Special Japanese Tracks

There are some other kind of tracks in Japan play a key role in the train system, such as dual gauge track (used in Mini-shinkansen) and ballastless dual gauge track (used in Seikan Tunnel). Mainly used for allowing conventional train and high speed train (Shinkansen) coexist on the same rail line without the need of constructing a brand new parallel high speed line. It make sense when constructing a parallel high speed line is not cost-effective.

1. Mini-shinkansen Dual Gauge Track

Maximum Speed: 130 km/h
Local governments wants to have direct high speed train service to the capital city. However sometimes there aren't enough population / political influence to build a parallel high speed line. To tackle this, they modified conventional narrow gauge track to accommodate standard gauge high speed train with only one quarter of the cost of the full version high speed line.

2. Seikan Tunnel Dual Gauge Track
In game name: JP. Seikan T. Dual Gauge
Maximum Speed: 250 km/h
There is a high demand of cargo transport between Hokkaido and Honshu, which is separated by a strait. Most cargo train service is operate on conventional narrow gauge railway while Shinkansen (high speed train) trains are standard gauge train. They both need to operate between two island. However it is too expensive to build two separate double-track railway tunnels. Therefore conventional narrow gauge train and Shinkansen runs on the same track and through the same tunnel.
