Staying alive, whatever it takes.
By HeartBender
First off, has a fresh spawn you have 3 things to do. 1) Gear up 2) Stay healthy 3) Stay alive. It's easier than you think to gear up. This guide will tell you how to gear up, kill threats, when to do what, how to avoid getting shot.

Open doors and you!
This mainly goes for bases and airfields, but works with other buildings that spawn with closed doors inside.

1) Doors are open this usually means there is/was a player nearby which means you should advance with caution. (Gun out, looking around, listening for noises.)

2) Don't spend time looking for gear if 1 is true, skim and leave, take what you need. If doors are open you risk running into them again if they search a second time for anything they missed.

3) My god, the doors are closed, but open on the inside! This could mean a few things, A) They are inside still. B) They want to scare you away with scary thoughts. C) They are waiting for you..... *MUAHAHAHAHAHA* If you value life, move along. or if you want to go ahead and "#Yolo" go right on in. It's really upto you.

  • Shutting doors after you enter a building is a GREAT way to tell if a player has entered/left your building who ISN'T on your side.

  • Smart systems when in airfields/bases: Have someone watch the door while the others loot and when those people are done looting, have the watchmen swap with someone and go find loot he wants (Obviously be fair and leave ♥♥♥♥ for him, you asshats, he might've saved your lives.)

  • That scary moment you see a door open/close infront of you.... It's NOT a glitch. Quickly grab your friend, go on each side of the door, looking in both sides, and open the door and shoot the player(s) before they log out/shoot you.
Those pesky, and yet helpful Zombies!
1) Zombies, Zombies are a players most useful tool for telling if someone is nearby, if a zombie is out-of-place you can tell there was DEFINATELY a player nearby, better yet the aggro range on a zombie is should I say... retarded. If you see a zombie all of the sudden run for no reason, follow it and be cautious, don't follow it directly, take another route where you can still see it. It will usually lead you to a player, if you catch them with their axe out you can definately shoot them.

2) When to pop a cap in that zombies ass. Next to never, If you're at a High Loot area such as an airfield or base you should NEVER make noise, why? Because zombies will flock to you with gun shots, it's different if you shoot a player because "#Yolo" but never a zombie, this is why you die early! (For them zombie shooters.)

Quick tips:
  • Zombies are rather easy to escape, just keep sprinting eventually they'll get tired and go "♥♥♥♥ you!"

  • Zombies can, and sometimes will be the bane of your exsistance. Why? read the above text, zombies can lead other players to you and they do it well by going "RAWR HURGURJOPIGJIEHRG" and all that annoying zombie ♥♥♥♥, and not to mention the random sprinting. Try to avoid them zombies by not sprinting like an idiot.

  • Manfight them zombies! are you a fresh spawn and you really want loot but those zombies are making it hard? MANFIGHT THEM! Pull out your fists and aim for the head, Bijuu Mode The Pink Pyro (Contributor) Has studied and proven (Trust me, it really is funny as hell to watch and do) that 1v1ing a Zombie with your fists and aiming at the head is now easier that Axing a zombie. (It's really stupid after they nerfed Axes damaged to zombies.) <~~~ Fire Axes no longer 1 shot zombies. (You MAY have noticed.)
PvP and you!
1) If you do run into a player don't just shoot, unless they see you.... Aim for the legs and head. If you shoot the torso you risk hitting the backpack which is what you generally want to search for the largest amount of supplies. Headshots are of course, insta deaths! (Unless you hit their Good helmet, which I think does protect them if it's in good condition (Unconfirmed.) Shooting the legs keeps loot loss to a minimum but is beneficial where as they are a bigger target than the head, and can immobilize a player.

2) See a dead player? Do not approach. It means 1 of 2 things.... A) Sniper, rather rare in some areas but still possible. B) Player who decided "Oh yay, loot!" again, DO NOT APPROACH AND TAKE COVER/Log out it is not worth getting sniped and or found. (Unless you wish to "#Yolo")

3) Strange loot. Strangle loot is often a more of "Oh wow never seen that here before." more than a "Oh no!" <~~~~ Which is what you need to be aware of. If you see strange loot meaning loot that you've never seen in that building before it generally indicates a player who dropped things he doesn't want/need. (Proceed with Caution.)

4)) When you should/shouldn't have your gun out. If you're traveling you shouldn't have your gun out, why? Most people who travel in obvious spots (Roads, etc) have their gun out, if you can sprint and make them have to reload you can by then pull out your gun and be up close enough to score a KO/Killing blow! (NEXT LEVEL JUKES SON!) Most peoples aim in DayZ is utter ♥♥♥♥. (No offense but it's semi-true.) Military loot zones, this is just an absolute yes for guns being ♥♥♥♥♥♥ and ready, because if you see doors open you could catch that jerk stealing YOUR loot with his pants off! (Literally! luls.) Shoot that mofo in the head! DO IT. Elektro <This speaks for it self, guns blazing, kiddies!

Quick tips:
  • Being shot at? you're screwed. (Nah JK.) When you're being shot at and haven't been hit, start zig zagging in a large radius, if you zig zag too quickly back and fourth in a small area chances are you will be hit if they spray the area, and don't get ballsy and try to head towards it, it's not worth it, if you really want to, flank around them.

  • Asshats and you! Do you see someone whos being a complete and utter idiot? Such as shooting at fresh spawns, or perhaps shooting zombies? Well, then they deserve to die. The zombies deserve to be shot, but really man? Don't be dumb. And those fresh spawns? ♥♥♥♥ off them, they're fresh spawns. You wouldn't want to get shot at as a fresh spawn, huh? WELL SUCKS YOU DESERVE IT. I'm sorry.. I get pumped over those poor fresh spawns.. anyways.. shoot him in the ballsack.

  • When someone talks to you... you have really 3 choices... 1) Do as they say and risk being shot/robbed/nothing 2) Be an idiot and try to shoot the man with the gun pointed at you who now controls your life span. 3) Be smart and wait till he lowers his gun. If someone tries to handcuff you, and they're ALONE you can pull out your gun and move away and pop him, it's really easy to do 1 on 1, but never attempt 2v1. Unless the other person has an axe and isn't close, don't try it, just let them have their "fun" ..muahahahaha.
Medical attention and you!
Do you or a friend need medical attention? Well listen up guys/girls!

Defibulators = DO NOT REVIVE DEAD PLAYERS, (Trust me. I found that out.) They wake up UNCONCIOUS players. (Require a battery, recommended both battery and defibulators be in "Pristine" condition or you risk killing the player.

Blood Bags = For extracting blood and giving blood (when it has blood) from/to other players!
Blood Bags! How does it work? simple. In order to effectively use a blood bag kit without killing the player you try to give blood to, you must first acquire/know FOR SURE both blood types. (O- // O + // A+ // A- // B- // B+) with a BLOOD TEST KIT. (VERY IMPORTANT) If both are the same (Universal blood types do not work currently in DayZ.) then you can tranfer blood! you have the other person gather the blood, (AGAIN, MUST BE SAME BLOOD TYPE!!!!!!!) then the person who needs it have someone give it to them. If you give someone the wrong blood they will suffer a heart attack and die. (Literally)

Saline Bag = The healing bag alone. You need a IV Start Kit to combine with the bag to make it into Saline Bag IV! Then you have someone give it to the person who needs healing.

Saline Bag IV = Healing solution that requires two (2) people to use. One gives it to the person who requires healing.

Bandages = VERY SLIGHTLY HEALS YOU and stops bleeding.

Injection Vial = Useless at the moment.

Syringe = Um, Useless at the moment.

Splint = Take sticks and rags together to make a splint, useful for mending broken bones if you don't have morphine.

Morphine = Mends "fractures" / Broken bones.

Epinephrine = Wakes up unconcious players.

In the event of a friend getting shot, and for some reason you can't speak to them or contact them in any ways, first you must move into action!

Lets run you through how to make sure your friend survives being shot.

Pre-Medic steps: Secure your friend! kill the person who shot your friend, or make sure he has left and won't be back, or have friends suppress him.

Medic steps:

Step 1) Check Pulse.

Step 2) If alive, bandage! (Shots will usually cause bleeding, even if you don't see blood pouring out, do it anyways.)

Step 3) Administer a Saline Bag IV. (This SHOULD heal them to a point where they are in the non-danger zone and should wake them up.)

Step 4) If your friend is alive, but not waking up (Wait a minute.) give him an epinephrine dose.

Step 5) Ask your friends if bones are broken. If yes, Morphine him!

Step 6) Have him eat if he isn't light green energized and hydrated.

Step 7) Check pulse again.

Step 8) If everything checks out, you're good to go!
LOCK AND LOAD!
1) What guns are good and for what? Handguns: Magnum all out good gun, unfortunately it's only good for Close Quarters Combat. 1911, I have a hard time finding clips for this, but I like this gun, I would say Close Quarters to mid range. Amphibia S It's a silent a gun, oh my jesus? It's rather weak but effective if you can CLICKCLICKCLICK in Close Quarters against players. FNX 45 / CR 75 these guns are rather the same, both are mid-ranged and have a large clip (15) unforetunately those clips are rare as well. Magnum = Best Handgun! Main guns) Sporter 22: Just stop. throw that BB gun away, stupid. (It's a hunting gun.) Blaze Double Rifle, this gun is a 2 shot gun, I've never personally used it VS players but I can tell you it will maybe Incapacitate a player if you get both shots in, or kill with a headshot. SKS this gun is a good gun that can be used in any situation, it is a good sniper and Close Quarters weapon. I prefer to use this weapon over any other, ammo is pretty common for me. Mosin (Nagant): This gun is a 1-2 shot kill, It's ammo is fairly common, and is a general sniper weapon if you can find a Long Range Scope for it, this gun is really only useful Mid-Long Range due to it being Bolt Action, by the time you get off your one shot, they've probably gotten off 3-5. M4A1: This gun is retardedly broke in DayZ. I've seen/killed people with all CQB Attachments who can shoot at me at a 600M range and be able to HIT ME <~~~WHAAAAT?
If anything the gun shouldn't be able to shoot that far, with CQB attachments atleast, but close range at any point even in a perhaps 1v4 situation is deadly and should be feared. Clips are common at airbases/bases.

Where these guns are found.

Handguns are generally found everywhere. (Every handgun, Ammo for the magnum is found EVERYWHERE. The Clips for the rest are uncommon to extremely rare.)

Sporter/Blaze/SKS/Mosin can be found in 2-3 story and in higher value loot civilian houses.(Loot can be common to rare depending on where you loot.)

SKS/Mosin can be found in Military Loot Zones. (Ammo is found everywhere, common and uncommon depending where you are.)

M4A1 Is usually only found in Military Loot Zones.

Attachments: Mosin's are best outfitted with an Atlas Bipod, PRISTINE (Recommended for best use) M44 Compensator, and a Long Range Scope. SKS's are best outfitted with a PU Scope (For Mid-Long Range fighting.) Note: I said this was a sniper, but it's truly more of a semi, it's best used mid-ranged or CQB. I'm not sure if you can outfit with a Bipod, if you can, do it. M4A1's can have virtually every attachment on them, a weapon flashlight, silencer, Bipod, Scope (ACOG is the best.) and ETC.

Quick tips: (This is my personal preferred gun loadout.)
  • Magnums are best used with speedloaders! (How they work: When you're in a firefight and you really don't wanna have to spend that time going into your inventory dragging that ammo (And finding it..) to your gun, speedloaders help with that. You keep them OUT of your gun and when you really need to reload fast, you use the speedloader, which is quickly accessed through your mousewheel scroll and interact commands. It is best to have about 2-3, feel free to have more.

  • SKS's are ALSO best used with their own speedloader, I haven't found one in sometime, but I believe they're called "Clips" they're basically just a rail with bullet holders, I USE to find them a lot, but that maybe due to me not being in the more higher loot areas, they are incredibly useful because yet again... when you're in those team fights and you don't wanna search and drag ammo you want them.

  • Ammo boxes! These are a godsend, literally. For these guns (SKS and Magnum) I usually have a surplus of the munitions, which uh, is very annoying. Ammo boxes are 4 slot boxes that hold A LOT of ammo, I usually have 2 because I believe they're 8 slot (Or 10, not sure.) These are very useful, alls you do is in the field when you need to reload those speedloaders is drop it, and drag the ammo which you don't have to search for! (WOW!) (Amazing!)

  • How to be a douche bag without killing people. Are you there at that fresh loot airfield/base? Do you see lots of guns you DONT want but other people do? Take them and hide them in a far off bush! This will save you from possibly getting shot from a gun you didn't want. Just take it into your hands, go to a bush thats a decent ways away (Not talking miles.) and just kind've drop it in there, I do the same with unneeded munitions! I know it seems ♥♥♥♥♥♥, but come on, we have enough asshats walking around with M4A1's and spraying, right?
Staying healthy!
You always want to be "Healthy" because if you take damage you will not be healthy, but you will be "healing" which slowly and surely heals you, remember to always be Light Green "Hydrated" and "Energized." always keep those status' up and check them constantly.

  • Make sure to eat food first then drink, eating makes your thirsty.

  • Best places to drink are at ponds or water pumps.

  • Best food = Rice, although rare it's sooooo good.

  • Rotten food = Do not eat. You will become sick and throw up, and can kill you, same with too much disinfectant, morphine and epinephrine!
Extra tips and you!
For all those non DayZ savvy players, here's some tips you may or may not know but here they are anyways!
  • If you shoot a player once and they instantly go down chances are they either were wounded, near-death and or you scored a headshot! If you want to find out instead of wasting a bullet, go up to them and "Check Pulse" using the mouse-wheel and action command! scroll down to "Check Pulse" and hit that mouse wheel, this will generally tell you if they're dead for a while, or freshly killed. Or it will tell you if they're alive, I do believe you can do this to any status'd player. (Alive, unconscious, or dead.) (Check Pulse for dummies! Strong Pulse = Full health (Or Barely wounded.) //Moderate pulse/Mild pulse = Wounded // Weak Pulse = Near death. No pulse and lukewarm / warm to the touch = freshly dead indicating you and or someone else recently "Ownt this mothafukka" No pulse and cold to the touch = someone "Ownt" this fukka close to 5-10 mins ago.

  • Preserving your rations: You see a lot of sodas, sodas restore very slight hunger and thirst, drink a few of these every time you loot a building and your "energized" and "hydrated" bars will stay light green and keep you on "Healing" or "Healthy"!

  • Although I DON'T condone the methods of "Server Hopping" The best thing to do is to shut ALL the doors in the building to distract/Lull players into them! (Always leave a BIT of loot in the building you log out in to ensure they spend their time looking.)

  • Staying Dry! so far I've noticed/had suspicions that when your CLOTHES are wet they get damaged faster, I can't prove this but so far I've had some run ins with zombies that when my clothes are wet instantly destroy my clothing they hit upon the first hit, and when dry they stay "Pristine" or w/e I have them at. So, I'd recommend for now if you like "Pristine" or good condition clothing that you stay dry!

  • Running in groups... It's best to not assign group medics due to the fact that if the medic gets shot and the Saline IV Bags get damaged (Ruined I'm not sure if they work, 100% chance they don't) then what would be the point? I recommend that everyone keeps 1-2 Saline Bags and and 2-4 bandages, an Epinephrine (Or Defibrillator, they wake people up.) and some morphine. Like I said earlier, if the medic is shot and killed then everyone else who needs medical attention might not receive it if the medical supplies are ruined/lost! (Common sense people!) And no, you may think "Oh, but we can protect the medic." Yeah, but if someone snipes him, and or shoots him you can't really save him then. (Don't argue, just think smart.)

  • Never carry 2 Main weapons. (Meaning M4A1 and a Mosin.) Why? It encumbers you. You can't always stay unseen, someone will eventually catch you and if you need your m4a1 and have your mosin out you can't just tell them to wait and pull out the other, not to mention you just gave Him/Her/Them 2 good guns. Pick a gun and roll with it, if you want multiple gun types then get some friends and share your guns. If you are a sniper and need a decent ranged gun I recommend an FNX 45 or a Magnum.

  • Friendly Fire and you! Do you have a group of people and you often times nearly shoot them because you think they're an enemy/threat? Honestly, take 5-20 minutes and learn what they look like, or get a specific item and wear it, such as a Black Red Star Beret. This will alert you to whos with you and who isn't.

  • Group Gathering requires Cooperation, instead of alerting the whole group to an item they MIGHT need why not gather it and when the group is done looting drop everything into a pile you don't need/sharing and alert the others. Alert your group to this idea to make sure people cooperate.

  • Safe Grouping and you! To truly avoid that "Accidental Oopsie" group with people you've known online for a WHILE or know in real life, because those "Accidental oopsies" (Being "accidentally" betrayed) Probably isn't accidental.

  • *****VERY IMPORTANT AIMING TIP!******* When you're shooting at a person and you think it should be hitting them, stop and think "Realistic apopcalypse simulator." try aiming just a VERY TINY BIT infront of the person in the direction they are strafing/running and if they're standing still and not shooting and or unarmed but threatening you, remember: Head or legs. I recommend if standing still aiming for the head. I've diffused a few heated situations, one with my buddy, Bijuu Mode The Pink Pyro! we were in the NEAF in the prison when someone shot at me with an SKS, I told him "Friendly" and well, because he had shot at me no warning, I shot him in the head. Although I don't condone (Support/accept) I didn't want to take the chance, especially because I had a magnum, and Bijuu had a single bullet chambered in a CR 75. So, in this case, it was for personal gain, and safety. (Like I said I do not support killing for fun, I support "Need to" kill, meaning for Self-Defense/Threat Possibility and Survival, which both of these reasons are tethered closely together.) Stay semi-friendly!

Top Tip-never store morphine inside your pants
Goatroach 2 Jun, 2014 @ 5:58pm
Yeah, I try to keep a medpack stocked with 6 morphine. Nothing like crawling for an hour to the nearest hospital only to find no morphine, or worse: you heal your leg, then a phasing zombie bursts through the wall and immediately breaks your leg AGAIN. That actually happened to me, hence why I keep 6 morphine in a medkit protected by a hard box and stowed in my backpack.
Ereghast 2 Jun, 2014 @ 2:25pm
ok thx luckily...a nice guy healed me with morphine :D...and then i was walking away and got mauled by 3 zombies...then i returned and healed myself then he gave me a rifle :D so i am doing fine but thanks...next time ill remember that...to think...i couldve died O_O
HeartBender  [author] 2 Jun, 2014 @ 2:14pm
Morphine? No, there is no fixing a fracture unless you have a splint or morphine.
Ereghast 2 Jun, 2014 @ 1:47pm
any help healing without a that stuff...forgot its name...i wanna know if a fracture heals automatically over time...
Goatroach 27 May, 2014 @ 8:58am
So far my number one cause of death is server timeout while bleeding or bandaging.
I just lost the character I had kept alive for over 50 hours of gameplay because the server timed-out right after a zombie attack that left me bleeding. I treated the wound with alcohol, applied a medical bandage, bleeding stopped, then red text appeard displaying the amount of time no server comunication had passed. The time coincided (in my Shadowplay video) just a couple of seconds after the zombie made me bleed. FML.

Thank you, Goatroach! I appreciate it.

Great guide!
I have yet to kill or be killed by another player, even though I've encountered many. I figure if they tell me to put away my weapon, I better shoot a few shots at their legs and run like the wind. Most people actually are just glad I'm genuinly a friendly willing to trade and/or search for loot on their behalf. If I do cripple a player (only 2 thus far), when I get out of sight, I drop them a bandage and morphine, then tell them I left them the aid. It's a courtesy, and I keep 2 med kits stocked with 6 pristine morphine and bandages for mass emergencies. I'm a hero/survivor type, and so far I've stayed alive a long, long, long time.

Finally, I keep a "will" on me for when I die so other players have something to discover on me that sets me apart from the rest of the players. Here it is:

I just want to say that having 2 guns is ok if you keep the more useful one out. Right now I have an SKS and a mosin. My SKS is out cause it's all-round better gun. My mosin is there for when I need to snipe. I have both cause they're both really good and I have like 80 ammo for each.
