Also, the one interface information that I couldn’t clarify from the in-game tutorials was the ‘grey boxes’ at the units screen, and that is clarified by steam user <<PTHD_Felix>> at the HELP question by <<taitinon>>, Gabe bless them both! :

the grey boxes indicate the "tier" of a unit. This can also be seen in the Units or Recruitment menus. Basically a unit with 2 boxes is more "advanced" than a unit with 1 box, but it also costs more to recruit.
There are no "tier 4" units. However, not every tier 1 unit can be upgraded twice. For example: there are only two tiers of Soviet Anti-Aircraft guns, so there is only one upgrade available. This varies from unit to unit. >>
