Pine nuts are eaten raw or roasted and are one of the ingredients of pesto. Locally, the wood is used for furniture and other purposes.

Stone pines (Pinus pinea) has been cultivated throughout the Mediterranean region for so long (at least 6,000 years) that it has naturalized, and is often considered native beyond its natural range.
