Introduction
This Final Fantasy game is a little different than the rest of the series. There's no player leveling here. Instead, you'll raise your stats as you combat, use an equipment, or cast an spell.
Unlike Final Fantasy I, this title has at least three missable achievements:
  1. Legendary Treasure Hunter - Collected treasure from 100% of the chests.
  2. Adventurous Wayfarer - Traveled to all the map locations.
  3. Memory Lane - Learned all passwords.

My team was:
  • Firion: White Mage (gave him the white mage tomes).
  • Maria: Black Mage (gave her the black mage tomes).
  • Guy: Physical Attacker.
  • Ever changing character: Physical Attacker mostly.

Cost for resting at the Inns varies depending on your taken damage.
Try to stick with at least one spell and equipment throughout the game as there an achievement for reaching level 16 with one of each type. You should easily reach level 16 with Cure if you use it all the time to heal your party members.

The Item Shop is the same for all the towns in the game:

Feel free to purchase anything. However, we'll soon reach a town with better items so I'd say it's better to wait a bit.

Once done with your purchases, go to the southwest corner of the town (must enter from the center area) and enter the house.
Talk to Paul:
Ask → Ekmet Teloess
Exit

Go back to the Castle Fynn.

Castle Fynn - 1F

Head north and upstairs three times to reach the throne room.

Castle Fynn - 4F

From here, go northeast all the way to find an interaction bubble.

Interact with the wall:
Ask → Ekmet Teloess

Go through the secret path.
Go southeast and take the stairs down all the way to 1F.
Once there, stand just 1 tile before the stairs and walk east to find a hidden passage.

Head south and stop just 1 tile before the bottom wall.
Now enter through another secret passage on the left side.

Head south and go through the door.
You'll find three chests inside. Open all for Golden Armor, Golden Shield, and Gold Cuirass. [96/234]

Exit the room and head back to the stairs to B1. Go down.

1200 Gil - 1500 Gil - Wizard's Staff - Black Robe - Confuse Tome - Flare Tome

  • This boss is pretty much the same as the previous two but with a different element.
  • This one absorbs Thunder and is weak to Scourge, so make sure to have one of your mages with Scourge learned and then spam that through the whole battle.
  • This fight might be a bit longer than the previous due to the high HP of the boss.
  • After winning, go north and take the stairs leading up.

Mysidian Tower - 8F
  • From the stairs, head east and then all the way north.
  • From here, go east to find a chest containing Monsters! (Gottos x2, Devil's Bloom) → Flare Tome. [176/234]

  • This is an ice-based creature so spam all your fire-based arsenal to take it down quickly.
  • With that, we are done with the chests for this dungeon.
  • From the chest, head south, then east, then north through the second door.
  • Go up the stairs.

Mysidian Tower - 10F
  • Head all the way north and talk to Minwu.
  • After the sad scene, go north through the door.

  • Now go east to find another chest. Open it for Antarctic Wind. [214/234]

  • From the previous chest, go southwest for a chest containing Monsters! (Blue Dragon) → Cat Claws [215/234]

  • Just like the previous dragons, this one is also elemental.
  • To be more specific, it's thunder-resistant, so spam Scourge spells if you have them or simply do like me and auto-attack until winning.
  • After the battle, go all the way east, then all the way north and through the door.
  • Take the stairs down.

Jade Passage - B3
  • Head down the stairs, then east past the waterfall (the bridge deals 1HP to all party members for each tick), then up another set of stairs.
  • Now at the top, go east and then immediately south through yet another set of stairs.
  • At the bottom, go up the left stairs to reach a chest. Don't open it yet.
  • Heal up and quick-save first.

  • Once prepared, open the chest to trigger a boss fight (King Behemoth) → Rune Axe. [216/234]
  • This battle is pretty much the same thing as the one we had with the original Behemoth.
  • The boss will stick to physical attacks, so cast Protect, and it's resistant to magical attacks, so auto-attack until winning. Also heal up with the White Mage if needed.
  • And that's basically the whole strategy.

  • After the battle, head back down the stairs and continue west across the bridge.
  • Go down the stairs and then head east.
  • The wizard behind the waterfall sells some powerful spells if you feel like taking a look. I suggest equipping everyone with Berserk and Haste.

  • Exit the room.
  • Now from the door, go east to the corner of the room to find yet another chest. Don't open it yet.
  • Heal up and quick-save, then open the chest for Monsters! (Red Dragon) → Yoichi Bow [221/234]

  • This is probably the hardest of the dragons due to its high stats: 180 ATK and 180 DEF.
  • However, like all previous dragons, this one is also elemental.
  • Resistant to Fire and weak to Ice-based spells. You already know what to do with that information.
  • After winning, head to the southeastern corner of the room and go through the door.
  • Head down the stairs.

Jade Passage - B5
  • Go east and through the linear passage to reach a chest containing Hi-Potion. [222/234]

  • Continue through the path to reach another chest. Open it for Protect Ring. [223/234]

  • Head south, then southeast, then east to find a chest containing an Elixir. [226/234]

  • Backtrack to the starting position and head north.
  • Once at top of the screen, go east, then south, then west, then south again, then east through the wall to take a shortcut.
  • Continue south, then east and take the warp pad to the next floor.

Pandaemonium - 4F
  • From the entrance, head northwest and go through the first door.

Pandaemonium - 5F
  • Head northwest and then south through the archway.
  • Now, head west and then north through another archway.
  • Go east at the split and then continue all the way north until hitting a wall.
  • From here, head directly west and go through the wall.

  • Go all the way north and then head east to go through another wall.
  • You'll reach a chest. Heal up and quick-save before opening it.

  • Once ready, open the chest for:

  • This boss is pretty much a joke for this place.
  • If it takes more than one round to beat, then you're doing something wrong.
  • After the battle, you'll be rewarded with Genji Gloves. [227/234]
  • Equip it as soon as possible, as it's one of the best accessories in the game.

  • Now head south, then southeast, then all the way north through two archways.
  • From here, head all the way east until hitting the wall in a room with a pillar.
  • Head south while hugging the eastern wall and then east to access a secret room.

  • Open the chest inside the secret room for the best weapon in the game: The Masamune. [228/234]

  • Exit the secret room.
  • Now make your way back to 4F or use Warp spell if you have a Tome or learned.

Pandaemonium - 4F
  • Go south, a bit east, and through the second door.

Pandaemonium - 5F
  • Head west, then north, then east a bit, then north until hitting the nearer wall.
  • Walk west to go through the wall.

  • Continue west and go north through the left archway to reach another chest.

  • Tiamat has high high defense, high physical attack power, and absorbs all basic elements (fire, ice, lightning, and poison).
  • Your best bet is casting non-elemental spells such as Holy, Flare, or Ultima, or attacking with piercing weapons such as the Masamune or Excalibur. I personally did the second.
  • Equipped my physical attacker (Guy) with the Masamume on one hand and the Excalibur on the other, and the boss was down within five turns.

  • Either way, it's not a hard fight. Just have a decent source of constant damage and keep your party healed at all times, and the battle will be done before you even notice.
  • After winning the battle, you'll be rewarded with Genji Helm. [229/234]
  • Now make your way back to 4F or use the Warp spell. That's up to you.

Pandaemonium - 4F
  • Go south, all the way east, and through the fourth door (yes, skip the third for now).

Pandaemonium - 6F
  • Follow the linear path east to a chest. Heal up and quick-save before opening it.

  • After winning the battle, you'll be rewarded with Genji Armor. [230/234]
  • Now make your way back to 4F or use the Warp spell.

  • Head south, then west to the third archway, then north and through the third door.

Pandaemonium - 6F
  • Follow the linear path through the first three archaways, then just before going through the fourth, head west and go through the wall for a shortcut to the chest.

  • Approach the chest, heal up and quick-save, then once ready, open the chest for the arguably hardest battle in the game.

15000 Gil - White Robe - Mythril Mirror - Spider Silk - Saint's Spirit - Wind Flute

  • This boss drains your life with each physical attack, so you have to be fast when killing it in order to not die in the process.
  • I spammed Ultima with my White Mage, Flare with my Black Mage, and attacked with the other two. I was lucky enough to kill the boss before having to heal my party members, so I highly recommended you doing the same.
  • Reload your quick-save if you mess up and try again.

  • After winning the battle, you'll be rewarded with a Ribbon. [231/234]
  • Go a bit north and stop just before the archway; just 1 tile before.
  • From here, head west to pass through an hidden passage.

  • Head south from there until 3 tiles away from the very bottom of the screen.
Then go west for yet another shortcut.

  • Step on the warp pad to get teleported to the other side of 4F.

Pandaemonium - 4F
  • Follow the linear path north, then east, then take the teleporter.

Pandaemonium - 7F
  • Head west, then north to find a chest containing Sage's Wisdom. [232/234]

  • From the chest, go all the way west, then north up the stairs, then all the way east.
  • Now go south and follow the linear path up to the warp pad, but don't step on it yet.
  • Instead, try to farm the encounter against the Iron Giant if you haven't found it yet (refer to the screenshot below for an example on how the enemy looks like).

  • This floor is more pleasant when it comes to random encounters as it features mostly Devil Wolves than anything else.
  • Once you're ready to continue, step on the teleporter.

Pandaemonium - 8F
  • Go east, then north up the stairs, then east and south down the stairs.
  • Now, go all the way east to find a chest. Open it for Hellfire. [233/234]

  • From the chest, go up the stairs, then west, then north another set of stairs.
  • Head east at the split, then north up the stairs, then west.
  • You'll see another set of stairs just in front of you, go north and then west to find the last chest in the game. Open it for an Acid Phial. [234/234]
  • The next achievement won't unlock until winning one extra battle.

Legendary Treasure Hunter Collected treasure from 100% of the chests.

  • Now go east, down the stairs, and east again until you spot a warp pad.
  • Step on it to get teleported to 9F.

Pandaemonium - 9F
  • From the warp pad, go all the way south, then all the way west.
  • Step on the warp pad to reach the last floor of the game.

Pandaemonium - 10F
  • Head all the way north and once you reach the final boss, heal up and quick-save.
  • Then once you feel prepared, interact with the Emperor to start the last battle.

  • This boss is such a tank. Has high ATK, extremely high DEF, and can heal himself 5000+ HP with a single physical attack.
  • If you enter this fight with all chests (mostly the chests from this area) collected + the Blood Sword, you'll basically have all the necessary ingredients to make this a cakewalk.
  • Switch out of dual-wielding for your 2 weaker supporting characters. Equip them with shields since they only need to buff the entire fight. If you followed this guide and Firion is your White Mage, equip him with a shield accompanied by a Blood Sword. It doesn't matter if he has a lot of attack power or not because the Blood Sword will deal percentage-based damage.
  • For your other attacker (Guy in my case with mastered Sword level), just equip him with Masamune and Excalibur.
  • Start the fight and buff both of them INDIVIDUALLY with Berserk and Haste. Using multi-target on any magic decreases its potency.
  • Once both are buffed, set the game to auto and WIN. Emperor should go down in 3-4 turns.

    (Boss Fight starts at 0:34)

  • Anyway, all of the luck and thanks for reading our guide!
  • Refer to the section below if you haven't unlocked the Weapon Tactics achievement yet.

War's End Defeated the emperor and restored peace to the world.
Field Research- Professional Completed 100% of the Bestiary entries.
Master of II Earned all achievements.
Weapon Tactics Achievement
Best done post-completion since the Blood Sword carries most battles leading up to the final boss. The % damage mechanic of that sword is barely affected (if at all) by sword mastery. Alternatively, if you want to max someone's weapon out to have an easier ascension to the final boss, scroll down to the alternative method.

Instructions:
  • Kill all but your physical attacker (in my case Guy).
  • Equip your attacker with the Blood Sword, so you heal on hit.
  • Visit Semmit Falls and get into a random encounter against any weak and non-annoying enemy: Soldier, Sasquash, Goblin, etc.
  • If you get into a battle with more than one enemy, kill all but one.
  • Now attack yourself until the enemy flees. Don't auto-attack as that auto-focuses the enemy. Instead, put something heavy on your ENTER key and leave it there.
  • Repeat until reaching sword level 16.

Weapon Tactics Leveled up one weapon type to skill level 16.

Alternative Pre-LastBoss Method:
  • Once you have airship access, make sure you have 2x Longswords.
  • Equip it on your highest sword attacker and travel to Salamand.
  • Just west of Salamand (in and around the trees) you can fight Captain and Big Horn enemies.
  • When fighting Captain squads, kill every non-soldier type enemy (such as the Werepanthers and Wizards) since they can inflict confusion and other status attacks.
  • The actual fastest way to level Swords is to encounter a 4x Big Horn group and have everyone else defend except for your highest Sword mastery character. With 2x Longswords, you'll be dealing insignificant damage to the Big Horns and can keep attacking them for many turns (they barely hurt you as well) until all 4 enemies die. 1 group of 4 can almost take your from 15-16 in 1 encounter. Keep in mind that if weapon exp does not carry over into a new level os if you're at 95%, get the level first before you start a long encounter to level your Sword.

Magic Tactics Leveled up one magic spell to skill level 16.
The easiest way to level up magic to 16 is to level Cure OUTSIDE of battle. Simply go to the 3rd floor of Mysidian Tower and step on a damaging tile. After each step, cast cure INDIVIDUALLY on every party member. Repeat this step and use as many Ethers as necessary. It took me 2 stacks of 99 Ethers to go from Cure Level 9-16. Simply Teleport out of the dungeon and restock nearby when necessary. Gil is not hard to come by in this game.

Thank you, this made playing the game a little less miserable. Great work.

found a mistake when you mention in the "Birth of the Wyvern" part that you now need to get those bestiary entries... it's too late at that point you need to do it BEFORE completing Mysidian Tower and getting Ultima (missed one myself and had to go back to an old save from before Leviathan

IN MYSDIAN TOWER where the ultimate tome is the white sphere give you stat boast if you grab them. there south east give strength. north east give spirt. i forgot what the west ones do. but pick them up before leaving the tower

Just completed this today working my way to to FFXVI. It was an interesting game, different game mechanic than most ff I've played. It's very hard to level Ultima past level 10 and most attack spells. Only the passive buff spells are easy to level to 16. The whole game was too easy because I overleveled at the beginning of the game. Max Stats on 3 main characters right off the start and maxed all weapons except unarmed. Give this game a 9/10.

I'm slowly working my way through the series in chronological order for the first time (I've played most of the games years ago; this was actually the one of the first 10 I hadn't played), and your guides are invaluable towards 100% them. Thank you so much for all the hard work you put into these.

Just a little tip, the note that says "Once you enter the Castle of Palamecia, you can't exit until completing the dungeon." you can just use Teleport Tome to exist the dungeon

These Final Fantasy guides are some of the best guides that I"ve ever used! Thank you so much. This guide really enhanced my enjoyment of this criminally underrated game
