Haikus have a three-line, 5-7-5 type of format.

This means, on the first line, there are 5 syllables. On the second line, there are seven syllables, and on the third line there are another 5 syllables.

Don't worry, they're simply a group of sounds within a word. Sometimes, one word counts as one syllable.

Now, there are six rules for counting syllables, as far as I'm aware.

- Syllables have one vowel sound each.
- Syllables split at double consonants- such as let-ter or scrib-ble.
- They split at compound words, like cup-cake and mail-box.
- Vowel-consonant, consonant-vowel. Spark-ling and sun-shine.
- Consonant & le. War-ble and bun-dle, for example.
- Finally, a split prefix and/or suffix, such as re-do or won-der-ful.

There! Now you know how to determine syllables.

Now you should be able to write a haiku!
