First step: begin generating power
By no_name_
For those of you that haven't been able to even start generating power at the beginning of the game (like I did), here are some steps to get your first power unit up and running.

Start your first power unit
1.- Begin your game (simplified mode), before pressing the play button on the top right side of the screen, builld your power station through the build menu on the bottom-right corner of the screen. Anywhere will do since the available space has the necessary utilities connected.

2.- Get fuel, either buy 50 wood from the lower right screen resource menu or cut down the forest with the dynamite-like button that's on the build menu just after the resource one.

3.- Research the only available tech at this point from the pause menu (ESC key), it's just above the start icon: Artisanal Assembly. Assign resources to the research team, since without that you won't progress even if you started the research. The assign resources interface is on the same screen, max it out with the plus button.

4.- On the master control panel (lower-center part of the screen) increase heat to 100 and water to 75. Now press the play button on the top-right corner of the screen.

5.- Once the research is complete and your power station built, add one boiler and three tubines to the only available sector on your power station (lower-right menu) through the gear-plus button. Click the on/off button on the master control panel. You should see the master control panel indicator for heat and water go up.

6.- You're basically done generating power at this point. You'll be getting around 2.1GW with this method, you can start accepting contracts that are 1.5-1.8GW, do so before the power meter of the main control panel gets to max. If it gets to max and you continue to generate power, you'll bust your power unit. The power meter represents the amount of stored energy, so you can play with it to accept higher gigawatt contracts (stored power + generated power). Also keep an eye on the resource menu, if you run out of fuel, well...

Personal note: The lack of documentation and steep difficulty scaling make this game more frustrating than fun (unless you're an electrical engineer, I guess), so good luck!

It's important to keep in mind that you can indeed achieve more power with less water, but that increases the overall temperature thus making the power unit prone to more frequent emergency maintenances (downtime). You can monitor the operating temperature on the sector display of the UI, and check on the available parts menu if your current boiler can withstand that temperature.

you can put your water as low as around 55 and you receive about 2.5-2.8GW with just the starter reactor.
Another tip is to invest in turbine and energy storage first

Early research that seems good:
* Accounting -> Logistics -> Fuel turnover - autobuy fuel
* Quality parts - doubles your power output without changing the initial setup
* Lobbying - gives you a bit of extra safety since you will fail contracts due to unforeseen circumstances (blowing up reactors)
* Power unit -> Power storage - gives you more flexibility

Unsure about contracts:
* if it says 4GW until the end of the period you have to maintain that power output until the end of the contract
* if it says 1TWxd for 6m that means you have to deliver 1TWd in total, or maintain approx 5.6GW over the 6m (1000GW/6/30d), so while these are more flexible, its a bit harder to know whether you can fully complete them
* i think that if you partially complete the contract, it will not fine you the full amount

* Unlocking some new research is dangerous, even though it says - increases something resistance, i find it sometimes gets the reactor to heat up. Might be wrong about this, hard to tell why the reactor blew up sometimes.
* Also unlocking research tends to make contracts harder to fulfill, there seems to be some order in which you should complete these to not brick your progress. What i mean by bricking is that you will get into a situation where you never can completely fulfill a contract
* You can sell research, not sure whether that has any effect on your competitors, but it can help you in some crisis situations.
* Do not play on max speed, it will blow up your reactor after your contracts end, since if you max out on stored power you will start overheating.
* Initially i thought weather has an effect on heat, but it does not seem to be that way.

Game is hard, does not tell you how things work really. Cant get past the initial setup. Some of my notes

* Control panel heating slider controls how much heat your boilers generate ~ how much fuel you put in the boilers
* Control panel water supply tells you how much you cool the boilers with water
* The higher temperature your sector has, the more power it will generate, but i also think the faster the parts will deteriorate or something

The above explain how to optimize your power generation. Max out heating and water initially, and slide the water supply as low as you can without overheating. Unfortunately there is not enough information in the game on how to set this, you have to trial and error.
