Japanese Submarine I-400

Here is the I-400-class Submarine aircraft carrier of the Imperial Japanese Navy during WW2.


The I-400-class (also known as the Sen Toku-class) were a class of submarines that could carry 3 Aichi M6A aircraft to conduct aerial attacks over US cities and the Panama Canal. A fleet of 18 boats was planned, but this was soon scaled down to 5. Only 3 were completed, I-400, I-401, and I-402. I-400 and I-401 were planned to be used in an operation to attack the Panama Canal, but this operation was canceled due to attacks from allied carriers on the Japanese Home Islands. The 2 were instead used in Operation Arashi to attack Ulithi, but by the time they were planned to attack, and with I-402 sailing down to the Dutch East Indies, Emperor Hirohito announced Japan's surrender, and none of the I-400s would ever see combat service. The 3 subs were inspected by the US Navy after the war, but were sunk to avoid being inspected by the Soviets. The I-400-class were the largest submarines built during WW2, and remain the largest non-nuclear submarines ever built.
