1. Getting Started
Movement
You'll find movement takes a bit getting use to, you can't simply start moving in another direction when moving forward at speed. The trick is to hold Left ALT to really slow down your momentum, that way you can change directions quicker.
Another trick is to hold Left SHIFT to speed up movement in the direction you want to move, then start holding/tapping ALT when getting close to the floating debris, ship debris or your base.
If you hit let's say your base at less then 20km/h, there's no damage. Anything higher and you get hurt. It's possible to lose Health to flying debris if it hits you at speed while you're in its path.

Backpack
Resource Focus: Plastic, Rubber, Oxygen

First thing you want to do is to craft the Backpack, because it increases what you hold by 4 (from 5 items to 9 items). To do this you'll need to collect at least 5 Plastic and 5 Rubber. Also collecting Oxygen Tanks will help out as Oxygen goes down quickly.
***Note: If you chose not to lose items on death then there will be no penalty if you do die and you'll respawn at the platform with all your inventory.***

Once collected at least 5 Plastic and 5 Rubber, open the craft menu (Tab key) and click on the far right tab, click on Backpack and click Craft.

The Backpack should automatically equip.
***Note: If the Backpack did not automatically equip: Press Tab then hold left mouse click on the Backpack and drag the Backpack into the box with the same picture (above item slot 5) to equip it.***

Your inventory space should have increased by 4 slots.

Pickaxe
Resource Focus: Scrap Metal, Rubber, Oxygen, Food

Next to aim for is the Pickaxe. You need this to repair your platform and it will be much easier to get Scrap Metal. Once you collected 7 Scrap Metal and 5 Rubber (with a free space), then Crafting menu (Tab) and you should see it straight away (if not, far left tab), click Pickaxe and Craft.

To use the Pickaxe, make sure it's in the first 5 inventory slots and just select it with the number it's in (1 to 5), then left click (and hold) on any ship part debris when close enough to see a percentage to start salvaging. The size of debris determines how much percent goes down but also how much Scrap Metal you get. Depending on the size of the ship part debris, you can also get Plastic and Wires.

Storage
Resource Focus: Scrap Metal, Plastic, Metal, Oxygen

Next you want to start storing items so you'll need a Chest. Even though you can now hold 9 item types, you'll find out that you can't hold every item type in the game. Chests also make it easier to craft later as you don't need to hold the resources.
You'll need to collect 15 Scrap Metal, 5 Plastic and 2 Metal to craft a Chest. Once collected (and you have 1 space free), open the craft menu (Tab key) and click on the second last tab from the right then click on Chest and Craft.

Place the Chest somewhere on your platform (can move it later) and you now have storage space of 10 (2 rows by 5 columns). Later on I like to have 3 Chests, one is for food/oxygen, another for Ores and the other is for the other resources and tools.

Repairing Base And Unlocking Recipes
Resource Focus: Electrical Parts, Wires, Metal, Oxygen

Now is an ideal time to repair the computer on the platform so you can start unlocking recipes. You need 5 Electrical Parts, 2 Metal and 4 Wires. Once you have the resources, make sure you're carrying them then select your Pickaxe and right mouse click to repair the computer on the platform.

You now can start unlocking recipes if you have enough resources.
2. Starting A Base
Resource Focus: Scrap Metal, Rubber, Plastic, Oxygen, Wires

To start building your base, you'll need to craft the Blueprint item (5 Plastic and 3 Wires) that's found on the first tab in the Craft menu.

Once crafted, select the Blueprint and by default it selects the Base (Floor) option. You can change the build pieces by holding down the right mouse button and moving the mouse to the type you want and releasing the mouse button to select it.

Left click to place if you have the resources (Green piece= can build, Red piece= don't have all the resources).
You can demolish existing pieces by left mouse clicking the Pickaxe but you'll only get some Scrap Metal back.

The build options are as follows (costs are per piece):
Base (Floor) - 10 Scrap Metal and 2 Metal
Wall - 15 Scrap Metal, 3 Plastic and 7 Rubber
Window - 20 Scrap Metal, 5 Plastic and 12 Rubber
Door - 30 Scrap Metal, 15 Bolts (unlock recipe) and 10 Rubber
Roof - 10 Scrap Metal and 3 Plastic

I like to build a base that's 4 blocks by 4 blocks to fit in everything but you may want it bigger or smaller.
***Note: There is a height limitation of 1 Wall high and the roof is fixed to this height***

You could just have floors so you have the room to fit the machines and chests, but the bonus of having a completely enclosed base (floors, walls, door/s and roof) is that the Oxygen Stat no longer drops and slowly increases, but also you can walk around inside rather then float (until you open a door).

The setup I have later is a Generator connected to Batteries, then Batteries connected to machines. I replace the Generator with Solar Panel once I unlock the recipe, to make it easier to manage power.
One Generator can connect up to 3 machines (best connected to Batteries to store excess/unused power)
One Battery can connect up to 3 machines (2 if one of the connections is the Generator/Solar Panel)
*All machines require power to run and some machines run constantly that'll drain the batteries*

One Plastic in the Generator charges a Battery to about 30%.
Once you've built your base or plan to finish it later, it's now time to do some research to unlock recipes and finally build some machines.
3. Recipe Research
Resource Focus: Scrap Metal, Wires, Food

To research, you look at your computer on the platform and press E to use.
The default screen is the Ship Systems (we'll come back to this later) but we want the Items Database (middle tab at the top) to start researching.

Here are the costs and the order you unlock in each category:

Research Costs

Components recipes Total: 90 Scrap Metal
Electrical Parts - 15 Scrap Metal

3D Printer - 22 Bolts
Decor Table - 7 Bolts
Lamp - 5 Bolts
3b. Machine (Factory) Types and Functions

Energy Generator - (5 Bolts, 2 Electrical Parts and 2 Metal) Most important machine as it powers all the other machines in the beginning. Uses Plastic as fuel and best connected to Batteries to store the excess/unused power.

Solar Panel - (1 Branium, 2 Processor and 3 Metal) Slowly generates power, effectively replacing the Generator.
Can ONLY be connected to a Battery. Can be placed on the roof.

Energy Battery - (10 Bolts, 4 Electrical Parts and 1 Aluminum) Used to store power from a Generator and can be connected to other machines to power them when the Generator is not producing power.

Repair Table - (1 Iron, 3 Metal and 3 Rubber) Repairs damaged tools using slightly less resources then it takes to rebuild them.

Decor Table - (2 Bolts, 4 Metal and 6 Scrap Metal) Used to create the following decor items:
 • Corner Table (1 Metal and 1 Plastic)
 • Plant Vase (1 Plastic and 1 Rubber)
 • Large Plant Vase (2 Plastic and 2 Rubber)
 • Square Table (1 Metal and 1 Plastic)
 • Stool (2 Scrap Metal and 1 Plastic)
 • Stool With Back (2 Scrap Metal and 2 Plastic)
 • Toilet (2 Scrap Metal and 1 Rubber)
 • Head (1 Rubber and 2 Scrap Metal)

Lamp - (4 Bolts and 1 Metal Part) Provides light but doesn't need to be connected and doesn't drain power. Can be placed on the roof outside if you wish.

Uses power only when used

Recycler - (10 Scrap Metal, 5 Rubber and 3 Wire) Converts Plastic and Scrap Metal into Plastic Raw Materials and Metal Raw Materials, which are used to make Plastic Parts and Metal Parts in the 3D Printer.
Also used to process Ores to use as crafting ingredients.
Can process a stack of either Plastic, Metal or Ores, use the slider to pick the amount.

3D Printer - (5 Bolts, 1 Branium and 2 Metal) Convert Plastic Raw Materials and Metal Raw Materials into Plastic Parts and Metal Parts. Processes only 1 at a time, need to collect before can process again.

Oxygen Generator - (4 Electrical Parts, 5 Rubber and 1 Oxygen Tank) Produces and stores Oxygen in the event you have no oxygen tanks and need to refill your Oxygen stat.

Orangery - (15 Scrap Metal, 2 Plastic Parts and 1 Processor) Converts the food you find into Organic Food that recovers 45% Hunger each.
1 type of food (any) gives about 3.2 Organic Food regardless of the original Hunger recovery and is collected 1 at a time.
Can stack almost 7 food to process, but excess is lost so best to stack 6 food.

Trash Trap - (1 Ebosite, 5 Bolts and 2 Metal Parts) Collects up to 5 random items, then you need to collect them before it can start spinning and collecting again.
Can be placed on the roof and collected while inside if you look at it. Uses power until it has collected 5 items.
More efficient to have Solar Panels then waste Plastic/Power using Generators.

Always using power

Destroyed Ships Radar - (5 Bolts, 4 Metal Parts and 2 Processors) Helps you detect destroyed ships to make it easier to find the black boxes as part of the Ship Mission tab.
Can toggle ON and OFF.

NOT IN USE

Transmitter - (3 Metal Parts, 2 Processors and 2 Plastic Parts) Obtained when all 7 black boxes have been recovered and decrypted.
4. Base Building
This is the build order I recommend given starting crafting abilities and slowly working towards unlocking more:

Energy Generator
(5 Bolts, 2 Electrical Parts and 2 Metal)
The only way to power your machines from the start using Plastic to generate power. Need to start somewhere.

Recycler
(10 Scrap Metal, 5 Rubber and 3 Wire)
Will need this later for Raw Plastic/Metal Materials and Ores but it's good to have it already built.

Oxygen Generator (Optional)
(4 Electrical Parts, 5 Rubber and 1 Oxygen Tank)
Optional if you are finding a lack of Oxygen Bottles and eventually suffocate to death, then this can help you out with an instant boost to Oxygen levels if machine has been powered.
***Note: It's recommended to complete your base because your Oxygen slowly fills while you work inside.***

Tool - Boer
(3 Electrical Parts, 3 Plastic and 3 Metal)
The only way to get the Ores is by harvesting asteroids and you need this tool to do it. The asteroids have a colour to them indicating the type of Ore it gives.

Purple Asteroid = Ebosite
Aqua Asteroid = Branium
White Asteroid = Aluminum
Orange Asteroid = Iron
Red Asteroid = Armirium
You only get the Ore once you have reached 0% on the asteroid.

To build the following base improvements, you'll need:
 • 1x Ebosite - Trash Trap (if want one)
 • 3x Branium - 3D Printer and 2x Solar Panels (but you may want more Solar Panels)
 • 13x Aluminum - 2x Battery and 9 Processors (+2 Processors for Ship Engine later on)
 • 1x Iron - Repair Table (if want one)
 • 1x Armirium - Ship Engine (later on)

Battery
(10 Bolts, 4 Electrical Parts and 1 Aluminum)
You can finally store the unused power for later use when connected to a Generator and don't need to fill the Generator with Plastic then rush to use the power before it finishes.
Recommend a minimum of 2 Batteries if don't want any of the optional machines, 3 if want to build everything.
***Note: You can connect one Battery to another Battery to create a connected power system (very useful when you build a Solar Panel to replace the Generator).***

3D Printer
(5 Bolts, 1 Branium and 2 Metal)
Another important machine that we'll need to make Plastic/Metal Parts to make more advanced parts.

Repair Table (Optional)
(1 Iron, 3 Metal and 3 Rubber)
Optional if you want to invest some resources now to save some in the future by repairing rather then rebuilding tools.

Solar Panel
(1 Branium, 2 Processor and 3 Metal)
Once you have built these to replace your generators, you won't need to monitor your power levels again and just focus on crafting and exploring.

Orangery
(15 Scrap Metal, 2 Plastic Parts and 1 Processor)
Building one of these will solve your food problems. For every one type of (any) food converts into 3 food that replenishes 45% EACH regardless of the original food value.

Trash Trap (Optional)
(1 Ebosite, 5 Bolts and 2 Metal Parts)
Having one (or more) of these helps to salvage loot without much interaction other then collecting.
Only collects 5 random items so might be better to have a few if you wish.

Destroyed Ships Radar
(5 Bolts, 4 Metal Parts and 2 Processors)
This will make it easier to spot a destroyed ship if there's too much debris in the way to see it ahead.
5. Mission Tab and Black Boxes
Ship Engine
Resource Focus: Scrap Metal, Plastic, Electrical Parts, Metal

If you feel satisfied that your base is up and running with enough stockpiled resources, it's time to start really exploring.
In order for your base to start actually moving, you'll need to build the Ship Engine. This is done by looking at the computer (where you unlocked recipes) and on the default screen, you'll see Ship Engine in the bottom half with the resources you'll need (1 Armirium, 2 Processors and 5 Metal).

Once it's been built, you'll have the option to turn the Ship Engine ON and OFF provided you've connected the computer to a Battery or Generator for power.

Access Card
To start unlocking Black Boxes at destroyed ships, you first need to find Access Card Lvl 1 to unlock the Mission tab of the computer.
You may have seen a large ship in parts in the far distance (clockwise direction of the planet) which is where you want to go. Sometimes you may need to venture far and without the base nearby to find it, which I recommend bringing Oxygen and some Food as it's much quicker to fly without the base (base ship max speed is 10 where you can fly in the hundreds).
It can be dangerous, I recommend to fly above the level of debris that flies around as hitting one at speed more likely results in instant death. Be careful not to fly too high, low or wide otherwise you start suffering Radiation which reduces your Health.

Once you get to the destroyed ship, the Access Card is usually inside (with random debris) and it looks like small debris which you might mistake for Food. Sometimes it can be floating outside near the wreckage.

Once you collected the card, head back to your base (using the same technique like flying above) and try to avoid a direct line to the base by following the curve to prevent Radiation damage.
Go to the computer, click on the Mission tab and click Unlock.

Your screen now displays all the types of Black Boxes to discover.

Travelling By Ship
Resource Focus: Plastic, Oxygen, Food

If you're ready to leave, power up the Ship Engine to start moving your base (it goes in a clockwise direction around the planet).

You can toggle the Destroyed Ships Radar ON and OFF to conserve power but typical you can spot them in the distance as they look different to the pieces you can salvage for Scrap Metal.
Remember to supply power to the Ship Engine otherwise when the power is depleted, the base slows down and moves at the default rate of 0.1.
Once close enough to a destroyed ship, turn the Ship Engine OFF (and Destroyed Ships Radar to OFF if ON) and make your way to the destroyed ship.

Black Boxes
The Black Box should be outside near the wreckage and it looks like an all Silver Crate which in this case is the Black Box.

To confirm you have it, you'll need to open the Mission tab on the computer back at base.
To decrypt the Black Box, you'll need power to the computer and just wait for some time to pass. Once decrypted, you can read the contents.

There are a total of 7 Black Boxes scattered around, rest I leave to you.
Good luck adventurer.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How do you recover health?
It slowly regenerates over time back to 100%.

How do you use the Backpack?
The Backpack should automatically equip.
***Note: If the Backpack did not automatically equip: Press Tab then hold left mouse click on the Backpack and drag the Backpack into the box with the same picture (above item slot 5) to equip it.***

Your inventory space should have increased by 4.

How do I repair the base/computer?
First you need to create a Pickaxe (7 Scrap Metal and 5 Rubber), select the Pickaxe and along with the resources needed, right mouse click to repair.

How do I repair my tools?
You need to have a Repair Table built (1 Iron, 3 Metal and 3 Rubber) and carry the required resources to repair (it mentions what you need to repair).

Why did my tool/s disappear / What happens to a tool at 0% durability?
Once a tool reaches 0% durability, you lose the tool and need to build another one.

How do I unlock recipes?
Once you've repaired the base computer, press E on the computer to open up a window and click on the Items Database tab to see the list.

How do I make my base/platform bigger?
You'll need to craft the Blueprint item (5 Plastic and 3 Wires) that's found on the first tab in the Craft menu.
Once crafted, select the Blueprint and by default it selects the Base (Floor) option. You can change the build modes by holding down the right mouse button and moving the mouse to the type you want and releasing the mouse button to select it.

Left click to place if you have the resources (Green piece= can build, Red piece= don't have all the resources).
You can demolish existing pieces by left mouse clicking with the Pickaxe but you'll only get some Scrap Metal back.

How to get Metal Parts/Plastic Parts?
These are only obtained through crafting and can't be picked up floating around.
You'll need a Recycler (10 Scrap Metal, 5 Rubber and 3 Wire) to get Metal/Plastic Raw Materials, then you'll need a 3D Printer to convert them into Metal/Plastic Parts.
Both of these machine recipes need to be unlocked first before building.

How to get Ores?
First you need to craft the tool Boer (3 Electrical Parts, 3 Plastic and 3 Metal) to begin harvesting asteroids. Each asteroid has a colour that determines the type of Ore you'll get.

Purple Asteroid = Ebosite
Aqua Asteroid = Branium
White Asteroid = Aluminum
Orange Asteroid = Iron
Red Asteroid = Armirium
You only get the Ore once you have reached 0% on the asteroid.

Next you need to process the Ore in a Recycler after which you can use the processed ore for crafting.

How many things can be connected to the Battery?
A maximum of 3 machines (with a Generator/Solar Panel taking up a spot if connected).
***Note: You can connect one Battery to another Battery to create a connected power system (very useful when you build a Solar Panel to replace the Generator).***

How do you connect machines to a Battery/Generator?
First you'll need to craft the Wiring tool (10 Scrap Metal, 6 Wires and 3 Rubber) once you've unlocked the recipe.
Then select the tool, look at the machine and hold left mouse button and drag the green line to the machine you want to connect to.

How do you connect the Solar Panel?
Solar Panels can ONLY be connected to a Battery. I find it easier to just replace the Generator.

Where do I find the Access Card?
You may have seen a large ship in parts in the far distance (clockwise direction) which is where you want to go.
Once you get to the destroyed ship, the Access Card is usually inside (with random debris) and it looks like small debris which you might mistake for Food. Sometimes it can be floating outside near the wreckage.

This is the common destroyed ship containing the Access Card.
Hi I sent in game feedback regarding more in depth Custom Key binds..
The game looks great and being an older, experienced and survive and craft fan of Grounded, Subnautica and Axalot genre of games..

I Have over 800 hours game time, in each, on average it's frustrating because

I can't play or give some fan based feedback on it due to a disability which limits me to using the Cursor Keys.

I Even dug around in the user files and found the file holding the data for the customisation keys that I had and could set but they had Hex 64 ?? code things so I was defeated.

Thank you for this very good guide. It will help me big time with this really good game.

Thank you for the feedback and glad it helps.
First starting you have no choice but collect debris flying around, once you get the Pickaxe then Scrap Metal gets easier to collect by harvesting the ship debris. Wires and Plastic are also collected this way but personally prefer collecting the floating Plastic. You still need to hand collect everything else and I try to aim for particular items while avoid crafting an item that I can collect if possible.
The Trash Trap can make it easier to collect when more established but feels like you need a few and a lot of Plastic to run just to collect all types of resources and doesn't feel like it's worth it right now.
Maybe once there's a renewable energy source then a Trash Trap would be helpful.
