Well, if we're going for the broader definition of modern the mother of them all was Catacombs: The Abyss. - Predates Escape From Castle Wolfenstein by over 2 years. I defined modern as true open world.
- I was going to list Call of Duty and Medal of Honor but omitted them because they're not actual 'open world' games.
'All' modern FPS games is certainly an exaggeration. It was highly influential, however. I think Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Quake, Unreal (solely due to its engine), Half-Life, Counter-Strike, Deus Ex, Halo: Combat Evolved, The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind (despite not being a shooter), Halo 2 and Call of Duty 4 were more influential. Far Cry 2 is up there, though, which is saying something for a game very many people haven't played.
