Basics
So you want to play medic. Well, go ahead. It's easy, right? Just keep your medigun out and try not to die. Congrats, you know the very bare bone basics of medic. If you want to get better, though, there are lots of things you can do to become a good, or maybe even a great, medic. Let's begin.
Surviving
See that soldier? you were healing him, and the enemy team, consisting of 2 soldiers and a heavy, ran him over. And you're next on the conveyer belt of death and destruction. What do you do? Do you:
a. accept your fate
b. attempt to fight back, using your primary weapon and ubersaw
c. run the ♥♥♥♥ away
d. surf the soldiers' rockets
e. go for a tauntkill
f. pop your uber
If you chose f, d, or c, you are probably still alive. Good job! Go find your team. If you chose anything else, you're insane. I like insane, but you're trying to survive here. Alright, time to go into specifics.
Surviving: Scout
Scouts are the ultimate killers. They run fast, they shoot good, and if you're not careful, they can flank your team from behind and finish you off really easily. If a Scout is consistently owning you, you might try getting good hanging around your power classes more. instead of staying behind your heavy, stay inside him. instead of ignoring your engineer, stick around him. the only solid counter to a scout is a sentry gun and its Engineer. The last thing you want is to be forced or dropped by a juicy 104 damage meatshot.
Surviving: Soldier
Alright, forget everything you know about Soldier. Now, what do you know? Nothing. So I will tell you about Soldier. Soldier is a 200 health medic-dropping beast. His rockets can easily two-shot you, and his Gunboats allow him to get as deep behind you as a Scout. Your best bet is to surf away towards your team so your Heavy can give you a sandvich and your Soldier and Pyro can chew the unfortunate roamer up. Unless the Soldier can airshot. Then you're probably screwed.
Surviving: Pyro
Pyro, by himself, is not an issue. Actually, nevermind. Pyro is a huge issue. His burst damage is so great he chews through light classes in small rooms like tissue paper. And you're only 25 hp away from being a light class yourself.
Even you can easily be countered by Pyro. A simple right click, and your guaranteed uber or escape is snuffed out, and you die. your best bet, is, again, surfing an airblast or using the quickfix, whose uber is immune to airblast. you might even get hackusations from m2-happy pyros.
Surviving: Demo
Last I checked, Demoman was an explosive class. So you know what to do. Surf away to your heart's content. Also, uber renders them useless against you, unless they have a trap set or their pipe aim is really good.
Surviving: Heavy
Surprisingly, you can surf the minigun. It takes practice and time, but you can pull it off. Also, Heavy is a burst damage class, so uber destroys their damage capability.
Surviving: Spy
If you are checking your back like a good little medic, spy should not be a problem at all. After all, you're surrounded by your teammates, and the Spy is alone. If you are consistently dying to stabs, start hanging around your Pyros, Snipers and Engineers. Pyros are natural-born spycheckers, Snipers are easy Spy targets, allowing you to catch the Spy out, and Engineer nests are damn near impenetrable if your team is protecting the engineer.
Surviving: Engineer
...why are you dying to an engineer? you're a bad medic if you even think of going near a sentry nest without an uber, and if you're getting shot by a sentry, retreat back to your team. why... why engineer?...
Surviving: Medic
When it comes to Medic 1v1s, you two are pretty evenly matched. The winner is the one with their team or with the element of surprise, or both.
Surviving: Sniper
"If you see a dot on the wall, don't cross. Like, don't show your face in that sightline ever again, because the Sniper is now existing right there. Just go um... just go upgrade your dispenser heal your team I guess?" Seriously, though, Snipers are not your problem. Your problem is not dying to them. So just be aware of any dots on walls.
Other Things
the next few sections will cover things that don't involve surviving, like uber chaining. yeah, finally, the fun stuff of playing medic.
Other Things: Good Weapons
Alright, time to tell you what weapons you should be using. First off: the crossbow! you can heal from really far away. enough said. Next: the overdose! it lets you do the whole "surviving" thing much better because, well, the faster you run the more chance you have to survive. Next: the quickfix! Pyros can't mess you up anymore. Next: the Ubersaw! 25% uber per swing is really, really good. This weapon is meta. Next: the vaccinator! people hate this thing. it blocks so much damage for -75% of the cost of building uber.
Other Things: Uber
Uber is the only reason to play medic. Uber lets you be immune to damage, have full crits, have full resistance to a specific type of damage, or be a damage sponge. I recommend holding the uber until the last possible moment, until your pocket is about to die. you can also uberchain, where you and another medic both equip the ubersaw and uber each other, and then build uber off the enemy team while ubered. It's scarily effective.
the end
you've reached the end of the guide. have a large engineer. also i hope you liked my guide it took me an hour to make it im so tired remember to like subsricbe and smash that bell like i smashed your mom
