Descriptions:
- Battle Tactics 2 is a turn-based modification which means that you take turn with the AI. Each turns lasts about 10 seconds and after that is next one's turn.
- The loop continues as long as you're alive or all the enemies are dead, or you have escorted the hostage in hostage rescue game mode.

34 - Hellsing Mod Part 2 Regeneration

Descriptions:
- This mod is hard, you have 3 manual saves in each level, use them sparingly.
- Part 2 takes place two month after Part 1. Hellsing corp got infos about a man called “Thunder Snake”. He´s delivering weapons to Hojo to arm an unstoppable freak army.
- Alucard has been ordered to find Thunder Snake, kill him and destroy all weapons. Without any weapons, Hojo´s army is just dog food. But Hojo seems to be around there somewhere and with him some new threat.

35 - The Big Reveal

Descriptions:
- If you have played Max Payne Chronicles from Corwin before, then this mod is a must play.
- 6 Max Payne 2 Maps in one Package. Author: Corwin.
- After the secret end of Max Payne 2, Max wake up in jail, in a questioning room, and is rescued by other prisoners who are trying to escape (the cleaners he haven't killed during the game).
- His only chance to discover what happened between the Manor and his awakening is to get out of the jail alive and find Mona. She must have the answers to his questions.

My account got hacked? What to do?
[UPDATED 15-03-2022]

Okay, my account recently got hacked by a Russian person. How do I know this? When I can't log in to steam yesterday after several attempts, I got suspicious, by clicking on I forgot my password, I saw my recovery email was changed to ****.ru.
Luckily, I was able to get my account back through Steam support and I will include this quick tutorial on my guides so everyone knows what to do and prepares for the worst. From what I've seen, a lot of people have become victims of these hacks recently.

This is my message to the unknown hacker:
"I know the war is affecting everyone in Russia, but ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, people also worked hard to have money to buy games just so they can get away from life for a little while.
- There are no excuses for your behavior, you just got greedy and want easy money. What were you trying to do? Were you going to sell this steam account to the highest bidder for some quick buck?
- If you ask people for help, just maybe, someone kind enough will provide assistance. But by trying to steal from others, you're just making it worse for your own people.
- You don't want to get isolated even more now, especially when you need help the most. So please be better and do something else, something productive with your life."

Anyway, let's get back to the main topic.
- STEP 1: Click on Help / Steam Support
- STEP 2: Choose My Account
- STEP 3: Choose Data related to your steam account
- STEP 4: Scroll down, choose Contact steam support
- STEP 5: Provide the details so Steam staff can help you out
  • You might want to provide more proof to the staff to prove you're the actual owner of the account.
  • In my case, I even made a 2nd account just to ask them for their assistance.
  • I got the password to log in to my account from steam directly, just 1 DAY, what a miracle. But that might not be the case for you, I know it sucks, but please be patient.

I GOT MY ACCOUNT BACK, WHAT TO DO NOW?
In this section, I will share with you what I do to protect my account. If you guys know more, please comment and let everyone know. I will include your name as the original author here.
  1. Click on Steam/Settings. Change your password, email contact address, add more security layers to your account.
  2. The passwords you change should be kept offline, you can write them down in a notebook or something like that.
  3. Delete auto-fill forms if you're using browsers like Chrome, Opera... to log in to steam. I used this to write steam guides but now no more. I think that was what got me hacked. I never clicked on any odd links sent by strangers and somehow, I still got hacked.

A great set of Max Payne 2 mods with an actual detailed description! Thanks for the time invested! Sad to hear about the account being hacked :(. Have you got Steam Guard Mobile installed and used before it was hacked? It provided the MFA that's required on each new device login...
